Wofford 4, UNCG 3

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's tennis team claimed its second consecutive SoCon victory, taking a 4-3 decision over UNCG Saturday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center.
 
With the win, the Terriers improve to 3-8 overall and 2-2 in Southern Conference play, while the Spartans drop to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in league action.
 
The Terriers took the early advantage, taking two of the three doubles matches to claim the point.  At the No. 3 position, the duo of Walker Heffron and Jackson Keith defeated Cameron Smith and Jimmy Roueche (8-4), and the pairing of Tinus Van Wyk and Rob Galloway clinched the point at the No. 1 position, defeating Orcun Seyrek and Ahmet Sarioglu (9-8).
 
In singles action, the Terriers took three matches to seal the overall victory.  At the No. 4 position, Rob Galloway fought off a comeback attempt by Randy Phillips to win in the third set (7-6, 0-6, 6-3).  Tom Wood picked up a straight set victory at the No. 5 position, defeating Cameron Smith (6-4, 6-2), and Walker Heffron defeated Jimmy Roueche (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 6 spot.


Appalachian State 7, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga. - Appalachian State had to wait a day but came away with a 7-0 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday.  The match was originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday but was delayed repeatedly due to inclement weather.

The match began with Appalachian (7-5, 1-1 SoCon) sweeping all three doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers took an early lead in four singles matches before Friday's action was suspended due to rain.

On Saturday, senior Alain Humblet polished off the first singles point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles, and classmate Alex Markov soon picked up a win by identical score at the No. 1 position.

Senior Steve Karendal added to his doubles win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles to earn Appalachian's fourth team point and clinch the match. In the No. 2 match, classmate Philip Kloc needed an extra game to seal the second set in his 6-4, 7-5 win.

Sophomore Matt Saltsgaver fought a close first set but broke open the second to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6, while fellow sophomore Sebastien King wrapped the match with a 6-3, 7-5 win in the No. 4 singles match.


Davidson 7, Winthrop 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. -  The Davidson men's tennis team made it two wins in a row in impressive fashion by rolling to a 7-0 win over visiting Winthrop on Saturday afternoon in the Knobloch Tennis Center.

Davidson earned its third win in the all-time series since 1988 vs. the Eagles, winning for the first time since 1991. The Wildcats improved to 6-8 overall, picking up their fifth home win. The Eagles fell to 8-10 overall.

After scoring a 6-1 Southern Conference win last weekend, the 'Cats earned their second 7-0 win of the year by winning every match.

The match started out with Davidson scoring 8-3, 8-6 and 8-2 wins at all three doubles spots. The No. 1 team of Calum Gee and Joe Schafer picked up their eighth win together, while the pair of Kevin Moore and Robert Lightbourn won for the third time as a team.

Connor Evins and Chris Mark finished out the doubles wins with their team-leading 10th victory of the year. They pushed their record at No. 3 doubles to a perfect 8-0.

All five Wildcats then scored wins in singles play, while freshman Nicky Kunz capped off the team victory with a three-set victory at No. 2 by the score of 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. The first-year player improved 9-5 in singles action, 3-1 when playing the No. 2 slot.

Evins tallied his team-leading sixth straight win when he forced a super tie-breaker after recording a 6-4 win in the second set. Since the team match had been decided, he and Luka Stanic played a super tie-breaker, with Evins winning 10-5. The sophomore is 6-2 on the year.

Schafer and Mark each won in straight sets, picking up 6-2, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-4 decisions at the No. 1 and 3 singles spots, respectively. Schafer evened his season record to 7-7, while Mark picked up his second win in a row and fourth overall victory.

Gee needed an extra set for his fifth win of the season. The senior split his first two sets, 6-4, 4-6, before sealing up the win with a strong 6-2 triumph in the third set.

Rounding out the winning afternoon was Lightbourn, who won his third singles match in a row. The sophomore battled hard and came out on top with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 5. He has netted all seven of his wins at No. 5 (7-4), improving to 7-6 overall.

Davidson will turn around and play SoCon-foe Appalachian State at home tomorrow, March 25, at 1 p.m.
