SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Georgia Southern’s Sarah Purvis has been named the Southern Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, while Elon’s Erin O’Shea was named the Player of the Week. The selections are made by the league office.
Purvis tossed her first collegiate no hitter against La Salle on Monday. The sophomore struck out 16 batters, finishing one strikeout shy of the school record.
The Warner Robins, Ga., native recorded 14 strikeouts against Samford in the league opener later in the week. Purvis closed out the week, getting the start in the circle on Sunday for the Eagles. She went four innings, striking out seven while giving up three hits. The right hander picked up her third win of the year in the 12-3 victory in the series and posts a 1.41 ERA.
O’Shea led Elon this weekend in the Phoenix’s sweep over Furman. The senior went 5-for-7 with four runs and four RBI while hitting .714 for the weekend. She did not strike out in any at-bats and was a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
The Kennesaw, Ga., native recorded a .778 on base percentage in the series and finished 3-for-3 at the plate in Saturday’s second game against Furman. She scored two runs, four RBI and a home run.
O’Shea stole a base and recorded a hit in every game for the Phoenix last week.
Also receiving nominations for player of the week Appalachian State’s Allie Cashion, UNCG’s Katelyn Bedwell, Georgia Southern’s Marie Fogle and Chattanooga’s Vivian Morimoto.
Also nominated for pitcher of the week Appalachian State’s Caitlin Wainwright, Elon’s Erin O’Shea and Chattanooga’s Taylor Deason.
