After a leadoff single by Lauren Oldham to start the bottom of the third, Sam Bedore relieved Erika Szymanski in the circle for the Rams. A ground out by Hill advanced Oldham to second before a double to left field by Watson pushed her across the plate to cut the deficit to two, 4-2.

Rhode Island added another run to the board in the fourth by Kelly. She singled to start the inning, stole second and then advanced to third on an error by Elon catcher Hill. A wild pitch then scored the unearned run to make the score 5-2, in favor of the Rams.

A single and walk started the top of the fifth for URI and then caused Elon head coach Kathy Bocock to make another pitching change for the Phoenix, bringing in Kari Pervell. After a bases-loaded single by Kelly to score Allison Hartzell from third, Coker hit a grand slam to clear the bases and put the Rams up by eight, 10-2.

The Phoenix was not able to respond in the bottom of the fifth and dropped just its third game of the season.

The win went to URI’s Bedore (1-2), who pitched three innings in relief, giving up only one hit and striking out four. Elon’s C. O’Shea (2-1) took her first loss of the season after 2.2 innings of work and four runs.

No.15 Arizona 5, College of Charleston 0
TUCSON, Ariz. - The College of Charleston softball team suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 15 Arizona in front of 2,555 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium in the final game of a three-game weekend set on Sunday afternoon.

Kristy Giragosian continued to get productive at bats for the Cougars and was 1-for-3 on the day at the plate and made a few nice catches and strong throws in right field.

The Arizona bats went to work in the bottom of the first when Chelsea Suitos legged out and infield single and got to third on a throwing error on the play. The Wildcats then drew a walk and executed a double steal for one run and Jessica Spigner singled to score another. After Spigner's pinch runner was caught stealing by catcher Mackenzie Maples, Chelsea Goodacre hit a high fly ball which carried to right center and snuck out of the yard to make it 3-0.

The Cougars appeared to have plated their first run of the series in the second when Giragosian cracked her third hit of the weekend and Maples drew a walk to put the Cougars in a threatening position.  Hope Klicker executed the sacrifice bunt to move the runners up and then Allison Pedigo  sent a would-be sacrifice fly deep to center which allowed Giragosian to tag and score. Arizona appealed the play, however, and Giragosian was called out for leaving third before the ball was caught and run was taken off the board and the inning ended.

The run would have snapped a 29-inning scoreless streak dating back to Feb. 18 for Wildcat starting pitcher Kenzie Fowler.

The Wildcats stuck another run on the board in the fourth with a two-out single, stolen base and RBI single from Hallie Wilson.

Relieving pitcher Jen Rosene silenced the Wildcats through the middle three innings with the help of sound defense from the Cougars.

The Wildcats were good for one more run in the sixth frame by way of three seeing-eye singles which weren't hit particularly well but found ways to elude the Cougar defense.

The prestigious Arizona faithful packed Hillenbrand Stadium with a combined attendance of 7,550 over the weekend which provided for a great softball environment.

After a late flight home on Monday, the Cougars will have to quickly regroup before hosting NC State in a doubleheader at Patriots Point on Wednesday, March 7 starting at 2 p.m.

After a sacrifice and an error, pinch-runner Kiah Ruffin came in on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5. Two batters later, Tatiana Alcala came in on another wild pitch to put UNCG ahead to stay.

Navarette (1-5) allowed just two hits and five base-runners the rest of the way to nail down her first win. All told, she allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, on seven hits and four walks in the complete game. She struck out five.

Jessica Cross worked 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Owls, retiring 10 straight after Alcala came in with the go-ahead run. Monica Vickery (0-1) took the loss for KSU, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings.

UNCG pitcher Cory Mattson was nearly as good to that point, allowing just three hits in the first four innings. After allowing a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, Mattson retired the next 10 batters in order before surrendering a solo home run to Kathryn Eberlin with two outs in the fourth.

After Alcala broke up the no-no in the top of the fifth, Winthrop doubled its advantage in the bottom half. Alex White reached on an infield single to lead off the inning, and Kelly Blea’s single knocked her in to make it 2-0.

UNCG had just three base-runners in the contest. Aubrey Baldwin reached on an error in the top of the first inning, and Toni MacReynolds drew a leadoff walk in the third. Alcala ended up on third after a sacrifice and a grounder in the fifth, but Becker got a strikeout to keep the shutout intact. She retired the final nine batters of the game in order.

Mattson (3-4) took the loss despite a solid outing in which she surrendered just two runs on just five hits and a walk. She struck out five.

Becker struck out six and walked one.

UNCG returns to action Thursday for a doubleheader at coach Jennifer Herzig’s alma mater, Charlotte. Game one is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
