GREENVILLE, S.C. - Furman defender Walker Zimmerman has been named to College Soccer News' Preseason All-American First Team, it was announced on Monday.
Zimmerman, a member of the United States U-20 National Team, scored five goals and added two assists while playing all 22 matches as a center back during his freshman campaign for the Paladins in 2011.
The Lawrenceville, Ga., product was named third-team NSCAA All-American and SoCon Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the first-team All-SoCon squad while helping guide Furman to a 14-4-4 overall record and NCAA tournament at-large bid last year.
The 6-foot-3 defender started in all three matches for the U.S. U-20 squad this summer at the prestigious MILK Cup in Northern Ireland. Earlier this month, along with teammate Coleton Henning, Zimmerman was named as one of 42 NCAA Division I players on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer and is presented annually in January during a banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo.
Furman, ranked No. 23 nationally by College Soccer News and No. 24 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason Top 25, opens its regular season on Friday night when it visits Clinton, S.C., to face the Presbyterian Blue Hose.
