Coastal Carolina 4, Furman 3
GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team overcame a 3-0 deficit to defeat Furman, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins (3-9) jumped out to a quick lead, winning two out of three matches to clinch the doubles point. The Chanticleers (10-1) picked up an 8-1 win in the third doubles match, as Sam Barr and John Karle defeated senior Watson George and sophomore Nate Collins, but Furman rebounded to take the top two matches for the point.
Sophomores Joel Cook and Alex Christ teamed up for an 8-3 win over Matias Di Pasquale and Yusuke Kusuda at number one, and junior Andrew Mellow and freshman Jacob Behal notched a 9-8 victory over Danny Heidecker and Garik Yedigarian at number two to secure the point.
Furman extended its early lead in singles, as junior Tyler Droll defeated Karle, 6-1, 6-3 at number six, then junior Robbie Aru tallied a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Barr in the fifth singles match to push the Paladin advantage to 3-0.
Yedigarian beat Cook, 6-4, 6-2 in the fourth-seeded match to put Coastal Carolina on the board, then Heidecker posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mellow in the number one match to inch the Chanticleers closer. At number three, Kusuda defeated Behal, 6-2, 6-3 to tie the match at 3-apiece, setting up the decisive match at number two. Leo Christofides took the first set, 6-3, for the Chanticleers, then Christ battled back to tie the match with a 6-3 second-set victory. In a close third set, Christofides took the win, 6-4.
Furman hits the road to open the Southern Conference season this weekend. The Paladins will face Samford in Birmingham Friday at 2:30 p.m. then play at Chattanooga Sunday at 1 p.m.
Appalachian State 5, Jacksonville 2
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Following the team's 3-4 loss to Samford in its Southern Conference opener, Appalachian State University men's tennis rebounded with a 5-2 win over Jacksonville in non-conference action on Tuesday. The Mountaineers (5-4, 0-1 SoCon) have regained their winning record, while JU (2-8) has lost six straight matches.
In doubles action, Appalachian's top pair of Sebastien King and Philip Kloc triumphed at the No. 1 slot, winning 8-3. Senior Steve Karendal and junior Andrew McKinnon also found success as a pair, taking an 8-4 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for ASU.
Appalachian State's Alain Humblet and Alex Markov took their pairs match to 7-7 before finally edging their Jacksonville foes for an 8-7 victory to complete the doubles sweep.
On the singles side, Markov coasted to a 6-1, 6-3 win at the top individual spot. No. 2-man Kloc found equally dominant success in his 6-2, 6-1 victory.
Despite Appalachian's control of the match, the Dolphins managed to pick up two singles wins, stealing the No. 3 match and eventually a three-set match at No. 6.
ASU's King clinched the decisive point for the Apps with his 6-3, 7-6 win in the No. 4 singles spot. Karendal rounded out ASU's scoring by recovering from a one-set deficit to win 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.
