Saturday's Women's Tennis Roundup

College of Charleston 7, Jacksonville State 0

ANNISTON, Ala. - The College of Charleston women's tennis team claimed a 7-0 shutout of Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon at the Golden Springs Community Center.

The Cougars (4-3) swept the doubles point for the first time this season behind a pair of 8-1 victories by the No. 1 and No. 2 combinations of sophomore Jamie Harrell and junior Irene Viana and freshman Samantha Maddox and freshman Jenny Falcone.

Freshman Grace Baker and junior Olivia McMillan also contributed with an 8-5 win over JSU's Kelly Tomlin and Aleksandra Cmilijic at No. 3 doubles.

CofC would later hand the Gamecocks (3-5) a sweep in singles, all in straight sets. Maddox defeated JSU's top player Raisa Guasti, 6-4, 7-5, at the No. 1 line followed by Falcone, who allowed one game to Raphaela Lima, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 2. Meanwhile, Baker picked up her first career singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Kelly Tomlin at No. 6.

"We had a great time today," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "We want to thank Jacksonville State for their incredible hospitality. Coach (Steve) Bailey is one of the classiest coaches in the country. Our players adjusted well today against the defending Missouri Valley Conference champions. It was good to get a victory in our first match away outdoors. I am also really proud of Grace Baker for picking up her first collegiate dual-match victory."

The Cougars will continue their extensive spring break road trip next at Tulane on Tuesday, March 6 at 2 p.m. (ET) in New Orleans, La.

Chattanooga 6, UT-Martin 1

MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team improved to 7-1 on the year with a 6-1 win at UT Martin today.  The Lady Mocs dropped the doubles point for the first time this season, but stormed back in singles play for the win.

Chattanooga is off to its best start since 1991, and its doubles play had been one of the driving forces.  UTC took the first match when sophomore Alexa Flynn and freshman Kaylene Chadwell won their fourth straight since taking over the No. 1 position.  Chattanooga dropped the other two to fall behind 1-0.

Freshman Claire Mulyadi quickly tied the match with her (6-3, 6-3) win over Alice Laing at No. 6.  Mulyadi is now 4-0 since entering the lineup after enrolling at UTC in January.

UTC kept rolling with straight-set wins by senior Emily Hangstefer at No. 4, Chadwell at No. 3 and junior Jenna Nurik at No. 1 .  Nurik improves to 7-1 in the top spot and has a team-high 15-5 overall mark.  Hangstefer is just as impressive, sitting 5-2 at No. 4 and 12-3 overall.

Senior Shaina Singh fought back after losing her first set.  She won in three at No. 5, improving to 6-1 in that spot and 13-6 overall.  Flynn held on in a three-setter at No. 2 to complete the singles sweep.

Chattanooga returns home to host Mercer at the UTC Tennis Courts on Tuesday, March 6.  Match time is set for 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.) and a link for live scoring will be available on GoMocs.com.
