College of Charleston 4, UNCG 3
GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG's men's tennis team gave Southern Conference leader College of Charleston all it could handle Sunday, but the Cougars remained perfect in league play with a 4-3 win over the Spartans at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
UNCG (8-10, 5-3 SoCon) rallied to win three singles matches after dropping the doubles point, and the match came down to No. 3 singles when the teams found themselves knotted at three.
The Spartans' Chanon Varapongsittikul won his first set 6-4, but the Cougars' Kyle Parker won the second set by the same score to send the bout to a third set to settle the match. Parker outlasted Varapongsittikul 6-3 in the third set to push CofC's record to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the SoCon.
UNCG had staged a nice rally in singles to tie the match. The Spartans trailed 2-0 after Alon Faiman topped Jimmy Roueche 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles, but Orcun Seyrek picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mickael Trintignac at No. 1 to get UNCG on the board.
Crescente Lesser finished off Randy Phillips at No. 4 by a 7-5, 6-2 count to put the Cougars on the brink of the win, but Cameron Smith defeated Stephen Hardy 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 to keep the Spartans alive.
Ahmet Sarioglu then pulled UNCG level, wrapping up his 6-4, 6-3 win over Tom Delme at No. 2 to make it 3-all before Parker clinched the match at No. 3.
The Cougars won the crucial doubles point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. Hardy and Billy Kenny got things going with an 8-4 win over Roueche and Smith at No. 3, and Parker and Trintignac clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Sarioglu and Seyrek at No. 1.
UNCG avoided the sweep at No. 2, where Phillips and Varapongsittikul won for the eighth time in their last nine tries with an 8-6 victory over Delme and Faiman.
Elon 6, Wofford 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Elon men's tennis team won the doubles point and secured victories in five of the six singles matches to earn a 6-1 win over the host Wofford Terriers in Southern Conference men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon.
Rookies Jordan Kaufman and Dan Sablik provided a spark in doubles to get Elon (8-11, 5-3) started on the right foot. After Elon and Wofford split matches on courts one and two, Kaufman and Sablik paired together for only the second time this dual season and fought out a 9-8 (4) win over Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith to clinch the doubles point for the Phoenix.
Sophomore Cameron Silverman and freshman Stefan Fortmann teamed for the second straight match at the top doubles position due to an injury to Eric Turner. The duo cruised to an 8-1 win against Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway to help Elon take the early lead.
In singles, Fortmann rebounded after a loss yesterday, dropping only three games in a 6-2, 6-1 decision against Drew Superstein at number two. Andrew Prince posted the same score against Galloway on court four to give Elon a 3-0 advantage.
After Wofford picked up a point with a win at number five, Silverman closed the door on the Terriers and defended his unbeaten league record with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Van Wyk. The reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year is 16-2 against league foes in his two seasons.
Elon's Carlos Arboleda knocked off Tom Wood, 6-4, 6-4, on court six and Kaufman won his third straight match with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) decision over Keith at number three. Kaufman is now 7-1 in SoCon matches.
Davidson 4, Chattanooga 3
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Davidson men's tennis team capped off a busy week, and their final road match, with a strong 4-3 win at Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon in Southern Conference play at Baylor School Courts.
Playing its third match of the week, the Wildcats (7-11, 3-5 SoCon) regrouped after dropping the doubles point to take four of the six singles matches to halt a three-match skid. The road win was their only one this year. Davidson had also played Furman and Samford during the week.
Chattanooga fell to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in SoCon play.
The No. 1 duo of Calum Gee and Joe Schafer won their 10th match together with an 8-4 triumph, but the Mocs were able to take 8-6 and 8-4 decisions at the other two spots for the team point.
Gee led the way in singles play as the senior, playing his fourth three-set match in the past five matches, tallied a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win at No. 4. It was his third three-set win of the season as he improved to 7-11 and 5-3 in SoCon play.
Freshman Nicky Kunz also went to a three-setter at No. 3, coming out victorious. The freshman took the first set, 6-1, but fell 6-2 in set two, to force the last set. Kunz then went the distance, prevailing 7-1 in a tie-breaker to earn his 11th win of the year. Of those 11 wins, five have come in three-set matches.
Robert Lightbourn and Connor Evins sealed up the win for the Wildcats with victorious at No. 5 and 6 singles positions, respectively. Lightbourn got back to his winning ways after dropping his previous two with a solid 6-4, 6-4 decision over Jackson Tresnan. The sophomore registered his ninth win of the year, all coming at No. 5.
Fellow classmate Evins won his eighth match in the past 10 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Stephan Crofford. He moved one win away from becoming the second Wildcat to reach 10 wins this year and ran his league mark to 6-2.
