Elon has strong outing at Raleigh Relays
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Elon track and field team returned to action March 30, at the Raleigh Relays on the campus of North Carolina State University.
 
Allyson Oram set the new Elon record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:04.29 for eighth in section two. In section three, Morgan Denecke claimed 19th after running in 18:12.24 and Haylee Dawe took 27th in section four with a time of 19:28.98. Kaitlin Stober clocked a time of 19:02.88 that placed her 12th in section five, while Katelyn O’Dunne posted a 19:59.86 for 27th.
 
Louise Prevoteau tied for the top prize in section two of the long jump with a leap of 18’3”. The freshman also posted a time of 15.25 for 32nd in the 100-meter hurdles.
 
Amy Salek took fourth out of 120 runners in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.70. Bria Bell finished 23rd in 56.48 and Jackie Madden clocked a time of 1:01.49 for 93rd.
 
In the 100-meter dash preliminaries, Dana Cataldo finished 38th with a time of 12.45, followed by Kayleigh Birks in 43rd (12.70) and Cara Hughes in 57th (13.07).
 
Emily Tryon posted the best time for the Phoenix in the 1,500-meter run in section four with a time of 4:51.32 for 15th. In sections five through eight, Brennan McDavid and Christine Pacewicz finished 16th and 17th, respectively, with times of 4:53.01 and 4:53.23. Jenny Gallagher (46th) clocked a 5:11.21 and Kylie Womack (54th) finished in 5:24.30.
 
Charlise Morgan and Alyssa Girvin finished 20th and 41st in the discus with throws of 127’ and 102’7”. Morgan also took 15th in the shot put with a toss of 41’5.75”.
 
The Elon track and field team set two records March 31, in the final day of competition at the Raleigh Relays.
 
Records came in the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relays. The 4x100 team, comprised of Dana Cataldo, Amy Salek, Bria Bell and Veronica Luedke, clocked a record time of 47.14 for eighth out of the 19 teams in the race. The 4x200 team, which included Cataldo, Bell, Luedke and Salek, claimed sixth with a new record time of 1:39.43. The 4x400-meter relay team took eighth out of 30 teams with a time of 3:46.11 by members Bell, Luedke, Louise Prevoteau and Sakek.
 
Luedke took 14th in the 400-meter hurdles after posting a 1:03.87, while Abigail Steinsiek finished 50th with a time of 1:10.07. Cataldo earned 14th in the 200-meter dash, clocking a 25.79.
 
In the javelin, Suzanne Martin took 13th with a heave of 119’2”. Alyssa Girvin earned 30th in the hammer throw after a throw of 140’6”, while Charlise Morgan made a toss of 132’10” for 35th.
 
Elon will send athletes to both the Duke Invitational and the Liberty Collegiate Invitational next week, Friday – Saturday, April 6 – 7.

Furman has strong outing over the weekend
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman track and field squads competed in two separate meets on Friday, with part of the team competing at the Emory Classic Meet at the Emory University Track in Atlanta, Ga., and another group of Paladins participating in the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track on the campus of N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C.

Senior Brian Toney placed fourth with a throw of 45.92 (150-08) in the men’s javelin, while freshman Gretchen Gabrielson recorded a ninth-place finish with a mark of 27.24 (89-04) in the women’s javelin to lead Furman at the Emory Classic. 

In the long jump, Toney captured tenth place with a mark of 5.85 (19-02.50), followed by freshman Carson Priest in 15th place at 5.25 (17-02.75).  Sophomore Giorgio Montenegro placed 18th in the event, recording a jump of 5.00 (16-05).

Sophomore Alexa Wilton finished tenth in the 400m High Hurdles after posting a time of 1:11.45.  Senior Erin McChristian placed 15th in the high jump with a jump of 1.25 (4-01.25), then tallied a 19th-place finish in the long jump at 4.37 (14-04).  She took 24th-place in the javelin with a throw of 15.89 (52-01).

At the Raleigh Relays, senior Lee Gilmer paced the Paladins with a time of 3:47.95 for 11th place in the 1500m.  Freshman Blair Burke recorded a 20th-place finish in the 3,000m Steeplechase after notching a time of 11:36.38 to lead the Furman women’s team.

UNCG breaks several records at Raleigh Relays
RALEIGH, N.C. – UNCG's track and field teams broke several school records on the first day of the Raleigh Relays on Friday, highlighted by Paul Chelimo’s victory in the 1,500 meters at NC State’s Paul Derr Track.
 
Chelimo’s time of 3:40.25 is not only a new school record and personal best, but is also currently the fastest time in the country at that distance. He also broke the Raleigh Relays meet record that had stood since 1993 by more than four seconds.
 
Joey Thompson also set a new personal record in the 1,500m, running 3:48.90, which was good for fourth place. Paul Katam finished eighth in 3:54.72.
 
Abraham Kemboi set a new personal best time of his own in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:03.19 for a fifth-place finish.
 
In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Taylor Day (9:58.65) and Eric Williams (10:00.13) each had good races, finishing in 12th place and 13th place, respectively.
 
On the women's side, Kerry Hartman started the day well for the Spartans by shaving seven seconds off her personal best time in the 1,500 meters en route to a new school record. Hartman finished ninth overall in the event with a time of 4:27.04.
 
In the 5,000m, Chelsea Sumney paced the Spartans by finishing 15th in a time of 16:36.46. Not far behind was twin sister Shaina Sumney, who finished 21st, posting a time of 16:48.15.
 
Ginny Cronley set a new school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36.38.59, good enough for a 16th-place finish.
 
The second day of competition will begin Saturday morning with the 3,000 meter racewalk. 

The UNCG men’s and women’s track teams wrapped up competition at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday with Haley Wenos setting a new school record in the 400-meter hurdles. Meanwhile, Ashley Schnell ran at the Winston-Salem State Collegiate Invitational, erasing the school record in the 1,500 meters.
 
At NC State’s Paul Derr Track, Wenos finished in 1:14.84 and was the only member of the women’s team competing at the Raleigh Relays on Saturday.
 
On the men’s side, the team of Tyron Alston, John Teeter, Brian Carrington and Dylan Belles clocked a 16:53.64 to finish ninth overall in the 4x1,500 meter relay.
 
At the Civitan Park/Winston-Salem State University Track & Field Facility, Schnell turned in a time of 4:23.57 to erase a school standard that had stood all of a day. Kerry Hartman set the previous record of 4:27.04 on Friday at the Raleigh Relays.
 
Schnell’s winning time was easily the best in the field, as her nearest competitor finished in 4:59.
 
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend when they will split the squad, sending delegates to the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., and to the Stanford Invite in Palo Alto, Calif.

Appalachian State grabs three first-place finishes at Mountain vs. Beach Invitational
WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jamal Tiller was one of three athletes to grab a first-place finish for Appalachian State University men’s track and field at Saturday’s Mountain vs. Beach Invitational at Harold Greene Track.

The Mountaineers were paired with Western Carolina in a battle against East Carolina and UNC Wilmington, who represented the Beaches in the annual event.

Despite a 345.5-310.5 victory for the Beach schools, Appalachian had several standout performers including Tiller, whose leap of 49’4.5” in the triple jump placed him two inches ahead of the next competitor.

Darius Purcell brought home the high jump title yet again with a leap of 7’0.25” while Daryl Saunders finished second with a mark of 6’9”.

Landon Powell rounded out the Apps’ top finishers with a victory in the 200-meter dash (21.66 seconds) and Dennis Moore finished second with a time of 21.94.

In the distance events, Charles Wofford grabbed third in the 3,000-meter run (8:57.82) while James Howard-Smith was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:49.65).

Jacob Stow was third in the pole vault (15’3”) while Jared Stalling (55’9.25”) and Nick Sansotta (47’1”) finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put.

Appalachian’s 4x100-meter relay team of Moore, Powell, AJ Dohanic and Justin Thomas finished first with a time of 40.82 seconds.

Despite a 353-321 victory for the Beaches on the women’s side, Appalachian churned out several impressive performances including a top finish from Shaquiela Robinson in the high jump (5’4.25”).

Hannah Orders captured first-place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:56.18 while Gayshawna Watkins took the shot put title with a toss of 44’0”.

Other top finishes for Appalachian State included Molly Vaughn, who took fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.80) and Asia Dunlap, who finishes fourth in the 400-meter run (56.18).

Breanna Alston was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.88 seconds and also finished second in the  200-meter dash (24.45) while Shenita Martin grabbed fourth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:03.93).

Cassie Crawford was the pole vault runner-up with a vault of 12’3.50” and Erika Ivey finished third in the triple jump (37’11.25”). Jasmine Suydam finished second in the shot put (43’6”) to round out the Mountaineers’ top finishers in the field events.

Appalachian State returns to action at the Auburn Invitational next Saturday before hosting the Appalachian Open Meet on April 13.
