Friday's Men's Soccer Roundup

College of Charleston 2, Stanford 1 (OT)

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team downed Stanford, 2-1 in overtime, in front of 1,611 fans in its opening match of the 12th annual NIKE/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point on Friday evening.

Ralphie Lundy buried a pair of penalty kicks to give CofC the win while the Cougar defense stood up Stanford’s high-octane attack.

Less than four minutes into the overtime period, Lundy sent a free kick into the box, where Shawn Ferguson was tackled from behind to warrant the second penalty kick of the game. For the second time, Lundy stepped to the ball but this time went to his right side and netted it for the game-winner.

Lundy’s first penalty kick came in the 15th minute after he had sprung Sean de Silva alone on-goal with a through-ball. Cardinal keeper Drew Hutchins had no choice but to tackle de Silva in the box, granting the Cougars the penalty kick. Lundy crushed the ball into the upper-left corner, where Hutchins had no play at it.

The Cougars were the more disciplined team for the entirety of the match and Hutchins’ foul was one of the seven the Cardinal committed before CofC committed one. Stanford committed 13 fouls compared to the Cougars’ seven after full time.

After the CofC goal, Stanford’s offense came to life and pushed CofC into its defensive third for much of the remaining first period. In the 28th minute, the Cardinal broke through when Austin Meyer put a low cross through the box from the left side. Adam Jahn was on the receiving end and scored inside the right-hand post on his first touch.

Stanford looked to take a lead in the late moments of the first half when a Bobby Edwards shot got by Cougar keeper Kees Heemskerk, but CofC defender Tam McGowan retreated and cleared the ball to safety just before it crossed the goal line.

The teams then played an extremely physical but scoreless second half, which was contained mostly in the central third with the teams exchanging runs at each other.

In the 66th minute, Eric Fornell made a long run onto a ball hit into the box and nudged it past a charging Hutchins, but a Stanford defender got to the ball in the same fashion McGowan had for CofC.

The Cougars end the NIKE/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic against Dayton on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Wofford 2, Gardner-Webb 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s soccer team held off Gardner-Webb University for a 2-1 victory Friday Night at Snyder Field. Alex Hutchins led the Terriers to the win, scoring two first-half goals.

The Terriers improved to 1-1-0 on the year, while the Runnin’ Bulldogs dropped to 0-3-0.

Gardner-Webb opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Bryce Wells’ shot was blocked and Chris Davis was able to knock the rebound past Terrier keeper Andrew Drennan. Wofford responded in the 30th minute when Ryan Hurst earned a penalty after receiving a beautifully played pass by Turner Almond. Senior Captain Alex Hutchins buried the shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Wofford took the lead 12 minutes later on another Hutchins goal assisted, by Billy Padula and Forrest Lasso. Padula used a long throw-in to find Lasso, who headed the ball to Hutchins, who found the back of the net past Runnin’ Bulldog goalie Scott Krotee.

At the break, the Terriers held the edge in shots (13-4) and corners (4-3) on their way to 2-1 halftime lead.

The second half saw both teams create good scoring chances, but neither side was able to add to its halftime score. Each team took six second-half shots, with Gardner-Webb taking one more corner kick (3-2).

Play throughout the match was very physical and got chippier as the contest progressed. By the end, both teams had received two yellow cards but nothing worse.

Drennan earned the win for the Terriers to improve to 1-1-0 for the season. He allowed one goal and recorded five saves on 10 shots faced. Krotee took the loss for the Runnin’ Bulldogs and fell to 0-3-0 on the year. Krotee allowed both Terrier goals and made nine saves on 19 shots.

Both teams will return to the field Sunday for the second leg of the SoCon/Big South Soccer Challenge. Gardner-Webb will face off against Georgia Southern at 1 p.m., and the Terriers will face the Winthrop Eagles at 3:30 pm. Both games will be played at Snyder Field.

Georgia Southern 3, Winthrop 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern earned its first win of the year with a 3-2 victory over Winthrop on Friday in the opening match of the 2012 SoCon/Big South Soccer Challenge. Winthrop produced a pair of equalizers, but it was Reed Norton’s second goal of the year in the 75th minute that sealed the win for GSU.

Georgia Southern went up 1-0 in the 21st minute on a penalty kick from senior Joe Hughes. The Eagles earned a corner kick and delivered the ball into the box, where Winthrop handled the ball for the Eagles’ first penalty kick of the year. Hughes buried the spot kick for his first goal of the season.

Nine minutes into the second half, Winthrop posted its first equalizer of the afternoon from Adam Brundle.

In the 66th minute, Southern went back on top 2-1 off the boot of Witt Carlisle. Solid built-up play by Nick Lane and Norton matriculated the ball forward, giving Norton the chance to cross the ball into the area. A well-timed run by Carlisle put the junior in position to push the ball home for a GSU goal.

Winthrop equalized again in the 72nd minute as Sean Coomer got on the scoresheet off an assist from Mason Lavalett on a well-timed run.

Southern’s game-winning goal came nearly four minutes later as Norton posted his second collegiate goal. Drew Ruggles took a long throw-in that was flicked on by Seth Prieto. The Winthrop goalkeeper attempted to play the ball and only got the slightest of touches on it. The ball went toward the far post, where Norton was on-hand to push the ball across the line and cement the GSU win.

Between the pipes, Jack Falle got the win by making nine saves off 15 total attempts by Winthrop.

The Eagles close out the 2012 SoCon/Big South Soccer Challenge on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Gardner-Webb. The contest will be played at Wofford’s Snyder Field.

Dayton 3, No. 17 Furman 2

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – Dayton’s Greg Enstone slid a shot under Furman goalkeeper Doug Ryan with just 3:42 left in regulation to lift the Flyers to a 3-2 victory over the 17th-ranked Paladins in the opening match of the Nike/Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic on Friday evening at the College of Charleston’s Patriots Point Athletics Complex.

The 87th-minute tally, Enstone’s second goal of the match, improved Dayton to 3-0-0 on the season, while Furman suffered its first defeat of 2012 to dip to 2-1-0.

Daniel Berko delivered a cross on the deciding goal that bounced through the box to Enstone, who had put the Flyers in front just 9:44 into the match from the penalty spot after the Paladins’ Clint Ritter was whistled for a foul in the box.

Coleton Henning equalized for the Paladins in the 15th minute as Adrian McInnis and Danny Hojaij set up the Furman senior and reigning SoCon Co-Player of the Year to fire to the lower left-hand corner for his first goal of the season.

Dayton regained the lead at 2-1 in the 36th minute when Andres Acevedo touched the ball around a charging Paladin keeper and finished into an empty net at 35:39. Furman knotted the match at 2-2 at the 71:29 mark as Chris Duggan picked out Martin Ontiveros at the top of the box and the junior finished his chance for his team-leading second tally of 2012.

Ryan stopped four shots in the loss for the Paladins, while Dayton’s Chris Froschauer turned away six shots to earn the victory.

Furman outshot the Flyers 17-9, including 8-7 in shots on goal.

The Paladins return to action on Sunday when they conclude play in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic with a noon kickoff against Stanford.

Wright State 3, Davidson 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite Andrew DiLallo’s second career strike, the Davidson men’s soccer team fell to Wright State, 3-1, on day one of the Wolstein Classic on Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The setback dropped the Wildcats to 0-1-1 on the young campaign, while the Raiders moved to 1-2-0.

DiLallo’s 14th-minute header came off a Jake Keator corner to give Davidson the early 1-0 advantage.

Along with his first assist of the season, Keator had some scoring opportunities of his own, putting a game-high three shots on frame.

Wright State wasted little time erasing the early deficit as the Raiders netted all three of their goals during a 7-minute, 50-second stretch midway through the opening period.

After setting up Brett Elder at the 16:09 mark to tie the score, 1-1, Derek Zuniga scored the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later.

Zuniga also provided an assist Albert Nilsson’s 24th-minute goal.

Late in the first half, Alex Feliciano just missed on a shot that was touched wide by Wright State keeper Jacob Bye, who finished with eight saves.

In the 86th minute, Davidson had another chance to make it a one-goal contest, but Bye turned away Chris Pettiglio’s one-on-one left-footed attempt.

In addition to a 16-10 advantage in shots, the Wildcats held an 8-6 edge in corners.

Davidson will conclude its appearance in the Wolstein Classic with a 2:30 p.m. contest against the host Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday.
