Wofford 4, Furman 3
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team earned four wins in singles play to take a 4-3 win at Furman Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 6-11 overall and 5-5 in SoCon action. The Paladins fall to 8-14-1 overall and 5-4-1 in league play.
The match kicked off with doubles play, where the pairing of Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith defeated Jacob Behal and Watson George (8-2) at the No. 3 position, yet the Paladins took the remaining two matches to claim the doubles point.
Furman took a 2-0 advantage at the onset of doubles play as Tinus Van Wyk fell to Andrew Mellow (6-1, 6-3) at the No. 1 position. Wofford earned the next point as Rob Galloway downed Jacob Behal (6-3, 6-1) at the No. 4 position, yet Furman's Alex Christ earned the next win at the No. 2 spot over Drew Superstein (6-3, 7-6(6)) to give the Paladins a 3-1 lead.
The Terriers stormed back, as Walker Heffron defeated Robbie Aru (6-4, 7-5) at the No. 5 position, and Jackson Keith defeated Joel Cook (6-1, 1-, 7-6(2)) at the No. 3 position to tie the match at 3-3.
The match at the No. 6 position between Tom Wood and Tyler Droll went into a third set, with Wood prevailing in a tiebreaker to decide the third set (6-4, 5-7, 7-6(6)) to give Wofford the overall match win.
Campbell 4, UNCG 3
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - UNCG's men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 4-3 loss at Campbell on Saturday. The Camels clinched the match in a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.
UNCG (9-12) led 3-2 but saw the Camels (10-10) rally for the victory. With the match tied at 3, Campbell clinched the win with Ondrej Kralik's 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Jimmy Roueche at the bottom of the lineup.
The Camels won the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. Steven Billington and August Iwdal got things going with an 8-5 win over Roueche and Cameron Smith at No. 3, and David Clavera and Fernando Guillen clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Randy Phillips and Chanon Varapongsittikul at No. 2.
Ahmet Sarioglu and Orcun Seyrek avoided the sweep at No. 1, downing Josep Baro and Adrien Rossignon, 8-7 (9-7).
In singles play, Billington made it a 2-0 advantage with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Smith at No. 5. Varapongsittikul got the Spartans on the board at No. 3, beating Clavera by a 6-2, 6-1 score.
Seyrek tied the match at No. 1, downing Rossignon by a 6-4, 6-2 count. The win was Seyrek's 19th of the season, meaning he needs just one more for his fourth straight 20-win campaign.
Phillips gave UNCG its only lead of the day at No. 4, dropping Baro 7-6 (7-4), 6-3. Guillen would tie the match, however, defeating Sarioglu at No. 2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1, 6-2 to keep the Camels alive.
The match was the Spartans' sixth straight to end in a 4-3 score. UNCG dropped consecutive matches for the first time since mid-February.
East Carolina 4, Elon 3
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Elon University men's tennis team dropped its regular season finale today, April 14, as the Phoenix fell 4-3 to the East Carolina Pirates in Greenville, N.C.
Elon (8-14) fell behind, 1-0, to the Pirates early after dropping two out of three doubles matches. At number one, Cameron Silverman and Stefan Fortmann gave Elon its lone victory, an 8-5 win over East Carolina's Joran Vliegen and Niels Cleeren.
Fortmann improved to 16-7 on the year after handing Cleeren a 6-0, 6-3 setback at number two singles. Fortmann has won four straight.
Jordan Kaufman was impressive for the Phoenix at number three singles, as the rookie posted a 6-4, 7-5 result over the Pirates' Nicolas Soriano. Kaufman finishes the regular season with a 12-11 record in singles play.
Juan Madrid battled tough for the maroon and gold at number five singles against ECU's Damien Brenard. Madrid handed Brenard a 6-4 setback in the first set, but fell 6-2 in the second to force a decisive third set. The two battled back and forth, but Madrid came out on top in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3), to give Elon the point.
