GREENVILLE, S.C. - Matt Waissen came from behind for a 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over sophomore Alex Christ in the number two singles match to propel the UNC Asheville men's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over Furman Tuesday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The match proved particularly close, as the top four singles matches all went three sets.
Furman juniors Tyler Droll and Andrew Mellow scored a quick 8-0 win over Pete Conaty and Will Goldberg in the number three doubles match, then UNC Asheville's Thomas Rees and Adrien Langeard combined to defeat sophomore Nate Collins and senior Watson George, 8-2, at number two doubles, setting up a decisive match in the top spot. Matt Wiassen and Jonas Brobeck recorded a 9-7 win over sophomores Alex Christ and Joel Cook to clinch the doubles point for the Bulldogs.
Droll rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win over Conaty in the sixth-seeded singles match to put the Paladins on the board, but Ryan Matthews scored a 6-2, 6-4 victory over junior Robbie Aru at number five singles to put UNC Asheville back on top.
Mellow, ranked 110th nationally in singles, posted a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Langeard in the number one singles spot to tie the score at 2-apiece, then Cook gave the Paladins a 3-2 advantage after coming from behind for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win versus Brobeck in the third-seeded contest. Thomas Rees defeated freshman Jacob Behal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, at number four singles to tie the score at 3-3, setting up the decisive match at number two singles.
Furman (4-11, 1-1 SoCon) continues its three-match home stand Friday when the Paladins entertain UNC Greensboro at 3 p.m.
