CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Appalachian State men won their third consecutive Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship, while the Mountaineer women claimed their second consecutive team title at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
The Mountaineer men finished with a total of 238 points, while the women scored 207.5 points. Western Carolina finished in second place on both sides.
Sunday's events began with the conclusion of the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Samford's Ashley Cope defended her title in the heptathlon with 4,743 points. She finished second in the javelin with a throw of 34.28m (112'6") and in the 800m dash with a time of 2:23.27. Her leap of 4.87m (15'11.75") placed her sixth in the long jump.
Appalachian State's Jake Goodchild won the decathlon with 6,424 points. He finished first in the pole vault with a vault of 4.43m (14'6.25") and the discus with a throw of 38.64m (126'09"). He placed fourth in the 1,500m run with a time of 5:04.39 and the javelin with a throw of 45.79m (150'3"). In the men's 110m hurdles, he posted a time of 18.34 in the 110m hurdles.
In the men's shot put, Appalachian State's Jared Stalling took the title with a throw of 17.02m (55'10.25"). On the women's side, College of Charleston's Sarah Sisk won with a mark of 13.55m (44'5.5").
Erika Ivey of Appalachian State won the women's triple jump with a leap of 12.09m (39'8"). On the men's side, Western Carolina's Cornelius Williams won the event with a jump of 14.99m (49'2.25").
Appalachian State swept the men's and women's 4x100m relays. The men, who have won the event for three consecutive years, finished with a time of 40.46, while the women posted a time of 45.92.
UNCG swept the 1,500m races with Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell winning their respective races. Chelimo recorded a time of 3:49.06, while defending champion Schnell finished with a time of 4:27.92.
Western Carolina took the top five spots in the men's 400m dash with Aaron Harris taking the title with a time of 48.03. On the women's side, Elon's Amy Salek recorded a time of 54.66.
Ebony Carter of Georgia Southern defended her title in the 100m dash with a time of 11.53. Appalachian State's Dennis Moore also defended his title in the event with a time of 10.35.
Appalachian State's AJ Dohanic crossed the finish line with a time of 14.11 to take the men's 110m hurdle title. Georgia Southern swept the women's 100m hurdles while Jasmine Billings took the top spot with a time of 13.68.
Alisha Bradshaw of Western Carolina won the women's discus with a throw 43.71m (143'5"). With a new Southern Conference record throw of 52.25m (171'5"), Appalachian State's Jared Stalling won the men's discus event.
Western Carolina's Jocelyn Keen won the women's 800m dash with a time of 2:10.99. On the men's side, Davidson's Andrew Lantz posted the fastest time of 1:54.60.
Western Carolina's Sam Lusty won the men's 400m hurdles with a time of 53.36. Appalachian State's Shenita Martin won the event on the women's side with a time of 1:01.27.
Emily Smith of College of Charleston tied the league record of 1.78m (5'10") to take the title in the women's high jump. Appalachian State's Daryl Saunders won on the men's side and recorded a new SoCon record of 2.18m (7'1.75"). Saunders' mark broke a record that was set back in 1984.
Benny Davis of Western Carolina posted a time of 20.82 to claim the men's 200m dash title. Appalachian State's Breanna Alston defended her title in the event with a time of 23.68.
Davidson's Ryan Hopkins won the men's 5,000m run with a time of 14:44.36, while Appalachian State's Amanda Hamilton posted the fastest time at 17:07.46.
Western Carolina swept the 4x400m relays. The Catamount men picked up their eighth consecutive title with a time of 3:15.90. The Catamount team consisted of Aaron Tribble, Aaron Harris, Demari Boswell and Benny Davis. The women's team of Lena Elliott, Genevieve Emrick, Jocelyn Keen and Felisha Garren, posted a time of 3:46.80.
