UNCG's Rios Named Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNCG's Annette Rios has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches March 26 through April 1 the conference announced today (April 3).  Rios went 6-0 in both singles and doubles play last week as the Spartans won conference matches against Appalachian State (6-1), Wofford (7-0) and Furman (5-2).  The junior earned the award one week after her teammate Niltooli Wilkins picked up the weekly accolade.  The Player of the Week selection is made by the conference office.

Competing at No. 3 singles against Appalachian State's Gabriela Celi, Rios rebounded from dropping the opening set to claim a three-set victory (4-6, 6-1, 6-4).  The Santa Ana, El Salvador native topped Audre Coventry of Wofford 6-2, 4-6,
1-0 (10-4) on Saturday for her second win of the week. 

The Spartans and Furman entered Sunday's match as two of the three unbeaten teams in league play.  Rios came away with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 three-set win over Margaret Boyette at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for UNCG.

Rios and teammate Kayla Gammie ran their win streak to 10 with three victories at No. 3 doubles last week.  The pair topped ASU's Kim-Lea Dinh and Blakely Bean, 8-2.  Rios and Gammie also recorded victories over Wofford's Emily Przystawski and Lucy Schermerhorn (8-1) and Furman's Lauren Kline and Kelly Sullivan (8-4).

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State's Gabby Gabriel, College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis, Elon's Jordan Johnston, Furman's Katherine Oudin, Georgia Southern's Paola Garrido and Chattanooga's Shaina Singh.
