UNCG 5, Georgia Southern 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Playing its first match in Greensboro in exactly a month, UNCG's women's tennis team topped Georgia Southern 5-2 at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday to remain perfect in Southern Conference play.

With the win, the Spartans improved to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in league play. Georgia Southern fell to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in the SoCon.

UNCG got things started with a dominating performance in doubles. Kayla Gammie and Annette Rios pitched a shutout at No. 3, blanking the Eagles' Mimi Bollaci and Natalie Maffett, 8-0. The Spartans' 66th-ranked duo of Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins clinched the point with an 8-1 win over Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 1.

Devon Sutherland and Alex Whitehead completed the sweep at No. 2, dropping Scottie French and Cameron Williams, 8-2.

In singles play, Whitehead breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Allison Beeler at No. 2 to get things started. Dougherty followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Williams at No. 4 and Wilkins clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Garrido at No. 1. The win was Wilkins' 12th straight.

Annette Rios made it a 5-0 UNCG advantage with her 6-1, 6-1 win over Kitchen at No. 3.

The Eagles got on the board with a pair of super tiebreaker wins at the bottom of the lineup. Maffett broke up the shutout with a 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Sutherland at No. 6, and Alessandra Dzuba closed things out with a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) win over Stephanie Falcon at No. 5.


Samford 5, Wofford 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- The Samford University women's tennis team tallied a key 5-1 Southern Conference victory Sunday as the Bulldogs knocked off the Wofford Terriers in a weather-altered contest held at The Westside Club.

Samford (11-5, 3-4 SoCon) improved to 2-1 on its current five-match road trip. Earlier this week, the Bulldogs breezed to a 7-0 victory at Western Carolina, but then fell short in a hard-fought 5-2 defeat at Furman on Saturday.

Wofford (4-9, 0-3 SoCon) suffered its second-straight loss Sunday. Against Chattanooga on Saturday, the Terriers dropped a 5-2 decision to begin its two-match weekend homestand.

The Bulldogs swept the doubles competition Sunday and then received quick straight-set singles victories from Kristin Lewis, Rebecca Kirven, Lindsey Mallory and Emily Mallory.

In the No. 2 singles contest, Samford's Lewis rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Wofford's Julia Paulson, while the Bulldogs' Kirven notched a 6-3, 6-4 victory over the Terriers' Othilia Lindqvist in the No. 4 contest. On courts Nos. 5 and 6, Samford's Lindsey and Emily Mallory registered respective wins against Wofford's Emily Przystawski, 6-0, 6-1, and Samantha Sullivan, 6-1, 7-6(4).

The Bulldogs' Lindsey Mallory extended her team-best winning streak to four-consecutive matches and improved her singles record to 10-4 this season. Emily Mallory, while competing at the No. 6 singles position this year, moved her record to 7-2.


Furman 4, Chattanooga 3

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Furman women's tennis team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play and extended its winning streak to six matches with a 4-3 win over Chattanooga Sunday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins opened the match by winning two out of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point.  Freshman Alex Moreno-Kaste and junior Michele Stanford defeated Alexa Flynn and Kaylene Chadwell, 8-4, in the top match, and the duo of freshman Kelly Sullivan and junior Lauren Kline posted an 8-4 win over Jenna Nurik and Claire Mulyadi in the third doubles match-up.  Chattanooga's Emily Hangstefer and Shaina Singh combined to beat sophomores Katherine Oudin and Margaret Boyette, 8-7, at number two doubles.

Furman took a 3-0 lead early in the singles competition, as Moreno-Kaste recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Singh at number five and Boyette tallied a 6-0, 7-6 triumph over Hangstefer in the fourth-seeded match.  

Flynn put the Mocs on the board with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Stanford in the second singles contest, then Nurik bested Kline, 6-3, 6-4, in the top match to cut the deficit to 3-2.  Sophomore Amanda Murray clinched the team victory for the Paladins with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Mulyadi in the sixth-seeded match, then Chadwell defeated Oudin, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (12-10) at number three singles.


UNC Wilmington 6, Appalachian State 1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Amidst a wet weekend across the state, Appalachian State University women's tennis fell to cross-state rival UNC Wilmington, 1-6, in neutral-site, non-conference action at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Center.

The Mountaineers (9-6, 2-2 SoCon) suffer back-to-back losses for the second time this season, while the Seahawks (9-5, 4-1 Colonial) have won their third straight match.

Sunday's match began with singles action with Appalachian junior Ellie Linsell powering through her match at the top of the lineup, 6-4, 7-5.

Rounding out the rest of the singles play, UNC Wilmington took a firm control over the five remaining matches, winning each in straight sets with no Mountaineer scoring more than three games.

UNCW swept all three doubles matches, giving up a combined four games across all three positions.

After six matches away from Boone, the Mountaineers finally return home on Wednesday for their next match against Southern Conference opponent UNCG at 1:30 p.m.
