UNCG 5, Chattanooga 2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - UNCG moved to 2-0 in Southern Conference play with a 5-2 win over Chattanooga on Sunday at the Champions Club.
UNCG (7-4, 2-0 SoCon) picked up the doubles point and wins at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles in cruising to the win.
Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie got the Spartans going with an 8-5 win over Emily Hangstefer and Brianna Wishing at No. 3 doubles. Alex Whitehead and Devon Sutherland clinched the point with an 8-4 win over Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh at No. 2.
Chattanooga (9-3, 1-2 SoCon) avoided the doubles sweep at No. 1, where Kaylen Chadwell and Alexa Flynn knocked off UNCG's 66th-ranked tandem of Lucy Dougherty and Niltooli Wilkins, 8-6.
In singles play, Flynn evened the score with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Dilara Yurtkuran at No. 2. Whitehead countered with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Chadwell at No. 3 to put the Spartans back on top, and Dougherty turned in a 7-5, 6-0 win over Singh at No. 5 to make it 3-1.
Hangstefer kept the Lady Mocs alive with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Rios at No. 4, but Wilkins clinched the match with her 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Nurik at No. 1.
Stephanie Falcon wrapped things up with a 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) win over Claire Mulyadi at No. 6.
Furman 7, Georgia Southern 0
STATESBORO, Ga. - The Furman women's tennis team opened the 2012 Southern Conference Season Sunday with a 7-0 win over Georgia Southern at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro, Ga.
The Paladins won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point. Sophomore Margaret Boyette and freshman Kelly Sullivan combined to defeat Scottie French and Cameron Williams, 8-1, at number two doubles, then junior Michele Stanford and sophomore Amanda Murray beat Natalie Maffett and Mimi Bollai, 8-3, in the third doubles match. The Eagles came away with a win in the top doubles match, as the duo of Paola Garrido and Caitlin Kitchen topped junior Lauren Kline and freshman Alex Moreno-Kaste, 8-6.
Furman swept the singles matches, as Kline defeated Garrido, 6-2, 6-1, in the top match, and Stanford held on for a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory over Allison Beeler at number two. In the third-seeded match, sophomore Katherine Oudin notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Kitchen, and Boyette came from behind to beat Williams, 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) at number four. Moreno-Kaste scored a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Dzuba in the fifth singles match-up, and Murray defeated Maffett, 6-0, 6-2, at number six to complete the sweep.
Elon 4, Samford 3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After falling behind 3-0 to Samford on Sunday, March 18, the Elon women's tennis team rallied with four straight singles wins to claim a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs in Southern Conference action from the Samford Tennis Center.
Elon improves to 12-4 on the year and 3-1 in league play with the win, while Samford falls to 9-4 (1-3 SoCon) with the setback.
After dropping the doubles point and two singles matches to the Bulldogs, Frida Jansaker helped limit Samford to a 3-1 lead. Jansaker topped Samford's Stephanie N'tcha, 7-5, 6-3, in two sets to bring the maroon and gold closer. Jansaker has won 11 straight in singles play for the Phoenix.
Briana Berne helped the Phoenix inch closer at No. 6 singles, as her 6-2, 7-5 win over Samford's Jessica Diamond made it a 3-2 match.
Viviana Stavreva helped tie it at 3-all in a highly competitive battle versus Rebecca Kirven. Stavreva won the first set, 6-4, but Kirven bounced back for a dominant 6-1 victory in the second set to push the match to a third set. Stavreva managed to regroup in the third set, claiming a 6-4 victory to put the momentum in Elon's favor with only No. 1 singles remaining.
Jordan Johnston, who was named SoCon Player of the Week this past week, needed three sets at No. 1 singles to clinch the win for Elon. Johnston topped Kristin Lewis, 6-4, in the first set, but fell 6-2 in the second set to send the match to a decisive third set. It was all Johnston in the third set, as the Snellville, Ga., native bounced back for a 6-4 victory to give the Phoenix the 4-3 win over the Bulldogs.
College of Charleston 7, University of Chicago 0
College of Charleston 4, Western Carolina 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The No. 74-ranked College of Charleston women's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 7-0 shutout of NCAA Division III powerhouse University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point. Following a rain delay the CofC women topped Western Carolina, 4-0 in league play.
The Cougars have not allowed a singles or doubles match to their opponent in back-to-back contests including a 7-0 rout of Wofford on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Maroons (6-3) were coming off a fifth-place finish at the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships and suffered their first loss in three matches.
CofC took control of the non-conference match early as freshman Grace Baker and junior Olivia McMillan defeated Chicago's Kelsey McGillis and Megan Tang, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles followed by the sister tandem of senior Caroline Newman and junior Christin Newman, 8-2, at No. 2, to secure the doubles point leading into singles play.
Junior Irene Viana allowed only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over McGillis at the No. 5 line, while freshman Jenny Falcone improved to a team-best 11-3 on the season with two love sets versus Linden Li, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4.
Sophomore Kelly Kambourelis clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Chicago's Jennifer Kung at No. 2 singles.
"Chicago played some great doubles and we anticipated that today," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "They are a very good indoor team and came out with a lot of enthusiasm. They played a great doubles point and we were fortunate to win. In singles, we just had more endurance and consistency than they did to help propel us through. Right now, our players are playing well and we are starting to run on all cylinders getting all of these matches under our belt."
In the afternoon, the Cougars (13-4, 5-0 SoCon), not only battled the elements, but went the distance playing four matches in the course of two short days and compiling an impressive 4-0 record for the weekend.
The Catamounts (1-10, 0-3 SoCon) couldn't match CofC's depth from top-to-bottom as freshman Grace Baker and junior Olivia McMillan as well as freshman Jenny Falcone and sophomore Kelly Kambourelis quickly secured the doubles point allowing zero games in their pro-sets at the No. 3 and No. 2 positions.
Play was suspended at 2:22 p.m. (ET) due to the inclement weather with three of the first six sets of singles completed. The match resumed two hours later on the clay courts at the Live To Play Tennis Center also in Mt. Pleasant.
Like doubles, McMillan and Baker did not relinquish a game to their opponents with a pair of love sets at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Samantha Maddox followed suit clinching the match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over WCU's Katie Barry at No. 4 for the deciding point.
Wofford 7, Presbyterian 0
CLINTON, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team took all singles and doubles matches Sunday afternoon to sweep Presbyterian College, 7-0, at the Templeton Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 4-7 overall, while the Blue Hose drop to 7-8 on the year.
The afternoon kicked off with doubles play, where the pairing of Julia Paulson and Samantha Sullivan defeated Caroline deLoach and Greer Ramson (8-3) at the No. 2 position. Wofford claimed the doubles point shortly thereafter as the duo of Othilia Lindqvist and Lucy Schermerhorn defeated Cara Caruso and Lindsay Krause (9-7) at the No. 3 position. Guinn Garcia and Sarah Evans defeated Patricia Alves and Paige Oelke (9-7) at the No. 1 spot to complete the doubles sweep for the Terriers.
The momentum continued for the Terriers at the onset of singles action. At the No. 3 position, Audrey Coventry defeated Greer Ransom (6-4, 6-2), and Julia Paulson defeated Cara Caruso (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2 position to gain a 3-0 lead.
Wofford sealed the overall match victory at the No. 6 position as Emily Przystawski downed Lucia Leahy (6-3, 6-0). At the No. 5 position, Othilia Lindqvist defeated Caroline deLoach (6-1, 2-6, 6-3), Guinn Garcia defeated Patricia Alves (7-5, 3-6, 16-14) at the No. 4 position, and Sarah Evans defeated Paige Oelke (6-7(4), 6-3, 10-7) at the No. 1 position to give the Terriers victories in all singles matches.
The Terriers will return to SoCon action on Saturday, March 24th as the squad hosts Chattanooga. The match is set for a 12:00 p.m. start time at the Reeves Tennis Center.
