SoCon Honors UNCG's White as POTW

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG freshman forward Chesney White has been named the Southern Conference's women's soccer player of the week for all matches Aug. 20-26.

White scored two goals as the Spartans went 2-0 last week, knocking off No. 7 Wake Forest on Friday and topping UNC Asheville 7-0 on Sunday.

The Franklin, Tenn., native nodded in the lone goal of the contest Friday as UNCG picked up the 1-0 win over the Demon Deacons on their home turf. The victory was the Spartans' second over a top-10 Wake Forest squad in the last three seasons, both of them in Winston-Salem, N.C., and marked the highest-ranked opponent UNCG has ever beaten.

White followed up her performance Friday with a goal in the romp over the Bulldogs in Greensboro, N.C., two days later.

She is the second Spartan freshman to earn SoCon player of the week honors this season, as teammate Jamie Simmons took the inaugural award last week.

UNCG (2-1) is back in action this weekend at the UK Tropical Smoothie Invitational in Lexington, Ky. The Spartans will take on tournament host Kentucky on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Louisville on Sunday at noon.

Also nominated: Amy Werdine (Appalachian State), McCallie Jones (College of Charleston), Mariana Garcia (The Citadel), Ranae Cairns (Davidson), Kate Murphy (Elon), Stephanie DeVita (Furman), Nora El-Shami (Georgia Southern), McKenzie Thomas (Samford), Becca Smith (Chattanooga) and Christine Kaznowski (Western Carolina).
