CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team posted a 7-0 win at Western Carolina today. The Lady Mocs improved to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in Southern Conference action with the win. UTC's 13 wins are the most for the program since going 13-10 in 2003.
All eight Lady Mocs saw action today with UTC sweeping three doubles and six singles matches. Junior Jenna Nurik and freshman Claire Mulyadi started off the day with an 8-0 win over Sarah Walters and Taylor Casey and No. 3.
Sophomore Alexa Flynn and freshman Kaylene Chadwell followed up with a point-clinching 8-2 win over Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz and Megan McLinden at No. 1. Seniors Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing closed out the doubles with an 8-3 win over Karen Jimenez and Katie Barry at No. 2.
Wishing and fellow senior Charlotte Bossy quickly put UTC up 3-0 with a pair of (6-0, 6-0) wins at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively. It was Wishings first win in a dual this season as she moves to 3-2 in singles action. Bossy improves to 5-1 in dual matches with her first SoCon win this year.
Mulyadi clinched the win with a (6-1, 6-1) victory over Barry at No. 4. Mulyadi improved to 7-6 overall while snapping a five-match losing streak. Nurik was next off the court with her 20th win of the season, a (6-4, 6-4) win over Diaz at No. 1. She leads the team with a 20-8 overall mark and is two wins shy of her career-high.
Senior Shaina Singh moved up to No. 3 where she had a (7-5, 6-2) win over Jimenez. Chadwell was forced to a third set and won the match when McLinden retired before the super-tiebreaker began. It was the fifth-straight win for Chadwell.
College of Charleston 4, Elon 3
ELON, N.C. - After dropping the doubles point, the Elon women's tennis team nearly upset 61st-ranked Southern Conference unbeaten College of Charleston, but Cougar freshman Samantha Maddox managed to pull out a 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3 victory over Phoenix rookie Barbora Lazarova at number three singles to clinch the 4-3 victory for the visitors at The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
The nationally-ranked Cougars moved to 18-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference. The Phoenix dropped to 14-7 on the year and ended the SoCon regular season with a 5-4 mark.
After Jansaker tied the match at three-all with her 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Caroline Newman, all eyes turned to court four. After Lazarova won the first set, Maddox battled out a 7-6 (6) second set to send the match into a third set. Maddox finally got the break to take a 5-3 advantage and served out the match-clinching 6-3 set.
The Phoenix fell behind, 1-0, after the Cougars captured the doubles point with wins at number two and three. But Elon's number one doubles team of Jordan Johnston and Jansaker improved to an impressive 18-2 on the year after claiming an 8-2 decision over College of Charleston's Irene Viana and Jamie Harrell.
After Bryn Khoury dropped a hard-fought match at number two singles, rookie Maria Camara Ruiz gave the Phoenix its first point of the day to limit the Cougars to a 2-1 edge. Camara Ruiz defeated CofC's Katie Lee in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4 at number six.
Viviana Stavreva knotted the match at two-all at number five after claiming a three-set win over Jenny Falcone. Stavreva dropped a heart breaking 7-6 (5) decision in the first set, but stormed back for dominant 6-0, 6-1 wins in the second and third to win her match.
The Cougars were quick to reclaim the lead with a win at number one, as Christin Newman handed Johnston a 6-4, 6-3 setback. The loss marks only the second for Johnston in her last 10 matches.
Jansaker helped the Phoenix tie the match at three-all with her come-from-behind win at number three singles over Caroline Newman to give the Phoenix a chance at the win.
Samford 6, Davidson 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. --- The Samford University women's tennis team tallied its second-straight road win Friday as the Bulldogs posted a decisive 6-1 triumph against the Davidson Wildcats in a key Southern Conference contest held at the Covington Tennis Courts.
With the victory, Samford (12-5, 4-4 SoCon) improved to 3-2 on the road this season and earned its second-consecutive win away from home. On March 25, the Bulldogs started their road winning streak by rolling to a convincing 5-1 triumph at Wofford.
In Friday's 6-1 victory against Davidson (4-16, 1-6 SoCon), Samford swept the doubles competition and then received dominant straight-set singles wins from Kristin Lewis, Stephanie N'tcha, Rebecca Kirven, Lindsey Mallory and Jessica Diamond.
Mallory, the Bulldogs' talented senior from Louisville, Ky., notched her fifth-straight singles victory Friday and improved her dual-match record on the season to 11-4. She also improved her stellar SoCon mark to 5-2 in singles play.
