BOONE, N.C. - The Mountaineers picked up their second shutout in three matches, as Appalachian State University women's tennis defeated Davidson, 5-0, in Southern Conference action at ASU Tennis Courts on Tuesday.

Appalachian State (11-8, 4-4 SoCon) has matched its win total from last season and surpassed its previous total of three league wins, while Davidson fell to 3-15 (0-5 SoCon).

With the threat of rain looming, the squads' coaches agreed to start play with singles action. ASU's No. 6 player Gabby Gabriel jumped out to the fastest win of the day, as the freshman picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Blake Nickels for her third-straight win.

At No. 2 singles, junior Jennifer Ansari stole two break points from Katharine Dicconson to take a 3-0 lead in the opening games and held on for a 6-2 set before sweeping the second set in her 6-2, 6-0 win.

Appalachian junior Ellie Linsell fell behind early in her match at No. 1 singles, but pulled through for a 6-4 first set before winning five straight games to end her match, 6-4, 6-1, giving ASU a 3-0 lead.

The match-clinching point came from senior Gabriela Celi in the No. 3 match, as the Mountaineer won six straight games over Nisha Crouser to win the first set and kept up the pressure in her 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Sophomore Jessica Thaggard wrapped up the match with her 6-0, 6-0 shutout at No. 4 singles before ominous storm clouds rolled into Boone and halted play with the Mountaineers in front, 5-0.
