ATLANTA – A walk-off home run by Erin O’Shea in the bottom of the eighth put the Elon softball team past Southeastern Louisiana, 7-5, today, March 3, in the Buzz Classic. The Phoenix is on a five-game winning streak and is now 10-2 on the season, while the Lady Lions fall to 3-14.

Karen Berna (2-0) earned the win for Elon after pitching 3.2 innings and giving up one run off three hits. The loss went to Kenna Terry (1-7), who gave up three runs in 2.2 innings.

Danielle Lafferty went 2-for-3 at the plate, while E. O’Shea’s one hit recorded her three RBI. Tomeka Watson scored three of Elon’s runs in the game with Camille Hill scoring another two.

Elon put one run on the board in the bottom of the first off a sacrifice fly by Carleigh Nester. With one out, Watson drew a walk, stole second and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Nester pushed Watson across the plate with the sacrifice to left field to put the Phoenix up 1-0.

The Lady Lions evened the score in the top of the third with a home run to right field by Meghan Gomez. With runners on first and second and one out, E. O’Shea replaced Elon starter Kari Pervell in the circle. E. O’Shea then got the Phoenix out of the inning by getting the runner out at second and the final batter to fly out to left field.

Southeastern jumped ahead, 4-1, in the fourth with three runs off four hits. A double to right field by Megan McCollum scored Katie Doyle from second, a pinch runner for Katie Matthews who was walked to start the inning. With one out and one on, Gomez hit another home run, this time to left field, to add two more runs to the board.

The Phoenix answered in the bottom of the inning, adding three more runs to tie the game. Sarah Little reached on an error by the Lady Lions’ second baseman and then Grace Eng, a pinch runner for Little, advanced to third on a double down the right field line by Lauren Oldham. Kati Morse then replaced Honeycutt at pitcher with two runners on and only one out. Eng scored and Oldham advanced to third after an illegal pitch by Morse that put Hill on base. Oldham was caught stealing home to record the second out but Hill reached second and then advanced again after another illegal pitch. With a full count and two outs, Watson hit a homer to right field for two runs that tied the game at four-all.

In extra innings, Trish Bliss was placed on second for Southeastern to start the eighth. She scored on an error by Phoenix third baseman Aly Quintana that gave the Lady Lions the slight 5-4 edge.

Hill was placed on second to start the bottom of the eighth, while Watson reached on an error. After Nester popped up on a bunt, E. O’Shea sent the ball over the fence in centerfield for a three-run walk-off home run that ended the game in favor of the Phoenix, 7-5.

Elon is scheduled to play Rhode Island at 10 a.m. tomorrow, March 4, and then Georgia Tech at noon in Woodstock, Ga. 

Winthrop 1, Furman 0

Kennesaw, Ga. – Winthrop pitchers Natalie Becker and Chelsey Schoenfeldt combined to limit Furman to just three hits as the Eagles shutout the Paladins, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park on the Kennesaw State University campus.

Originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex, Saturday’s game was moved to Kennesaw when day two of the Buzz Classic was shuffled around due to heavy rains overnight.

Becker worked around five walks and two hits in 3.1 innings of work while Schoenfeldt (3-4) earned the victory after limiting the Paladins to a single hit in 3.2 innings in the circle.

Furman (6-8), which stranded nine runners on the day, loaded the bases in the first before Becker struck out Hannah Pace to end the inning.  In the bottom of the first, Winthrop (6-9) used a leadoff single followed by a pair of walks to load the bases with no outs.  Schoenfeldt put the Eagles on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Megan Chapman, but Furman starter Hannah Bradley induced a pop up and ground ball to shortstop to hold Winthrop to one run.

The Paladins put runners at second and third with two outs in the third inning only to see Lauren Collier retired on a soft liner to short.  Furman loaded the bases the following inning with one out, but Winthrop erased the lead runner at the plate on Nikki Legg’s grounder to second and Taylor Jenkins line drive down the first base line was speared by the Eagles’ Kathryn Ebrlin to keep the Paladins scoreless.

Bradley, who allowed one run on three hits in three innings of work, suffered the loss to slip to 1-3.  Freshmen Shelby Parker and Lakyn Shull combined to work three innings of scoreless relief.

Jenkins went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Paladins at the plate.  Chapman collected two hits for Winthrop while scoring the game’s only run.

The Paladins conclude play in the Buzz Classic on Sunday when they face Georgia State at noon and Jacksonville State at 2 p.m.  Both games are scheduled to be played at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex.

No. 15 Arizona 8, College of Charleston 0

TUCSON, Ariz. - The College of Charleston softball team was downed, 8-0, by No. 15 Arizona in the second of a three game set in front of 2,588 fans at Hillenbrand Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The teams conclude the series on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

The hard-hitting Wildcats impressed with 11 hits on the afternoon. Shelby Babcock went the distance in the circle for Arizona and recorded a five-inning no hitter. The no hitter was the 87th in Arizona's program history.

The Wildcats plated their first run in the bottom of the first after a leadoff walk drawn by Hallie Wilson and Bridgette Del Ponte doubled to the fence in left center to score the runner from first.

With an almost identical process, the Wildcats crossed a second run in the third with the only difference being a single instead of a walk and Del Ponte doubling to virtually the same spot. An infield single later, Shelby Pendley homered to dead center to push the score to 5-0.

Arizona plated a sixth in the following inning after two speedsters legged out infield singles and Del Ponte doubled once again - this time to right center - to make the score 6-0.

The Wildcats crossed two more in the fifth to enforce the eight-run rule and conclude the game. They did so by way of a Cougar fielding error and walk backed up by two straight long singles.

Freshman Hope Klicker was the pitcher of record for the Cougars and put down three Wildcats on strikes in four innings.

Following Sunday's season finale, the Cougars will head back east to host NC State in a doubleheader at Patriots Point on Wednesday, March 7 starting at 2 p.m.

UNCG 9, Morehead State 3

WOODSTOCK, Ga. – UNCG pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four errors to pick up a 9-3 win over Morehead State at the Buzz Classic on Saturday.

The Spartans (4-10) jumped all over the Eagles (4-7), scoring in each of the first five innings.

Morehead State took a 1-0 lead on Stephanie Etter’s RBI single in the first inning, but UNCG answered with a pair in the bottom half. Aisha Figueroa led off with a single and moved to third on an error in the outfield, and Aubrey Baldwin knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to tie the contest. One out later, Eileen Horsmon and Katelyn Bedwell hit back-to-back doubles to put UNCG on top for for.

The Spartans added a run on the second on Figueroa’s RBI single and made it 4-1 on Heather Robb’s RBI single in the third inning.

MSU got a run back on Samm Sparks’ bases-loaded sac fly in the fourth, but UNCG answered with two in the bottom half on Baldwin’s RBI single and a Horsmon sac fly.

The Spartans put the game out of reach in the fifth, scoring three runs on a wild play. With the bases loaded, Figueroa reached on a fielder’s choice that knocked in Robb, but an error on the play allowed Toni MacReynolds and Tatiana Alcala to score, as well.

Morehead State scored its final run on Sparks’ RBI single in the sixth but would get no closer.

UNCG starter Cory Mattson evened her record at 3-3, allowing three runs on 12 hits and three walks in the complete-game effort. She struck out four.

The Eagles sent four pitchers into the circle, with starter Jami Whitcomb absorbing the loss to fall to 3-3. She was tagged for three runs on five hits in two innings of work.

Figueroa and Horsmon had two hits each to pace UNCG at the dish, while six other Spartans recorded hits. Figueroa and Baldwin had two RBI each.

Amber Riddle, Adrena Anderson, Elizabeth Wagner and Kayla Brill had two hits each for Morehead State.

The Sunday schedule for the Buzz Classic has been rearranged to make up some of the games lost Saturday. The Spartans will pick up a game at Kennesaw State at 10 a.m., while their contest against Winthrop, originally slated for 10, will now be played at 2 p.m. at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex in Woodstock.

Western Carolina 6, Jacksonville State 4

KENNESAW, Ga. – Western Carolina softball (7-9) defeated Jacksonville State (3-11) 6-4 Saturday, at Bailey Park, in a rain-shortened second day of the Buzz Classic.

Freshman hurler Jordan Garrett picked up her seconds straight victory (5-4), in the Buzz Classic, with another solid performance. She bent but didn’t break turning in a gutsy performance, in which she gave up 12 hits, but only allowed four runs. Garrett was backed up by a stellar performance defensively, by the Catamounts, who didn’t yield and error in the game.

Offensively, Western Carolina may have only scattered four hits in the game, against Jacksonville State, but they were timely hits. 

Both teams got on the board right off the bat. Jacksonville State opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Not to be outdone, Western Carolina answered with a two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. The inning opened with back-to-back walks given to Jordan Fulton and Amelia Griffin. A single by Erin Foster, to left center loaded the bases with Catamounts. With one out, Kelly Braman hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Fulton. A fielding error by Jacksonville State afforded Griffin the chance to score the second run of the inning for Western Carolina.

The Catamounts took the lead in the bottom of the third inning, a lead Western Carolina would not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Griffin opened the inning with a single and scored on an RBI double by Shemekia Scotton, giving WCU a 3-2 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, Western Carolina had a huge three-run output to all but put the game away. Again, the inning began with Jacksonville State giving walks this time three straight to Catamounts’ Heather Chastain, Megan Crowe and Jordan Fulton. Griffin hit a sacrifice fly allowing pinch runner Alex Church, who came in for Chastain to score. Foster followed with a two RBI triple, her third triple of the season, scoring Crowe and Fulton.

Jacksonville State would attempt a comeback, including a homerun in the firth inning and a run in the seventh, but Western Carolina kept them at bay.

Foster led Western Carolina going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a triple.

Western Carolina concludes action in the Buzz Classic at 2 p.m. Sunday facing Alabama State. 

Appalachian State 9, NC Central 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - A six-run sixth-inning gave Appalachian State University softball a 9-1 victory over N.C. Central Saturday night at Cyrill Stadium.

The Mountaineers (8-6) have beaten the Eagles (1-13) for the third-time this season and are now 7-0 all-time. Appalachian tallied five players with two hits and three players with at least two RBIs.

Caroline Williams kept the Eagles' hitters off balance all night with five strikeouts and only allowing four hits, one run and a walk in her first victory as a Mountaineer.

Megan Rembielak led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and stole a pair of bases to get to third.  Freshman Sarah Warnock blasted one to right field to score Rembielak on sacrifice fly and give Appalachian a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth frame, senior Michelle Gorzelle started the inning with a picture perfect bunt single.  Freshman Dani Heichen ripped a single through the right side, and would score along with Gorzelle on a two-run single by Warnock to extend the Apps lead to 3-0.

N.C. Central struck back in the fifth (3-1) with a two-out double by Sarah Kaiser to score Mae'Risha Watts, who singled earlier in the frame.

Gorzelle ripped a two-hopper off the centerfield fence double to lead off the sixth inning.  Senior Brittany Pierce reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and pinch hitter Allie Cashion rocketed a three-run homer for her fourth of the season.  Rembielak tallied her second hit of the game on a bunt single and single by Warnock put runners on second and first with no outs.

Junior Meghan Smith lined a double off the fence to score Rembielak and Warnock.  Williams earned a walk to put runners on the corners and Rogers ended the game with a single to left field.

The Mountaineers wrap up the Subway Spartan Classic with a game versus N.C. Central at 11 a.m. and a contest against host USC Upstate at 1 p.m. at Cyrill Stadium.

Dayton 7, Appalachian State 3

Louisiana Tech 8, Samford 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The long ball doomed Appalachian State University softball in the, 7-3, setback to Dayton on Saturday afternoon at Cyrill Stadium.

The Flyers (3-9) used three home runs to end the Mountaineers' (7-6) three-game winning streak.

Dayton's Kathleen Maloof belted her fifth home run of the season to give the Flyers a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third-inning.  Pinch hitter Tiffany Ricks extended UD's lead, 6-0, on a three-run homer to left field.

The Mountaineers took a run back, 6-1, in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Caroline Rogers to score fellow freshman Sarah Warnock.

UD's Brandy Brown led off the fifth frame with a solo home run to increase the Flyers lead to 7-1.

Appalachian didn't go down without a fight as freshman Cynthia Gomez's speed forced the shortstop to hurry on the throwing error.  Freshman Danie Heichen singled to center to load up the bases after a Michelle Gorzelle single to third.  Pinch hitter Caroline Williams sac flied to right center to score Gomez and cut ASU's deficit to 7-2.  Gorzelle scored the Apps final run on a fielder choice by Warnock.

Warnock led the Apps offense with a 3-for-4 day with a run and RBI, followed by Heichen who went 2-for-3.

Freshman Caroline Wainwright took the loss for the Mountaineers as she struck out four and gave up seven runs (three earned runs) in the complete-game performance.

Dayton's Sydney Cicchetti kept the Apps off balance all afternoon giving up seven hits and three unearned runs with five strikeouts.

The Mountaineers will face-off N.C. Central for the third-time this season on Saturday night at 7 p.m. to close out the second day at the Subway Spartan Classic.  

Samford 13, Columbia 1

STARKVILLE, Miss. ---- The Samford softball team split its games Saturday at the Mississippi State Tournament, defeating Columbia in five innings, 13-1, before falling 8-2 to Louisiana Tech in the final game.

Samford (4-10) played in two very different games Saturday, as the offense carried them to a lopsided win over Columbia (1-3), while hitting was at a premium against Louisiana Tech (9-9).  With the win, Misha Aldridge moves to 2-5 on the season, while Robyn Harmon falls to 2-4.

Between the two games, Caroline Seay and Julianne Surane accounted for the vast majority of the offense, combining for nine hits and eight RBI.  Seay's bat had plenty of pop, as four of her five hits on the day were doubles.  Kayla Shaffer and Aldridge both had a double on Saturday, while Harmon hit her first home run of the season.

Game One: Samford 13 (4-9), Columbia 1 (1-3) - 5 Innings

The Samford offense had their highest-scoring output of the season against Columbia, as the Bulldogs piled on 13 runs, ending the game after five innings with a score of 13-1, their highest margin of victory so far this season.  Surane, in only her second defensive start of the season, was a catalyst at the plate, going a perfect 4-4 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored.  Caroline Seay hit three doubles in the game, going 3-4 with three RBI.  Aldridge allowed one run in the first inning but prevented the Lions from scoring the rest of the game, allowing eight hits with three strikouts to earn her second win of the season on the mound.

Kalli Schultea took the loss on the mound for Columbia, while catcher Liz Caggiano was their offensive leader, going 2-3 with an RBI.

Samford threatened early, as they had two on with two out in the top of the first.  Shelby Scott ended the inning with a hard-fought 12 pitch at-bat, coming back from starting 0-2 to make the count full.  She eventually popped up to first base to end the inning, though the Columbia starter had to work hard for the third out.

Columbia put together a three-hit inning in the bottom half of the first, plating one to take the early 1-0 lead.  The second batter of the inning knocked a single into right field and advanced all the way to third on an error.  The following batter hit a ground ball to Abby Adams at shortstop, who threw out the runner trying to score from third.  A single put runners at the corners with two out and another single brought one in from third and put runners on first and second.  A groundout ended the rally, as the Lions left two on base.

With one out in the top of the second, the Bulldogs put up three consecutive hits, four total, to take a 2-1 lead.  Misha Aldridge started the rally with a one-out double to left center, which Julianne Surane followed with a single back up the middle to put runners at the corners.  Freshman Caroline Seay then hit her first career extra-base hit, bringing home Aldridge with a double to put two runners in scoring position.  Rachel Bickert hit a ground ball to the short stop, who thew Seay out at third but allowed Surane to score on the fielder's choice.  A single by Kayla Shaffer put two runners on again, but an ensuing flyout would end the top half of the inning, as Samford took the lead.

The Samford offense exploded in the top of the third, tacking on five runs on five hits, three of which were extra base hits, to pull ahead 7-1.  Harmon led off the inning with a solo home run, her first of the season, to make the score 3-1.  With two outs in the inning, Samford would string together four consecutive hits to widen the lead.  Surane started things off with a single to center field, scoring Madeline Baker from second.  Seay followed that with her second double of the game, making the score 5-1 and ending the day for Columbia starting pitcher Schultea.  Bickert welcomed the new pitcher into the game with an RBI single up the middle and Shaffer followed with an RBI double to bring Bickert home all the way from first.

After Aldridge pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the third to preserve the six-run lead, Surane knocked in her third hit of the day in the top of the fourth, an RBI double to bring home Scott from second and extend Samford's lead to 8-1.

With one out in the top of the fifth, Harmon hit a sacrifice fly out to score Bickert from third and advance Shaffer to third.  Scott followed with an RBI single to put Samford up 10-1.  Later, with the bases loaded, Surane would earn her fourth hit of the game, an infield RBI single.  A passed ball scored Abby Adams from third and put two in scoring position, and Seay hit her third double of the game to score one, which ended the day for Columbia's second pitcher and made the score 13-1 after 4.5 innings.

Facing a large deficit, the Lions only tacked on one more hit in the bottom half of the fifth, as Aldridge preserved the run-rule victory for the Bulldogs, their first such victory of the season.

Game Two: Louisiana Tech 8 (9-9), Samford 2 (4-10)

Louisiana Tech won the nightcap with the long ball, hitting three home runs in an 8-2 victory over Samford.  Harmon, starting on the mound for Samford, took the loss to move to 2-4 on the season.  Only three of the eight runs were earned, and she allowed six hits while striking out five.  Michelle Jones earned the win for Louisiana Tech, improving to 6-3 on the season allowing one run on five hits.

Seay was the only Bulldog with multiple hits in the game, going 2-3 with a double and an RBI.  The heart of the Bulldogs order would account for the rest of the offense, as their two-through-five hitters had one hit each.

The Bulldogs found themselves in an early hole after the top of the first, as a bases-loaded walk followed by a grand slam gave the Lady Techsters the early 5-0 advantage.

Pitching dominated the middle portion of the game, as the teams only combined for two more hits through the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth, a leadoff double followed by a two-run homer pushed Louisiana Tech's lead up to 7-0.  Samford broke into the run column in the bottom half of the inning, avoiding the shutout as Surane grounded out down the first base side, allowing Madison Dickey to score from third.

The teams would split runs in the seventh, as the Lady Techsters hit a solo homer in the top half, while Seay hit her first double of the game, her fourth of the day, to bring home Abby Adams from first in the bottom half.  The inning would end with a final score of 8-2.

Samford plays two more games tomorrow as they face Eastern Illinois (1 p.m.) and host team Mississippi State (3 p.m.).  The Bulldogs have faced both these teams earlier this season.

Chattanooga 5, Ole Miss 3

Troy 9, Chattanooga 8

OXFORD, Miss. - The Chattanooga softball team avenged a previous loss, 9-6 on Friday, to Ole Miss  (7-6) with a 5-3 victory on Saturday night at the Red and Blue Classic for the program's first road win at a SEC-foe since 2001 when the Lady Mocs knocked-off then-No. 3 Alabama, 4-3.Chattanooga jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first game before Troy (14-2) came back to score nine unanswered runs in a 9-8 win in eight innings.

The workhorse in the circle at Ole Miss was freshman pitcher Taylor Deason, who tossed a five-hit complete game with a season-high 11 strikeouts as Chattanooga registered its first win over a SEC opponent since a 9-6, nine inning, victory over Kentucky at Frost Stadium on Feb. 10, 2008.

Sophomore second baseman Sara Poteat registered two hits in both games and combined to drive in two runs. Five Lady Mocs drove in runs against the Rebels including solo home runs by senior catcher Vivian Morimoto (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman outfielder Cheyenne Willis. It was the fifth-straight game that Chattanooga registered more than 10 hits dating back to the record setting afternoon vs. Dayton.

Notching two hits against the Rebels was sophomore outfielder Layne Raineye, Tenn.), freshman outfielder Nicole Osterman, Poteat and Wills.  Adding two hits vs. Troy was junior first baseman Kasey Tydingco, sophomore outfielder Kaiti Dutton, senior designated player Michelle Fuzzard and Poteat.

Driving in two runs against the Trojans was senior shortstop Jessica Traxler, Osterman and Tydingco. The Lady Mocs were up 8-0 on Troy before it scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth to knot the contest at one. A walk-off single in the eighth by Michelle Hewitt completed the Trojan comeback.

Earning the start against Troy was Deason and tossed four strong innings with just one hit before the opponent knocked her out of the game. Fuzzard completed the contest and took the loss to fall to 3-4 on the season.

Game One: Troy 9, Chattanooga 8 (8 inn.)

Chattanooga opened the contest with a single back to the pitcher by Poteat. She was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Willis. A single through the left side by Fuzzard placed runners on the corners. Tydingco, batting cleanup, plated the first run of the game with a single to left field. 

During the fourth inning everything came together for the Lady Mocs, who scored six runs to increase the lead to 8-0. Poteat started it off with a singled to center and took second on a fielding error by the center fielder. Willis hit a liner to center, placing runners on the corners, and Fuzzard loaded the bases reaching on an error by the pitcher.

Entering the fifth, Chattanooga had an eight-run lead and needed just three outs to implement the eight-run rule. Troy would not go away as two infield singles, no more than 10 feet in front of the plate, jumpstarted its offense. A snowball effect ensued as the Trojans loaded the bases and took advantage of back-to-back errors on plays meant to cut down the runner coming to the plate brought the deficit to 8-2. 

Following a single up the middle and a double to left, Fuzzard came in to relieve Deason in the circle with the Lady Mocs up 8-6. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native quickly got the first out, but a double and single from Troy knotted the contest up at eight before the Lady Mocs were able to retire the side.

Prior to the eight, each team notched a base knock. Chattanooga was unable to score the runner in the Olympic tiebreaker from second in the top half. Troy knowing it just need one run for the come-from-behind victory moved the runner on second to third on a sacrifice bunt, then Hewett stepped to the plate and delivered the walk-off hit, a single off the fence in left.

Troy was led offensive by Michelle Hewett and Ashley Rainey, who each registered multi-hit games, while Nikki Hollett had the lone multi-RBI game. Notching the victory was Ashley Rainey to improve to 5-1 on the season, who logged 4.2 innings and three strikeouts.

Game Two: Chattanooga 5, Ole Miss 3 

The Lady Mocs started off on the right foot as the second batter of the game, Willis, connected on a solo shot to right center. The Manchester, Tenn., native has connected on two homers, both in the first inning, this season.

Following a one-two-three inning for Deason in the circle, Morimoto provided a little insurance with a lead-off home run to right center. It was her third of the season.

Continuing the offense was Traxler, who reached on an error, and Roberts beat-out an infield single to short. Osterman loaded the bases with a single up the middle. A Poteat single to left tacked on the third run of the day for the Lady Mocs. Chattanooga was unable to add any more as it left the bases loaded.

In the third inning, Morimoto walked and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Traxler. Reaching on a wild pitch following a strikeout was Roberts, putting runners on the corners. Coming through with a clutch single up the middle was Osterman extending the Lady Mocs lead to 4-0.

The fourth was led off by Poteat with a single to first as no one was covering the bad. Willis used a sacrifice bunt to move her to second. After a hit-by-pitch to Fuzzard, Tydingco singled up the middle increasing the advantage to 5-0.

The Ole Miss offense awoke in the six scoring three runs on two hits, but was aided by two Lady Mocs errors. It was an infield single that placed two runners on and the Rebels loaded the bases before pinch hitter Natalie Nimmo doubled right field and was out at third on a relay from second baseman Poteat.

During the seventh, Deason struck out the first batter before back-to-back singles put pressure on the Chattanooga defense. A ground out to second recorded the second out before Deason notched her 11th strikeout of the game to set a new season-high.
