Gilmer paces Furman at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. -- Senior Lee Gilmer placed sixth with a time of 3:55.11 in the 1500m to lead the Furman track and field teams in the first day of the Duke Invitational Friday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Sophomore Zach Duskin finished sixth in the developmental 200m, turning in a time of 23.29, then placed seventh with a time of 50.84 in the developmental 400m. Junior Raul Rodriquez took tenth place in the developmental 400m with a time of 51.25, and senior Michael Kelly finished 15th in the developmental 200m (24.01). In the 1500m, sophomore James Perez placed 11th, recording a time of 3:56.95.
For the Paladin women’s team, senior Erin Barker finished 12th with a time of 4:40.89 in the 1500m event. Freshman Emily Zizzi took second place in the developmental 1500m event, turning in a time of 4:56.80. Fellow rookie Rachel Gilbert placed 14th with a time of 1:03.06 in the developmental 400m.
The meet concludes on Saturday. Field events will begin at 9 a.m., followed by track events beginning at 9:45 a.m.
Two Furman athletes will compete at the Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C. on Saturday. Junior Scott DesMarais will participate in the shot put and discus events, while junior Cortez Johnson will run in the 100m and 200m.
Furman has strong outing at Terrier Relays
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Furman junior Scott DesMarais posted a mark of 44.43m (145-09) to take second place Saturday at the Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C. Junior Cortez Johnson placed third in the 100m at the meet, recording a time of 10.94.
The remaining members of the Paladin track and field teams competed in the final day of the Duke Invitational Friday at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, N.C. Sophomore James Perez won the developmental 800m with a time of 1:54.37 and was followed by freshman William Ivey, who took second place in the event with a time of 1:55.37. Junior Wilkerson Given placed seventh in the event after notching a time of 1:57.32. Freshman Tripp Hurt placed fourth with a time of 9:19.02 in the 3,000m Steeplechase.
Senior Brooke Mosteller led the Furman women’s team, placing third with a time of 7:19.36 in the 2000m Steeplechase. Rookie Sinead Haughey finished fourth in the 3000m with a time of 10:02.73, while freshman Blair Burke took ninth in the 3000m with a time of 11:32.86 to round out the Paladin top-10 finishers.
The Paladins will compete at the Furman Invitational on April 14 at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex in Greenville, S.C.
Samford’s Allen breaks school record
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford began competition at the Tiger Track Invitational Friday with the javelin and hammer throw events.
Emily Allen broke her own school record in the women's hammer throw, placing seventh with a best distance of 178-7 (54.44m). SoCon Field Athlete of the Week Shelby Builta placed 24th in the event (139-8, 42.57m) and also competed in the women's javelin, where she finished fourth (127-6, 38.87m).
For the men, Thomas Oliver led the way in the javelin with a fourth-place finish (205-2, 62.53m) with Joshua Davies finishing 21st (153-9, 46.86m). Kyle Kirby, competing unattached, placed third in the men's hammer throw (191-9, 58.46m).
Elon has strong weekend at Duke and Liberty Invites
ELON, N.C. – The Elon track and field team competed in both the Duke Invitational and Liberty Collegiate Invitational today, April 6.
In Durham, N.C., at the Duke Invitational, Veronica Luedke placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.75.
Christine Pacewicz and Brennan McDavid finished 28th and 39th, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run with times of 4:51.37 and 4:55.18. In the 1,500m developmental run,
Jenny Gallagher (5:05.58) and Kylie Womack (5:08.65) claimed 11th and 14th.
Katelyn O’Dunne took 11th in section C of the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:26.23, while Kaitlin Stober earned 14th in section B after posting a 18:49.98.
At the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., Suzanne Martin took second in the javelin with a heave of 130’4”, while Jordan Lee placed 10th with a throw of 87’1”. Alyssa Girvin made a toss of 137’6” in the hammer through to finish 13th.
Louise Prevoteau sits first in the heptathlon with 2,848 points after four events. The freshman finished second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.94), first in the high jump (5’4.25”), fifth in the shot put (29’6.5”) and fourth in the 200-meter dash (26.39).
The Elon track and field team broke two records today in competition at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational and the Duke Invitational today, April 7.
Louise Prevoteau broke the three-year old school record in the heptathlon at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., on her way to first in the event with a point total of 4,854. The freshman took first in the long jump (18’3”), third in the javelin (94’4”) and first in the 800-meter run (2:19.06).
The 4x100-meter relay team, comprised of Dana Cataldo, Kayleigh Birks, Cara Hughes and Veronica Luedke, finished second with a time of 47.75.
In the 100-meter dash, Cataldo matched her school record with a time of 12.29 for fourth. Birks finished ninth in the event after posting a time of 12.75, while Hughes earned 14th with a time of 13.15. Cataldo (25.62), Birks (26.15) and Hughes (27.22) claimed fifth, 11th and 19th in the 200m.
Abigail Steinsiek posted a 1:02.90 for 11th in the 400-meter dash and took ninth in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:09.36. Luedke claimed seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.85. In the 800-meter run, Erin Macbeth earned 19th after clocking a 2:33.05.
In the field events, Claire Smith took second in the pole vault after reaching a height of 10’11.75”. Jordan Lee reached 5’1.75” in the high jump for eighth. Alyssa Girvin (122’4”) and Charlise Morgan (92’4”) finished 14th and 29th, respectively, in the discus. In the shot put, Morgan hit a mark of 42’9.75” for sixth. Janelle McNeil earned 20th in the long jump with a leap of 16’1.75 and 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 35’9”.
At the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., Bria Bell fell just short of her school record in the 200m with a time of 24.48 for fifth. Amy Salek finished right behind in sixth after posting a 24.71. Salek also earned fourth in the 400m with a time of 55.23.
Emily Tryon took fourth in the 3,000-meter stepplechase after clocking a time of 11:02.76. Allyson Oram posted a 10:08.23 for ninth in the 3,000-meter run, while Morgan Denecke claimed 15th with a time of 10:27.19.
In the 800m developmental run, Christine Pacewicz posted the best time for the Phoenix with a 2:22.73 for sixth. Brennan McDavid followed in seventh with a 2:22.92 and Ellie Taff took ninth with a time of 2:23.56.
Elon will compete in the Kent Taylor – Joe Hilton UNC Invitational next Saturday, April 14, in Chapel Hill, N.C.
UNCG athletes record personal bests at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – UNCG's track and field teams ran several personal best times at the Duke Invitational on Friday, highlighted by Abraham Kemboi’s second-place finish in the 10,000 meters with a time of 31:03.15.
Chelsea Sumney and Shaina Sumney also set new personal bests in the seeded section of the 1,500 meters en route to fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively.
The impressive performances continued for the women in the developmental 1,500m, as Jade Farlow finished fifth overall in a time of 4:59.35, Chelsea Willette set a personal record with 5:02.02 and Emily Vasquez ran a season-best 5:06.70 to win her heat.
On the men’s side, Tyron Alston broke his personal best time set earlier this year, running 4:00.93 to finish 26th overall in the 1,500m. Taylor Day finished 45th in the event with a time of 4:07.23.
Freshman Dylan Belles had an impressive debut in the 10,000m, running 32:44.63, which qualifies him for the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships on June 15-17, in Bloomington, Ind.
The second day of competition will begin Saturday morning with the women’s developmental 800 meters.
UNCG’s contingent at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif., is running late Friday evening. Results will be available Saturday morning at UNCGSpartans.com.
UNCG records fall at Stanford Invitational
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Multiple UNCG records fell late Friday courtesy of the four Spartans competing at the Stanford Invitational. Paul Chelimo picked up right where he left off last weekend, this time running the second-fastest collegiate time in the country for 5,000 meters.
In a race with many professionals, Chelimo recorded a fifth-place finish in 13:32.89 to set a new school record.
Joey Thompson also had a stellar day for UNCG, crushing his own school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.45, crossing the line in seventh place.
Paul Katam was just six seconds off his personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing the 6.2-mile race in 29:34.57.
Ashley Schnell also shattered the school record she owned in the 5,000m by 34 seconds. Her time of 16:01.54 was good for fourth place in her heat.
Several Spartans will be competing Saturday on the second day of the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
College of Charleston’s D’Orazio breaks school record at Duke Invitational
DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Alyssa D’Orazio broke her own school record in the 800-meter run as the College of Charleston women’s track & field team wrapped up a good weekend of competition at the Duke Invitational Saturday. The Cougars had five top-five performances including D’Orazio’s school record.
D’Orazio ran most the race with teammate freshman Hayley McMahon at her side, and put on a late charge and finished 5th in 2:11.23. McMahon ran a solid race and finished 11th in 2:14.62, the fourth best time in school history.
Senior Kristen Wolfe came back from running the 400-meter hurdles yesterday to finish second-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:52.47, the second fastest time in school history.
Fellow Senior Emily Smith cleared 1.73 meters (5-08.00 feet) to finish third in the competition. Her mark is the fourth best in school history.
The Cougars 4X100-meter relay team ran well as they finished in fourth-place. The team of Laura Call, Christa Horrocks, Lorna Doucette and Dyshia Parks ran 49.42, the eighth best time in school history.
In the Cougars last event of the day, the 4X400-meter relay, the team of Horrocks, Wolfe, D’Orazio and McMahon finished fifth in 3:57.07, the fourth best time in school history.
Wofford breaks four school records at Terrier Relays
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men’s and women’s track and field teams saw four school records fall, including three records by one relay foursome at the Terriers Relays Saturday at Viking Track.
On the women’s side, the 4x800m team of Nicole Klasnic, Katie Kessler, Alyssa Burkert and Emily Gothberg set the school record with first place finish and a time of 9:21.47. The foursome also set the school record in the spring medley relay with a time of 4:06.28 and another first place finish. The foursome also took first in the final event of the day, the 4x400m, with a time of 3:57.30.
The women’s DMR team of Kiersten Ellsworth, Megan Kauffman, Andrea Kelsey and Sam Hughes set the school record with a time of 13:24.92 and took second place.
Alissa Williams took first with a time of 18:38.82 in the 5,000m.
Kathleen Woods set a personal best and finished fifth with a distance of 34.19m and had a solid finish in eighth with a distance of 1.56m in the shot put.
On the men’s side, Joe Bailey set a personal best in the long jump and took sixth with a distance of 6.50m. Tyrell Jemison also set a personal mark with a time of 11.54 in the 100m and finished in 11th.
The Terriers will return to the track at Western Carolina for their next meet on April 13.
Western Carolina wrapped up competition at Tiger Track Classic
AUBURN, Ala. --Western Carolina’s track & field teams wrapped up competition in the two-day Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University. The Catamounts tallied 27 top-ten finishes, highlighted by freshman Alisha Bradshaw setting a school record in the discus.
Bradshaw came to the meet having thrown a previous best 44.15m in the event. The freshman threw the record-setting mark, 152-11 (46.60m), on her first attempt of the day Saturday afternoon. The previous record was 146-5 set by Zakiyyah Stewart a season ago. Bradshaw’s throw earned her a fourth-place finish in the event.
Teammate Meghan Morton – the reigning SoCon Field Athlete of the Month - continues to be a solid, steady finisher in the javelin. Morton won her third meet of the season with a 43.07m throw. Morton’s throw was just seven feet off of the school record. Summer Hughes earned a third place finish with her throw of 40.08m.
Continuing with the women’s team, Jocelyn Keen added to her impressive 2012 outdoor resume with another top-three finish, finishing the 800m run with a new personal record. Keen placed third with her new best time of 2:08.82. Keen has placed in the top-three in all four meets this season, including three wins. Lena Elliott also notched a top-ten finish, placing ninth (2:13.54).
In the women’s 400m, Felisha Garren placed third (54.63) as Genevieve Emrick crossed the line in 56.03, finishing seventh. In the men’s 400m, Benny Davis also finished seventh with his time of 47.98.
The men’s 4x400-meter relay team – consisting of Aaron Tribble, Brandon Hairston, Aaron Harris and Benny Davis – ran its fastest time of the 2012 season racing across the stripe in 3:11.33, finishing fourth.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Tyler Bentley ran a personal best 53.22 to finish fourth. Freshman Abraham Faison finished just behind Bentley in 53.77, also a personal best, earning seventh.
In the men’s pole vault, sophomore Keith Leonard set a personal outdoor best with his vault of 4.60m. Leonard placed fourth. Wayne Parker finished eighth, successfully clearing the bar in 4.45m.
Western Carolina travels to Boone next Friday for its final tune-up before the SoCon Outdoor Championships for the Appalachian Open Meet. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m.
Appalachian State men have impressive performances at Auburn Tiger Track
AUBURN, Ala. – Appalachian State University men's track and field turned in another impressive performance at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic on Friday and Saturday at Hutsell-Rosen Track.
Chris Moen and Darius Purcell paced the Mountaineers with top finishes in their respective events. Moen captured first-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 8:59.70 while Purcell grabbed another high jump title with a leap of 7'1.75".
Appalachian also finished with two more runners in the top-three of the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Sean Soderman (9:07.49) and Josh Cox (9:07.78) took second and third, respectively.
Alex Taylor turned in an impressive performance as he finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:45.26. In the sprint events, Dennis Moore paced the Apps with top-10 finishes in both the 100 (sixth) and 200-meter dashes (10th).
Moore also helped ASU's 4x100-meter relay team finish fourth in its event. The senior sprinter, along with teammates AJ Dohanic, Landon Powell and Justin Thomas turned in a time of 40.70 seconds.
Jared Stalling rounded out the Apps top-10 finishes with solid performances in the throw events. His toss of 55'9" was good for third in the shot put while his mark of 175'6" in the hammer throw placed him 10th.
On the women's side, Asia Dunlap and Cassie Crawford led the Mountaineers with two top-five finishes. Dunlap took fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:09.84 while Crawford's leap of 12'1.50" in the pole vault placed her fourth.
The Apps had three runners finish in the top-10 of the 1,500-meter run as Amanda Hamilton, Allison Cook and Justine Stocks finished in the sixth, ninth and 10th spots, respectively.
Kaitlin Cagle also turned in an impressive performance in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:01.90 while Breanna Alston rounded out the track events with a 10th-place finish in the 200-meter dash (24.02 seconds).
In field events, Shaqueila Robinson grabbed seventh in the seeded high jump (5'7") and Mary Theresa Montgomery finished eighth in the non-seeded event (5'3").
Gayshawna Watkins continued her impressive season with a solid showing in the shot put. The junior thrower finished fourth with a toss of 44'0.5".
The Mountaineers return to action with their only home meet of the season, the Appalachian Invitational, next Friday, April 13.
Davidson’s Lantz breaks school record
DURHAM, N.C./SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore Andrew Lantz broke the Davidson men’s track and field record in the 800-meter run Saturday at the Duke Invitational. The Wildcats also competed at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford.
Lantz placed sixth in 1:50.87 to break Douglas Noreen’s record of 1:51.06 set in 2007.
Sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes and senior Ian Tupper both posted Davidson all-time top-10 best performances in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing in sixth (9:33.44) and seventh (9:34.17), respectively.
On Friday, senior Ryan Hopkins competed in the 1500-meter run, along with junior Demetrios Pagonis, and placed 10th in 3:56.86.
Juniors Vincent Weir and Wes Reynolds both earned top-five finishes in the second section of the 5000-meter run, placing second (14:47.23) and fifth (14:50.40), respectively.
Saturday at Wofford, sophomore Michael Lorentsen won the pole vault with a mark of 12-11 ½ (3.95m).
Sophomore Pierce DeRico placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.44 seconds and freshman Cyrus Bahram was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles in 57.52. Sophomore Stewart Dalton was seventh in the long jump with a top mark of 21-2 ½ (6.46m).
The ‘Cats were also strong in the relays, led by a second-place finish in 7:58.18 for the 4x800-meter relay team of junior Will Mitchell, freshman Wesley Laytham, sophomore Nate Faubion and freshman Sal del Giudice, which ranks among the top-10 best all-time performances in the event at Davidson.
Davidson also ran the sprint medley relay, with the team of DeRico, junior Eduardo Vaca, senior Lee Dorsey and freshman Greg Sargent placing fifth in 3:51.17. The time ranks as the sixth-best performance in the event for the ‘Cats all-time
Davidson will next compete at Winthrop’s Carolina’s Cup Friday.
