SPARTANBURG, S.C. – College of Charleston’s Mackenzie Maples has been named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Week, while Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis has been tabbed the Pitcher of the Week for all games played April 30 through May 6.
Maples hit .529 in the final week of the regular season, going 9-for-17 at the plate in the Cougars’ 3-2 week. The freshman drove in a team-high six RBI and her two doubles and a triple helped her record a .765 slugging percentage.
The catcher was perfect behind the plate with 23 putouts and one assist and a 1.000 fielding percentage.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week were Elon’s Tomeka Watson, Georgia Southern’s Marie Fogle, UNCG’s Katelyn Bedwell, Chattanooga’s Vivian Morimoto and Western Carolina’s Erin Foster.
Purvis went 2-0 in the final week of the regular season and did not allow a run in 14 innings of work. The sophomore struck out nine batters in the Eagles’ series opener against Furman and seven more in the finale. She held Furman to a .130 batting average, allowing six hits.
The Warner Robins, Ga., native recorded 221 strikeouts during her 2012 campaign, which set a new school record and ranks in the top 10 in league history.
Also nominated for pitcher of the week were College of Charleston’s Hope Klicker, Chattanooga’s Taylor Deason and Western Carolina’s Jordan Garrett.
