College of Charleston 4, Furman 3
GREENVILLE, S.C. - College of Charleston senior Caroline Newman defeated Paladin sophomore Katherine Oudin, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3) at number three singles to clinch a 4-3 victory over Furman Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. With the win, the Cougars gained control of second place in the Southern Conference standings.
Furman jumped out to an early lead, winning two out of three doubles matches to earn the match's first point. Freshman Alex Moreno-Kaste and junior Michele Stanford combined to defeat Irene Viana and Samantha Maddox, 8-5, in the top match, but the Cougars answered, as Kelly Kambourelis and Jenny Falcone topped Oudin and junior Lauren Kline, 8-5, in the second doubles match. In the decisive third-seeded contest, sophomore Margaret Boyette and freshman Kelly Sullivan survived a close match-up, defeating Christin Newman and Katie Lee, 9-7, to clinch the point.
College of Charleston quickly gained control in singles, winning the first set in four of six matches. Falcone posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Moreno-Kaste at number five, then Kambourelis notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Stanford in the second singles match, giving the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. Boyette tied the match at 2-apiece after defeating Maddox, 6-4, 6-2, at number four singles.
Newman bested Kline, 6-2, 6-3, in the top singles match to push CofC ahead 3-2, before the teams split sets at number three and number six singles. Paladin sophomore Amanda Murray held on for a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (7-2) win over Lee at number three singles to tie the match, setting up the decisive third-seeded match-up.
Davidson 5, Wofford 2
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Davidson Wednesday evening at the Reeves Tennis Center.
The Terriers drop to 5-14 overall and 1-8 in SoCon play following the loss. The Wildcats improve to 5-17 on the year and 2-7 in league action.
The match kicked off with doubles play, where the pairing of Othilia Lindqvist and Samantha Sullivan defeated Elise Held and Frizzi Bschorer (8-0) at the No. 3 position, yet Davidson took the remaining two matches to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, the Wildcats earned early victories at the No. 6, No. 5 and No. 2 positions to seal the overall match victory. At the No. 1 position, Sarah Evans defeated Stephani Synn (4-6, 5-4, default), and in what was a marathon match, Audrey Coventry prevailed over Katharine Dicconson (7-6(3), 6-7(5), 10-6) at the No. 3 position.
Chattanooga 7, Lee University 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team breezed through a 7-0 sweep of Lee University on Senior Day at the UTC Tennis Courts this afternoon. The Lady Mocs improved to 15-4 overall and only dropped nine games in nine matches. The Flames, ranked No. 17 in the most recent NAIA Top-25, fall to 8-5 on the year.
Chattanooga has now won four-straight matches and its 15 wins are the most for the program since going 17-6 in 1999. Junior Jenna Nurik and freshman Claire Mulyadi did not lose a game today, posting shutouts in singles and doubles. They started the afternoon teaming at No. 2 doubles for an 8-0 win over Tarah Garner and Annie Sandberg.
Senior Brianna Wishing and freshman Kaylene Chadwell secured the doubles point with an 8-0 win over Christy North and Stephanie Todd at No. 3. Seniors Emily Hangstefer and Shaina Singh improved to 6-0 as a pair with an 8-3 win over Kelsey Gray and Tonya Walters at No. 1.
UTC did not lose a game in any of the second sets in singles action. Nurik was first off the court with her (6-0, 6-0) win over Walters at No. 1. Nurik improved to 22-8 overall and 14-5 at No. 1, setting a new career-high for wins in a season. Mulyadi won her third-straight to improve to 9-6 with a (6-0, 6-0) victory over Sandberg at No. 4.
Chadwell clinched the team win with a (6-1, 6-0) win over Gray at No. 2. Chadwell improves to 19-9 with her seventh-straight singles win. Hangstefer won her third straight with a (6-1, 6-0) victory over Garner at No. 3. She has a career-high 18 wins against six losses.
Senior Charlotte Bossy scored a (6-1, 6-0) win over Todd at No. 5. The win improved Bossy's singles record to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in dual matches. Chattanooga is 7-0 when Bossy is in the singles lineup.
Singh was originally penciled in the singles lineup, but tweaked her back during warm-ups. After posting a doubles win, she was pulled from singles action and replaced by Wishing. This allowed Wishing to get some revenge against Lee's Jodie Rice who had beaten her in the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic in October. Wishing improved to 4-2 in singles this season with a (6-3, 6-0) win.
Samford 6, Troy 1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University women's tennis team extended its winning streak to four-consecutive matches Wednesday as the Bulldogs earned a decisive 6-1 non-conference triumph against the Troy Trojans in an in-state rivalry contest held at the Samford Tennis Center.
With Wednesday's win, Samford (14-5) closed out its regular-season schedule with an unblemished 6-0 record against regional opponents. The Bulldogs, who are members of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Southern Region, tallied dual-match victories this year over Louisiana-Lafayette 6-1, Jacksonville State 7-0, South Alabama 4-0, Southern Miss 7-0, UAB 7-0 and Troy (10-7), 6-1.
Samford's victory against the Trojans on Wednesday also marked its fourth-straight win, which also featured triumphs over Wofford 5-1, Davidson 6-1 and Appalachian State 4-3.
The Bulldogs improved to 10-3 at home this season by winning the all-important doubles point and then received quick straight-set victories in singles play from Madelie Janse Van Rensburg, Stephanie N'tcha, Rebecca Kirven, Lindsey Mallory and Jessica Diamond. With its five wins in singles play, Samford secured the lopsided 6-1 team victory.
In Wednesday's doubles competition, the Bulldogs were victorious on courts Nos. 1 and 2. Samford's tandem comprised of Lewis and Lindsey Mallory knocked off the nation's 89th-ranked duo of Lyubov Dorofeeva and Karoline Grymel, 9-7, in the No. 1 doubles contest. The win was the Bulldogs' first doubles triumph against a ranked opponent this season as Lewis and Mallory improved to 15-4 in 2012.
On court No. 2, Samford's pairing of Kirven and Janse Van Rensburg held off Troy's feisty combination of Gabrielle Veiga and Samya El Hsissen, 8-6. With the victory, the Bulldogs' tandem earned their seventh-straight win and improved to 13-5 on the season.
Samford's Kirven also extended her winning streak to four-consecutive matches in singles play Wednesday as she tallied a 6-2, 6-3 triumph on court No. 4. The Bulldogs' senior from Windermere, Fla., moved her record on the season to 11-6 with the victory.
N'tcha, Samford's true freshman from Abomey-Calavi, Benin, notched her third-straight win Wednesday as she rolled to a 6-4, 6-0 triumph on court No. 4. She also improved her dual-match record to 11-6 with the victory.
The Bulldogs' Janse Van Rensburg and Diamond both won by retirement against their Troy counterparts, while Lindsey Mallory knocked off the Trojans' El Hsissen on court No. 5, 6-3, 6-0. With her straight-set win, Samford's native of Louisville, Ky., moved her record this season to 12-5.
