Wendt Leads Furman In Final Round At Clover Cup

Mesa, Ariz. - The Furman women's golf team fought hail and high winds to post the second lowest round of the day and capture a share of eighth place in the Clover Cup at the par-72, 6,209-yard Longbow Golf Club on Sunday.

Senior Liz Wendt (+16), who birdied three of her final five holes, fired a final round 71 to guide Furman to a 15-over 303 on a day that included rain, 20 M.P.H. winds and a delay for hail. Freshman Daffodil Sanchez (+9) registered an 11th place finish after carding a two-over 74 and junior Laura Wearn (+11) earned a share of 17th place.

The University of Colorado (-9) shot a nine-over 297 to cruise to a 31-stroke victory over second place Oklahoma (+22). Tulsa (+28), Texas Tech (+40) and Notre Dame (+41) rounded out the top five in a 12-team field that included five of the top 40 teams in the nation.

Jessica Wallace (-5) of Colorado claimed individual medalist honors finishing ahead of teammates Alex Stewart (-3) and Emily Talley (-1) who took second and third place, respectively.

Furman is back in action March 26-27, at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate in Stockbridge, Ga.

Chattanooga Finishes 15th at SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational
Mocs were led by Jordan Britt finishing three shots ahead of Mississippi State

GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The Chattanooga Mocs ended up 15th three shots ahead of Mississippi State at the SunTrust Gator Women's Golf Invitational. UTC shot 923 for its 54 holes.

Chattanooga native Jordan Britt led the Mocs tying for 39th carding 225. She had the low round today for the squad with a 76 (+6) to go with her opening 70 and yesterday's 79.

Mette Kryger (Nivaa, Denmark) and Sophie Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) finished within a stroke of each other. Kryger shot 231 which was one ahead of Weilguni at 232. Weilguni had a team-best six birdies for the three rounds. Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) shot 236, while Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) tallied a total of 239.

No. 23 Florida and No. 2 Alabama began the day tied at 577 (+17). The two were paired together and battled through all 18 holes with the Gators claiming a one-stroke victory over the Crimson Tide. Florida State was a distant third, 13 strokes back.

The Seminoles' Maria Salinas fired a four-under par 66 to nab medalist honors at minus four, 206. Florida's Camilla Hedburg and USF's Christina Miller tied for second at 208.

Chattanooga has a final regular season tourney April 9-10 at the Knights & Pirates Invite. The event is at Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla. Live scoring can be accessed on GoMocs.com on the women's golf schedule page.

WCU Women's Golf Finishes 14th at Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate
Pair of Swedish freshmen pace the Catamounts

Augusta, Ga. - Western Carolina carded its best round of the three-day tournament with a final round 309 as a team on Sunday, finishing 14th overall at the Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate at the Forest Hills Golf Club.

UT-San Antonio registered a wire-to-wire victory on Sunday, their third overall of the season. The Roadrunners stretched their four-stroke advantage entering the final round, finishing the tournament with an 8-over 296 and posted a six-shot win over event host, Augusta State (886). Purdue (887), Kennesaw State (900) and East Tennessee State (906) rounded out the top five.

Purdue's Paula Reto, last year's tournament runner-up, fired an 8-under 64 to establish a new single-round tournament record and claim a 10-stroke victory over Augusta State sophomore Casey Kennedy. Reto's 54-hole total of 9-under 207 (75-68-64) is second only to Kennedy's 11-under 205 she shot last season as a freshman.

Swedish-born freshmen Sofie Kvarnstrom and Maria Kjelldorff paced the Catamounts in the event, both finishing with a three-day total of 237, placing in a tie for 51st. Kjelldorff carded her tournament-low round of five-over, 77, to advance into the tie for 51st, while Kvarnstrom shot eight-over, 80, to finish tied with her classmate.

Kjelldorff birdied her opening hole on the par-5, No. 17, but struggled with a triple-bogey on the par-4 18th to move to the front nine at two-over. She played the remainder of her 16 holes at three-over with three bogies. Kvarnstrom carded nine bogies with one birdie on her final 18 holes.

A third freshman, Katy Kile, finished tied for 56th, shooting 238 for the tournament after pacing the squad after Friday's opening round. Senior Blaire Minter placed tied for 58th with a three-day total of 239, closing her tournament with a six-over, 78.

Junior Michelle Bello carded a team-low round on Sunday of two-over, 74, advancing to finish tied for 63rd with a tournament score of 241. Bello countered four bogies with a pair of birdies, both coming on the front nine in her final round.

Western Carolina returns to action on March 26-27 at the Lady Panther Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia State at the Eagle's Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. WCU finished eighth in the event a season ago.

 

Wofford Women's Golf Finishes 14th in Weather Shortened Bucknell Invitational

LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The Wofford women's golf team finished 14th at the Bison Invitational at the par-72, 6,022 yard Paiute Golf Club; the Terrier shot a 669 over the weather shortened 36-hole tournament.

Oral Roberts took first with a 614, with San Francisco in second with a 631 and Eastern Kentucky third with a 633.

The players faced high winds on the opening day first and second rounds, while the third round was cancelled due to high winds.

Anne Marie Covar led the Terriers with an 82-78-160 in 19th place, and Lauren Dunbar followed with an 81-84-165. Alex Hendricks fired an 84-86-170, and Tarah Taylor shot an 81-93-174. Sarah Hurt entered the clubhouse with an 89-93-182.

Oral Roberts' Crystal Reeves and Northern Iowa's Brittany Atterbury finished tied for first with scores of 77-75-152 and 73-79-152 respectively.

Wofford will return to the course when they host the Low Country Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. on March 25-26.
