SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG’s Paul Chelimo and Western Carolina’s Jamie Van Pelt have been named the Southern Conference’s Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week for meets over last weekend. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Chelimo posted the second best 5000m time in the NCAA Friday evening at the Stanford Invite. The sophomore’s time of 13:32 set a new UNCG school record.
The Eldoret, Kenya native has the top time in the SoCon by 40 seconds and currently holds the best time in the East Region.
Van Pelt recorded two personal records over the weekend at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic. The senior from Tampa, Fla., had a 49.00m (160’ 9”) mark in the discus and a 55.33m (181’ 6”) mark in the hammer throw.
The Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship will be held in Cullowhee, N.C. on April 21-22.
