CULLOWHEE, N.C. - At the conclusion of day one of the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship, Appalachian State leads on the men's and women's side. The Mountaineer men have 60 points, while the women have 61 points after day one of competition at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

Saturday began with the women's heptathlon and the men's decathlon.

Samford's Ashley Cope leads the field in the heptathlon with 2,881 points after four events. Cope won the 200m dash in a time of 25.98, second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.64. Her mark of 10.11m (33'2") placed her third in the shot put and her 1.53m (5'0.25") jump placed her fifth in the high jump.

Appalachian State's Jake Goodchild leads the field in the decathlon with 3,493 points. He finished first in the shot put with a mark of 12.70m (41'8") and the long jump with a leap of 6.60m (21'8"). Goodchild placed second in the high jump with a 1.81m (5'11.25") and 100m dash (11.48). He finished fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 51.86.

UNCG's Paul Katam won the men's 10,000m run with a time of 31:26.09. On the women's side, College of Charleston's Dena O'Brien crossed the finish line with a time of 35:55.44.

Western Carolina's Jamie Van Pelt won the men's hammer throw with a mark of 58.84m (193'). On the women's side, Samford's Emily Allen took the title with a throw of 55.17m (181').

With a vault of 3.90m (12'9.5"), Samford's Claire Goodson won the women's pole vault. Samford's Owen Wagoner took the men's pole vault title with a mark of 5.20m (17'0.75").

Western Carolina's Megan Morton won the women's javelin throw with a mark of 42.84m (140'7"). Samford's Thomas Oliver defended his title with a throw of 62.92m (206'.05").

With a leap of 5.93m, Georgia Southern's Jasmine Walker won the women's long jump. On the men's side, The Citadel's Edward Jones won the event with a jump of 7.30m (23'11.5").

Appalachian State's Chris Moen recorded a time of 9:03.32 to take the men's 3,000m steeplechase title. College of Charleston's Kristen Wolfe defended her title in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:48.26.
 
Preliminary trials were also held Saturday in the men's and women's 100m, 200m 400m, 400m hurdles and 800m races, the women's 100m high hurdles and the men's 110m high hurdles.

In the men's preliminary 400m, Benny Davis' Western Carolina had the top qualifying time of 48.03. Elon's Amy Salek won the women's 400m trial with a time of 54.94.

Appalachian State took the top qualifying spots in the men's and women's 100m dash. Last year's champion, Dennis Moore recorded a time of 10.65 in the men's 100m dash, while Breanna Alston posted an 11.89.

Appalachian State's AJ Dohanic won the men's 110m high hurdles prelim with a time of 14.35. With a time of 14.09, Georgia Southern's Jasmine Billings won the trial of the women's 100m high hurdles.

Davidson's Andrew Lantz won the preliminary 800m run with a time of 1:52.64. On the women's side, Western Carolina's Jocelyn Keen recorded the time of 2:09.46.

In the men's 400m hurdles, Western Carolina's Tyler Bentley finished in the top spot with a time of 53.44. Veronica Luedke from Elon posted the fastest qualifying time for the women's 400m hurdles at 1:01.71.

Western's Carolina's Benny Davis won the men's 200m trial with a time of 21.18, while defending champion, Breanna Alston from Appalachian State, posted a time of 24.20 on the women's side.

Sunday's events begin at 9:15 a.m. with the completion of the men's decathlon.
