No. 3 South Carolina 7, Furman 0
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Evan Marzilli belted a three-run fifth inning home run to break open a low scoring game and lead nationally third-ranked South Carolina to a 7-0 shutout of Furman in baseball action Wednesday evening at Carolina Stadium.
The victory, which was delayed by a 58-minute pre-game rain delay, improves South Carolina to 37-12 on the season while Furman falls to 22-26.
With South Carolina leading 1-0 and in the bottom of the fifth, Dante Rosenberg drew a two-out walk, and Joey Pankake followed by steering a single through the right side of the infield. Marzilla then launched a three-run home run off Paladin reliever Matt Solter over the right field wall to stretch the advantage to 4-0.
The three-run clout was Marzilli's second of the season, with his first coming in an 8-5 win over Furman in Greenville on Mar. 20. He finished with three hits in five at bats and matched a career high with four RBI.
South Carolina added two unearned runs in the seventh after Paladin rightfielder Heath Burton dropped a fly ball off the bat of Joey Pankake. Dantzler's single scored Rosenberg, who had opened the inning with a walk, and Kyle Martin plated Pankake with a sacrifice fly.
The Gamecocks made it 7-0 in the eighth on Marzilli's fourth RBI of the contest, a single to left field.
South Carolina finished with nine hits, and four Gamecock pitchers combined to limit Furman to just four hits, all singles, two of which went to freshman Chris Ohmstede.
Marzilli got South Carolina on the board in the first inning after he singled with one out, stole second, and came around to score on LB Dantzler's two-out single.
Gamecock starter Joel Seddon (2-0) earned the victory, tossing shutout ball and allowing just two hits and a walk over five innings. He fanned four.
Paladin starting pitcher Ben Carlson (1-5) was charged with the loss, allowing a run on three hits in three innings of work.
