HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - UNCG leads after the first round of the 2012 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Moss Creek Golf Club.

The Spartans fired a score of 306 (+18) in the opening round, placing a four-stroke cushion between themselves and Elon who carded a score of 310 (+22). Furman is one stroke behind the Phoenix at 311 (+23).

UNCG senior Begona Sarabia, Elon junior Martyna Mierzwa and Furman junior Alexa Rancourt were the low individuals on the first day, carding identical 2-over-par 74s.

College of Charleston senior Leigh Whitaker, Elon senior Lauren Lebak and UNCG freshman Fanny Cnops shot a 75 (+3) to finish just behind the leaders, tied for fifth.

Chattanooga, which claimed the 2011 SoCon title, was paced by both Maria Juliana Loza and Jordan Britt whom shot a 77 (+5) to finish tied for seventh.

College of Charleston sits in fourth place after shooting 314 and is closely followed by Western Carolina (315), Samford (317) and Chattanooga (317).

Rounding out the team leaderboard was Wofford (319), Appalachian State (329) and The Citadel (351).

Round two of the championship will begin Monday morning at 8 a.m. ET with results updated every three holes at www.golfstatresults.com. The 54-hole championship will conclude on Tuesday.
