SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State junior right fielder Tyler Tewell has been named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week while Wofford left-handed pitcher Cash Collins has been selected as the league's Pitcher of the Week for all games from April 16-22.
Tewell batted .500 (6-for-12) and hit safely in all three games last week as the Mountaineers swept Furman in Boone. Half of his six hits went for extra bases (double, triple and home run), good for 1.000 slugging percentage. The junior from Charlotte, N.C., drove in the winning run with walk-off single to right field in bottom of the ninth inning of 6-5 win in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, capping a 3-for-4 performance that also included a double and two runs scored. In the series finale, Tewell went 2-for-5 with a three runs scored and a career-high five RBIs in 14-0 rout. His two hits in the finale included an RBI triple and his first-career grand slam.
Collins combined with Eric Eck for a 2-0 shutout of Elon on Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader. The senior from Barnwell, S.C., tied a season-high with eight innings on the mound while allowing only two hits. He struck out six with a pair of walks. The shutout was the third of the season for Wofford, and it marked Collins' second career combined shutout victory. The win improved the southpaw's overall record to 4-5 on the year.
Other hitters receiving consideration were Marty Gantt (College of Charleston), Joe Jackson (The Citadel), Ryan Kinsella (Elon), Michael Burruss (Georgia Southern), Trevor Edwards (UNCG), C.K. Irby (Samford) and Matthew Pelt (Wofford).
Other top performers among pitchers were Rob Marcello (Appalachian State), Ryan West (College of Charleston), Austin Pritcher (The Citadel), Spencer Medick (Elon), Justin Hess (Georgia Southern), Jordan Smith (Western Carolina) and Brandon Yarusi (Wofford).
