Wofford 1, Presbyterian 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's soccer team defeated Presbyterian by a score of 1-0 Thursday night at Snyder Field. Emily Bougas scored the game-winning goal in the 47th minute on just her second shot of the game.
Wofford improved to 2-1-0 on the season, while Presbyterian fell to 0-4-0.
Wofford dominated play throughout the first half, but was unable to create any good scoring chances. The Terriers recorded six shots in the half but failed to test Blue Hose goalkeeper Jordan Broadway, who recorded two easy saves.
The Terriers resumed their control of the match in the second half. Bougas was able to strike quickly, taking just over a minute to give the Terriers a one-goal lead. She worked her way into the open field and beat Broadway with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net. The goal was her first of the season.
Presbyterian worked hard to equalize in the second half, but the Terrier defense was too strong on their way to recording a shutout. Erika Christensen earned the victory to improve to 2-1 on the season. She also recorded her seventh career shutout.
Broadway made four saves on 11 shots.
Wofford travels to Conway, S.C., to face the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina at 2 p.m. Sunday at CCU Soccer Field.
Coastal Carolina 3, Elon 0
ELON, N.C. - A pair of late first-half goals by Coastal Carolina proved to be too much to overcome for the Elon women's soccer team on Thursday night as the Phoenix dropped a 3-0 decision to the Chanticleers in nonconference action at Rudd Field.
Elon (1-2-1) saw Coastal Carolina (2-2) net two goals late in the first period in the 33rd and 40th minutes to fall behind just prior to intermission.
After her initial shot was blocked by Phoenix goalie Kate Murphy, the Chanticleers' Anna Lowe struck the deflection into the back of the goal to make it a 1-0 game. Seven minutes later, CCU's Shelby Evans hit Ashley Day in the box with a lofted pass for the score to put Elon behind, 2-0.
The Chanticleers held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the opening stanza, with the Phoenix holding a 2-0 edge in corners.
Sophomore Raychel Diver nearly cut Coastal Carolina's lead in half just 35 seconds in to the second period, but her shot sailed just left of the goal.
The Chanticleers took a 3-0 lead in the 74th minute when Fia Johnson scored from 25 yards out.
Elon ended the match with a 3-1 advantage in corners, while Murphy played all 90 minutes and finished with six saves.
Elon returns to action on Sunday when it heads to Raleigh, N.C., to face NC State at 3 p.m.
