Greenville, S.C. -- Furman University's Laura Wearn will be part of the field for the 112th United States Women's Amateur Championship on August 6-12, at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio, the rising senior was informed this week.
Wearn, a native of Charlotte, N.C., and the 2010 North Carolina Amateur champion, fired a 74 in her 18-hole qualifier at Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga., on July 9. Her two-over-par round was good for a share of sixth place, but relegated her to alternate status after losing a five-way playoff.
Earlier this week, Wearn received word that a spot had opened up allowing her to compete in this year's championship.
"It's really exciting to be playing in the tournament," said Wearn. "This is the first U.S. Women's Amateur that I have qualified for and I am hoping to play well."
Wearn, an All-Southern Conference selection, earned an individual bid to the NCAA East Regional this past season and recorded a 20th place finish last week in the prestigious North-South Amateur in Pinehurst, N.C.
