BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford senior first baseman Saxon Butler was named one of Collegiate Baseball's Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week on Monday.
Butler was also named the Southern Conference's Co-Player of the Week earlier on Monday.
Butler led Samford with a .429 (9-for-21) average with two doubles, a triple, three home runs and 11 RBI in helping the Bulldogs to a 4-1 record in five games last week. Butler was particularly strong in the Bulldogs' SoCon series sweep at Davidson as he hit .500 (7-for-14) with a double, a triple, two homers and eight RBI.
In Sunday's 15-6 win over Davidson, Butler had one of the best games of his career. The senior from Oxford, Ala., finished just a single away from hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, a home run and three RBI.
For the season, Butler leads Samford with a .356 batting average. Butler is second on the team in home runs with 10 and in RBI with 43.
Butler and Samford will return to action on Tuesday, May 1, when the Bulldogs play host to in-state rival Troy. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
