Furman 3, Gardner-Webb 0
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The 20th-ranked Furman men's soccer team tallied three-second half goals to down Gardner-Webb 3-0 in nonconference action at Greene-Harbison Field on Monday night.
The victory improved the Paladins to 2-0-0 on the season while Gardner-Webb slipped to 0-2-0.
After a scoreless first half in which Furman managed a 5-2 edge in shot attempts, Martin Ontiveros opened the scoring at the 46:59 mark with his first goal of the season. Walker Zimmerman picked out Adrian McInnis in the middle of the field and the redshirt freshman chipped a pass ahead to Ontiveros, who split two defenders to touch a shot past Gardner-Webb goalkeeper Scott Krotee.
The Paladins put the match away with two goals in the span of 61 seconds late in the second half. Danny Hojaij passed to Kevin Pahl from wide on the left side, and Pahl drilled a knuckling shot from 19 yards out past Krotee and into the upper right-hand corner at 82:47. Moments later, Michael Gandier centered a pass to Clint Ritter, who rattled a shot off of his defender and past the keeper at the 83:48 mark for the final 3-0 margin.
Furman dominated the possession for most of the match and held the Bulldogs without a shot on goal until the final minutes of the match. The Paladins finished with an 18-4 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in shots on goal.
Senior Doug Ryan earned the victory on goal with one save, while Krotee suffered the loss despite recording eight saves for the Bulldogs.
Furman returns to action this weekend when it takes part in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at the College of Charleston. The Paladins face Dayton at 5 p.m. on Friday at Patriots Point before battling Stanford on Sunday.
Davidson 0, Clemson 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson men's soccer team opened its 2012 campaign with a double overtime scoreless draw against visiting Clemson in front of 1,239 fans at Alumni Stadium on Monday evening.
The Wildcats and Tigers were fairly even across the board, with Clemson holding a slight edge in shots (17-14) and corners (7-5). Brian McGue and Chris Pettiglio each had a team-high four shots.
Davidson had four of its shots in the first overtime but was not able to kick one through.
Matt Pacifici, making his Wildcat debut between the pipes, closed with five saves, while Clemson's Cody Mizell finished with four.
Davidson will take part in the Wolstein Classic this weekend, hosted by Ohio State. It will play Wright State on Friday at 5 p.m. before closing with the host Buckeyes on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
