Gantt, Martin, Miller Named All-Americans

TWO SAMFORD PLAYERS NAMED TO LOUISVILLE SLUGGER ALL-AMERICA TEAMS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-Samford seniors Brandon Miller and Josh Martin were both named to the Louisville Slugger All-America teams, released by Collegiate Baseball on Thursday.

Miller was named to the second team as an outfielder, while Martin was named to the third team as a starting pitcher.

Miller, who is Samford's career leader in home runs with 38 in two seasons, leads the nation this season with 22 homers. He also leads the Southern Conference in RBI with a Samford-record 63, and in total bases with 151. Miller ranks second in the SoCon in slugging percentage at .645.

Martin is currently tied for the national lead in wins with a 12-1 record. He is the Samford career leader in wins with 24. Martin, who was named the Most Outstanding Player for last week's SoCon Tournament, pitched in both the team's first-round win over Western Carolina, and in their championship game victory over Georgia Southern.

Miller and Martin were both named first-team All-Southern Conference by the league's coaches at the conclusion of the regular season.

Miller and Martin join outfielder Marty Gantt of College of Charleston, who was named to the third team, as the three Southern Conference representatives on the teams. Pitcher Nick Petree of Missouri State was named the National Player of the Year.

The Bulldogs will open play in their first-ever NCAA Regional this weekend in Tallahassee, Fla. Samford will open the regional by taking on Mississippi State Friday at 11 a.m. (CT).

 

Marty Gantt Tabbed Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American

TUCSON, Ariz. - College of Charleston senior Marty Gantt was tabbed as a Louisville Slugger Third Team All-American, Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced Thursday afternoon.

Gantt joins an elite list of Cougar player who have earned All-American honors from Collegiate Baseball. Since 2002, College of Charleston has had a player on one of the three All-American teams in all but two seasons, good for 14 All-America designations in all.

A native of North Augusta, S.C., Gantt won the Southern Conference Player of the Year award from the coaches and media while earning a spot on the All-Conference first team. Gantt is currently third in the Southern Conference with a batting average of .375. His league-best 64 runs rank 12th in the nation, while Gantt is also one of the league leaders in walks (43) and on-base percentage (.485), while ranking second in doubles (19) and third in stolen bases (25) and slugging percentage (.612).

Gantt was also selected as a semifinalist for the prestigious Dick Howser Award, given to the top amateur player in the country.

The senior was one of three SoCon players on the three team award list, including Samford's Brandon Miller (2nd team) and Josh Martin (3rd team). Missouri State's Nick Petree was named the Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Year.
