Elon 4, Appalachian State 0
BOONE, N.C. - Behind three home runs, the seventh-seed Elon Phoenix blanked the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 4-0 and eliminated them from the Southern Conference Softball Championship at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. The Phoenix will play the College of Charleston this evening at 5:00 p.m. in the consolation round.
Elon got on the board first when senior Danielle Lafferty hit a two-run homer out to center, allowing the Phoenix to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, sophomore Carleigh Nester hit a home run to give Elon a 3-0 lead.
Junior Tomeka Watson gave Elon a 4-0 lead when she blasted a homer over the fence in left field.
Lafferty led the Phoenix with two hits and two RBI. O'Shea, Watson and Nester all recorded hits for Elon. Senior Megan Rembielak and freshman Riley Carter recorded the only hits for the Mountaineers.
Senior Erin O'Shea (16-9) earns the win in the circle following her two-hit shutout. She struck out four batters. Senior Caitlin Wainwright (6-10) takes the loss. She gave up two hits and three runs with one strike out.
Elon improves to 24-26 on the season while the Mountaineers end their season campaign at 22-25.
College of Charleston 6, UNCG 3
BOONE, N.C. - Behind 10 hits from third-seed College of Charleston, the Cougars eliminated UNCG Friday morning at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium. With the win, the Cougars advance to tonight's game in the consolation round.
Freshman Mackenzie Maples broke the Southern Conference Championship home run record as she blasted a two-run homer out to center, giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Her home run was the 21st of the tournament. The record was originally set in 2008 at Patriots Point in Charleston, S.C. when there was a total of 20 home runs.
UNCG answered with a two-run homer by freshman Dominique Madruga in the top of the second tying the game at two apiece. The score did not remain tied long, when College of Charleston plated a run in the bottom of the third. Freshman Hope Klicker reached on an error scoring Maples allowing the Cougars to take a 3-2 lead.
Junior Heather Robb blasted a homer to right center, tying the ball game at three. Robb's home run was her second of the tournament. Senior Amanda Lonergan doubled to center scoring sophomore Kelsey Hodgson and junior Ashton Jarrett, as the Cougars took a 5-3 lead. Lonergan scored the sixth run for the Cougars on a double from sophomore Lizzy Vaughn.
Klicker (16-9) gets her second win of the tournament, while Mattson (14-18) takes the loss. Klicker allowed three hits and recorded a game-high five strikeouts.
College of Charleston improves their season record to 34-22. The Cougars will play the winner of the Appalachian State and Elon game later this evening at 5:00 p.m in the consolation bracket. With the win, College of Charleston eliminates UNCG from the tournament. The Spartans end their season at 22-34.
