Furman’s Mosteller sets new school record in 3,000m steeplechase
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Senior Brooke Mosteller established a new school and meet record with a time of 10:50.77 in the 3,000m Steeplechase, while fellow senior Lee Gilmer set a new Furman record with a time of 4:04.36 in the Blue Shoes Elite Mile, which was held Saturday in conjunction with the 15th annual Furman Invitational at the Irwin Belk Track Complex for Track and Field and Kelsey-West Track in Greenville, S.C. Paladin senior Erin Barker also set a new meet record in the 1,500m, winning the event with a time of 4:38.58.
Donnie Cowart of Ragged Mountain Racing won the Blue Shoes Elite Mile event, turning in a time of 4:00.62, coming in just shy of the sub-four minute mile mark.
The Paladins picked up first-place finishes in 12 individual events and one relay event at the meet. Besides Mosteller’s win in the steeplechase and Barker’s victory in the 1,500m, Furman senior Erin McChristian won the 100m hurdles with a time of 17.13, and rookie Shannon Murphy took first with a time of 59.76 in the 400m. Sophomore Alexa Wilton recorded a time of 1:07.58 for first in the 400m hurdles, and the Paladin 4x400m relay team of Barker, freshmen Blair Burke, Hannah Schilpp, and Emily Zizzi won the event after turning in a time of 4:10.61.
For the men’s team, sophomore John Klecker took first place in the 1,500m with a time of 4:00.12, while fellow sophomore placed first with a time of 49.67 in the 400m. Junior Cortez Johnson won the 100m after posting a time of 10.76, and junior Raul Rodriquez took the lead with a time of 23.13 in the 200m.
In the field events, freshman Gretchen Gabrielson won the women’s discus with a throw of 98-02, while junior Scott DesMarais placed first with a mark of 147-08 in the men’s discus then won the shot put with a throw of 44-0.50.
Several meet records were broken at the event. Besides the two records set by Mosteller and Barker in the collegiate women’s meet, Malia Ellington of the Community School of Davidson established two new high school girls’ records after winning the 1,600m with a time of 5:01.40 then taking the 3,200m title with a time of 10:57.62.
In the high school boys’ meet, D’Ante Flemming of Greer set a new record with a time of 49.64 in the 400m dash, while Pickens’ Hunter Harkins broke the record with a time of 57.71 in the 400m hurdles. In the field events, Bauvier Jackson of Broome recorded a throw of 152’9” in the discus, setting a new meet record. Greer’s relay teams established two records, with the 4x100m team posting a time of 43.44, then the 4x400m relay taking the title after tallying a time of 3:30.75.
The Furman track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships April 21-22 in Cullowhee, N.C.
Samford’s Seaman improved pole vault school record
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ---- Samford sent three competitors to this weekend’s Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., including Michael Seaman, who improved on his two-year-old school record in the men’s pole vault.
Seaman finished third with a height of 17-4.5 (5.30m), one of only two collegiate competitors in the invitational section of the men’s pole vault to reach that height. Julie McDonald competed in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, where she finished tenth with a season-best time of 14.03. Justin Emerson finished fifth in the men’s 100-meter dash, earning a mark of 10.75 as one of only three competitors in the event that was running against the wind.
Samford’s season continues next week in Cullowhee, N.C., at the 2012 SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Two days of competition begin on Saturday, April 21.
Elon turns in solid performances in final meet
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In the Elon track and field team’s final tune up before the outdoor conference championships, the team turned in several great performances, including two school records, at the Kent Taylor – Joe Hilton UNC Invitational today, April 14.
The 4x100-meter relay team, made up of Bria Bell, Dana Cataldo, Veronica Luedke and Amy Salek, set a new Elon record with a time of 46.55 for second place.
Bell took sixth in the 200-meter dash while setting a school record with a time of 24.60, breaking her previous record by seven one-hundredths of a second (24.67). Cataldo posted a 25.51 in the event for 10th.
In the 100-meter dash, Cataldo claimed sixth with a 12.44 and Cara Hughes finished 17th with a 13.53. Salek clocked a time of 55.46 in the 400-meter dash for third, while Luedke took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:03.02
Louise Prevoteau took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 18’5”, while Janelle McNeil claimed seventh in the triple jump with a jump of 36’1.25”. Jordan Lee cleared a height of 5’3” in the high jump for sixth.
In the javelin, Suzanne Martin finished after a throw of 126’6” and Lee took seventh with her heave of 101’. Claire Smith came in eighth in the pole vault after reaching a height of 10’9”.
Charlise Morgan finished fourth in the shot put after a toss of 44’6.75”, while Jennifer Jarvis took seventh with a throw of 36’1.25”. In the hammer throw, Alyssa Girvin threw for a distance of 139’6” and Morgan hit a mark of 137’9” for fifth and sixth, respectively. Girvin claimed ninth (114’8”) in the discus followed by Jarvis in 11th (104’8”).
The Phoenix will look to better last year’s program-best finish of third at the SoCon Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, April 21 – Sunday, April 22, in Cullowhee, N.C.
Davidson’s Weird win 3000m at Carolina’s Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Davidson junior Vincent Weir won the 3000-meter run to lead the Davidson men’s track and field team at the Carolina’s Cup hosted by Winthrop University Friday.
Weir’s time of 8:35.06 cracked the Davidson list of top-10 performances all-time in the event.
Sophomore Stewart Dalton was second in the long jump with a leap of 22-7 ¾ (6.90m), which ranks among the top-10 best performances at Davidson in that event, as well.
Freshman Sal del Giudice led a strong Wildcat showing in the 800-meter run with a third-place finish in 1:55.00. Freshman Wesley Laytham was sixth in 1:56.42, sophomore Nate Faubion was eighth in 1:56.88 and junior Will Mitchell 10th in 1:59.00 in the same event.
Sophomore Grayam Sailor-Tynes placed second in the 1500-meter run in 3:56.63 and was followed by senior Ian Tupper in third in 4:02.05.
In the hurdles, freshman Pierce DeRico was sixth in 15.28 seconds in the 110-meter and senior Taylor Martin 10th in 56.64 in the 400-meter.
In other field performances, sophomore Michael Lorentsen was second in the pole vault with a mark of 13 feet, 11 ¼ inches (4.25m), and freshman David Hutchins was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 39-8 (12.09m).
The meet was the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday and Sunday, Apr. 21-22 at Western Carolina.
Davidson’s women finish regular season at Carolina’s Cup
ROCK HILL, S.C. — In its final tuneup before heading to the conference championships next weekend, the Davidson women’s track and field team competed on Friday, April 13, at the Carolina’s University Cup hosted by Winthrop held at the Irwin Belk Track Complex.
The Wildcats competed in eight events and finished with 26 team points. Leading the way was Presley Parkes as the freshman again had an outstanding run in the 1500 Meter event. She raced to a second place showing on a time of 4:50.93.
The 3000 Meter run saw five Wildcats compete as they took third through seventh place at the finish line. Erin Osment scored six team points with her third place finish after closing with a time of 10:26.33. She was followed closely behind by Natalie Atabek, who was racing in her first spring event and was fourth on a time of 10:48.49 for five team points. Ali Cobb (5th, 10:50.07), Claire Naisby (6th, 10:52.59) and Lauren Carter (7th, 10:54.50) also represented the Wildcats in the event.
Grace Watt led a trio of Wildcat runners in the 800 Meter run when she earned a seventh place finish with a time of 2:19.86. Jane Gay came in two spots behind Watt on a time of 2:26.51 and fellow senior Brooke Senken gave Davidson three top-10 finishers with a 10th place showing and a time of 2:28.59.
In the 200 and 400 Meter dash, the duo of Mackenzie Hicks and Ashley Page raced in both events. In the 200, Hicks was 18th when she came across the finish line with a time of 28:57. Page was right behind her on a time of 30:63. They had eighth and 11th place finishes, respectively, in the 400, with Hicks getting the better time of 1:03.86 for eighth place. Page had a time of 1:05.70 to earn 11th place.
Mary Grace Gordon had a busy day competing in the 100 Meter dash as well as the Long Jump. The freshman picked up a 12th place finish in the 100 Meter dash when she raced past the finish line on a time of 13:32. Then in the Long Jump, Gordon was seventh with a jump of 5.13 meters.
Rounding out the field event members was Pole Vaulters Lexie Winograd and Molly Marshall, who were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Davidson will now ready itself for the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, April 21-22, in Cullowhee, N.C.
Western Carolina finishes regular season at Appalachian Open
BOONE, N.C.--Western Carolina sent a select group to the Appalachian Open in preparation for the 2012 Southern Conference Championship that will be held next weekend in Cullowhee. Catamounts participated in the pole vault events and the men’s high jump. Even with the smaller group that traveled, WCU had five top-five finishes.
In the men’s pole vault, Catamounts filled three of the top-five positions. Redshirt sophomore Keith Leonard recorded a personal best clearing the bar successfully at 4.76m. Teammates Matt Stenger (4.61m) and Wayne Parker (4.46m) finished third and fifth, respectively. On the women’s side, Devyn Ressler recorded a personal best 3.36m, finishing third.
Competing in the high jump, freshman Cory Patterson tied his season-best with a jump of 1.91m.
The Catamounts return to action next weekend as Western Carolina hosts the 2012 Southern Conference Track & Field Championship with events taking place on Saturday and Sunday. The first events, the men’s 10,000m and hammer will begin at 9:30 am on Saturday morning. Admission to the meet is free. Appalachian State has strong outing at Appalachian Open
BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's track and field dominated the 2012 Appalachian Open, capturing 10 first-place finishes on Friday at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
In the Mountaineers' final meet before next week's Southern Conference Outdoor Championships, the Apps put together another solid performance.
Jared Stalling led the way with two first-place finishes in the discus and shot put events. His toss of 168'10" in the discus marked a new personal-best and gave him the third-best mark in ASU history.
Stalling's throw of 53'3.25" in the shot put fell just shy of his previous personal best, but was a full five feet better than his nearest competitor. His mark in the hammer throw (192') placed him second and topped his previous personal record to give him the fifth-best mark in school history.
In addition to Stalling's performance, Nick Sansotta, Caleb Poplin and Zane Lail finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put while Poplin and Lail each finished in the top five in the discus. Poplin also took fourth in the hammer throw.
Jacob Stowe had a solid performance in the pole vault on Friday. His leap of 16'0.75" placed him first and also put him in a tie for third in ASU history.
Despite the absence of its top high jumper, Darius Purcell, the Apps still picked up a win in the high jump as Daryl Saunders’ leap of 6'11" gave him the victory and moved him into seventh in school history.
Appalachian also fared extremely well on the track as its 4x100-meter relay team of Dennis Moore, Justin Thomas, AJ Dohanic and Landon Powell ran a blistering 40.55 seconds to take the top spot.
Dohanic also picked up an individual victory in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28 seconds, just four one-hundredths of a second off his personal best.
Powell and Thomas finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-meter dash with times of 10.82 and 10.91 seconds.
ASU's distance and middle-distance runners also put forth a strong effort. Raphael Rojas took first in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:55.19 while Ashton Smith (15:51.03) and Charles Wofford (15:58.17) placed first and second, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run.
On the women's side, Chelsea Farr picked up a victory in the pole vault competition with a leap of 12'6" to top her personal best and give her the third-highest mark in school history. Cassie Crawford took second in the pole vault while Meredith Wilson and Debra Domermuth tied for fourth.
Gayshawna Watkins came away as one of the day's top performers with three first-place finishes of her own. Her toss of 159'2" won the hammer throw while her throw of 151'4" in the discus was also good for first and a new personal record. Watkins also grabbed a win in the shot put with a mark of 44'6".
The Apps were dominant in both the discus and shot put competitions as they grabbed the top four spots in each. Jasmine Suydam took second while Jocelyn Parnell and Katherine Lehart finished third and fourth, respectively.
On the track, Appalachian was led by a first-place finish from its 4x100-meter relay team of Kristen Campbell, D’Shawrna McLucas, Shenita Martin and Breanna Alston, who finished a full two seconds ahead of second-place Wingate with a time of 46.36 seconds.
Stephanie Chapman picked up the victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:34.39 while Maria Stickley and Kayla Schneider finished first and second in the 1,500-meter run.
Molly Vaughn grabbed the 100-meter hurdle title with a time of 15.01 seconds while Kristen Campbell blazed past her competition in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.14 seconds.
Breahna Morrison won the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.31 seconds, the third-best time in ASU history, and also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.96 seconds.
Martin and Helena Shields finished first and second in the 400-meter hurdles to round out the top finishes for the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend at the 2012 SoCon Outdoor Championships in Cullowhee, N.C. where the men will attempt to win their third-straight outdoor title and the women attempt to win their second in a row.
Chattanooga's Vasquez claimed 800m title at Tennessee
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Josh Vasquez claimed the men’s 800 meter title and led the men’s 4x400 meter relay team to a top time at the Tennessee State Blue Moon Classic Saturday in Nashville.
Vasquez too first in the men’s 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.66, just .10 seconds ahead of Morehouse’s Karlton Mitchell. Teammate John Gilpin placed eighth in the event with a season-best time of 1:59.45 and freshman Patrick O’Brien was 13th in his first 800 of the season with a time of 2:04.36.
The men’s 4x400 meter relay team, anchored by Vasquez, picked up first in the event with a time of 3:16.58, just off the school record time by less than two seconds. Freshman Dezerick Frazier led off the event followed by sophomore Blake Olson and freshman Drew Harris running the third leg of the race.
Frazier took second in the men’s 400m dash with a time of 49.45, just .20 seconds off the top place pace set by Tennessee State’s Michael Johnson running unattached. Harris ran the event in a time of 52.67 and freshman Drew Austell (Eads, Tenn.) just behind with a time of 55.04.
Newcomer Samantha Pulido took second in the 400 meter Hurdles with a PR time of 1:07.68. Senior Ashley Hall posted a season-best time of 1:10.93 and was third in the race. Freshman Taylor Pannell finished second in the women’s High jump with a height of 1.52 meters (4’-11.75”).
Sophomore Nathan Wanuch placed second in the men’s 1500 meter run with a season-best time of 4:02.41. Classmate Mark Cole finished just behind Wanuch in third place with a time of 4:05.43. O’Brien, running in his second race of the day, placed ninth with a time of 4:19.75.
Olson placed fourth in the men’s 400 meter Hurdles with a time of 57.31 and freshman Keeley Stewart placed fourth in the women’s 1500 meter run with a time of 5:00.74 with a fourth place finish.
In the women’s 400 meter dash, sophomore Gabby Cader ran a season-best time 59.76. Freshman Ambria Reese clocked her season-best time in the 800 meter at 2:26.23 followed by fellow freshman Jessica Philpott at 2:30.53.
The Mocs have no time to rest as they gear up for the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Western Carolina at the Catamount Athletic Complex. The events begin Saturday, April 21 and run through Sunday evening concluding with the awards ceremonies.
