ASU Takes Title; Pellegrini Wins Event for Bulldogs

Pellegrini Captures Hilton Head Invitational, Dogs Finish Second

Bluffton, S.C. - Sophomore Erica Pellegrini's round of 76 led her to the first individual crown in program history and in the process guided The Citadel to a second place showing at the Hilton Head Invitational on Sunday.

Pellegrini finished one shot ahead of Appalachian State tandem Rumbi Masamvo and Lauren Smith, who were deadlocked at 77. The Chadd's Ford, Pa., native was the only Bulldog to post a round in the 70s, anchoring a Citadel team that posted a score of 342, 16 shots off the pace set by the Mountaineers.

Citadel rookie Devin Lowe (87) finished in a tie for fourth alongside Yue Xu of Appalachian State. Meanwhile, fellow freshman Kellie Anderson carded an 89 to place herself in a tie for seventh place.

Bulldog teammates Bree Baumgarter and TaKima Butler created a four-way tie for ninth place with a pair of 90s.

Senior Alanna-Jean Keith placed 15th after shooting a round of 93.

Tournament host, Dayton, placed third with a team score of 360. Grace Nikolai paced the Flyers with an individual score of 88.

Next up on the tournament docket will be a stop in Southport, N.C., for the Spider Invitational, hosted by the University of Richmond, on March 10th.

 ASU Women's Golf Bests The Citadel and Dayton

BLUFFTON, S.C. - Rumbidzai Masamvu and Lauren Smith each carded a 77 (+5) to lead Appalachian State University women's golf to a win over Southern Conference rival The Citadel and host Dayton in Sunday's Dayton/Hilton Head Invitational.

The Mountaineers carded a 326 (+38) on the challenging Belfair Club West course in the small three-team competition. The Citadel placed second at 343 (+55) and the Flyers rounded out the field at 360 (+72). The Citadel's Erica Pellegrini took home the individual title at 76 (+4).

Mimi Burke placed fourth with an 85 (+13), just two strokes ahead of teammate Yue Xu, who shot an 87 (+15) to tie in fifth place.

Competing as an individual, Samantha Bonham tied for 13th with a 92 (+20), while Brittany Zachrich finished 16th with a 94 (+22).

It was the squad's second tri-match of the season, as ASU placed second at Wofford in late February.

Appalachian opens its Spring Break schedule on March 10-11 at Richmond's Spider at St. James tournament in Southport, N.C.
