Samford’s Seaman placed sixth at NCAA Indoor Championship
NAMPA, Id. ---- Samford senior Michael Seaman competed at the NCAA Indoor Championships Friday, placing sixth in the men's pole vault, clearing 17-8.5 (5.40m). His finish should earn him first team All-America honors, though the official list of All-Americans will be released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) early next week.
This is the Bardstown, Ky., native's highest finish at the national meet, as he placed 16th at the 2011 outdoor meet. Seaman is a four-time conference champion in the pole vault, having most recently won the 2012 indoor title with a school and conference meet record height of 17-10.5 (5.45m).
He also was the first Bulldog to ever compete at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, placing 10th in this season's meet as the only collegiate competitor in the entire field.
Samford opens its outdoor season this weekend, competing at the Birmingham Southern Invitational on Saturday, March 10.
Elon Opened Outdoor Season at Coastal Carolina Invitational
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Elon track and field team opened its 2012 outdoor season today, March 9, in day one of the Coastal Carolina Invitational at Doug Shaw Stadium.
Suzanne Martin set a new school record in the javelin with a toss of 135’ that placed her fourth out of the 46 competitors in the event. Jordan Lee took 27th with a throw of 96’1”, while Louise Prevoteau finished 37th after throwing for a distance of 82’1”.
Prevoteau finished second in the long jump invitational division with a leap of 17’9.75”. Janelle McNeil, who competed in the open division, jumped a distance of 15’7.75” for eighth.
In the hammer throw, Alyssa Girvin and Charlise Morgan finished 12th and 16th in the field of 44 with marks of 141’3” and 133’11”, respectively.
Claire Smith finished fifth in flight A of the pole vault after hitting a mark of 10’6”. In flight B, Melinda Hersey claimed sixth with a height of 9’6.25”.
The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow, March 10, in the final day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
The Elon track and field team completed action in its first outdoor meet of the year with several top performances in the Coastal Carolina Invitational today, March 10, at Doug Shaw Stadium.
The 4x400-meter relay team, comprised of Bria Bell, Veronica Luedke, Louise Prevoteau and Amy Salek, claimed first in the event of 12 teams with a time of 3:50.49. Elon’s 4x100-meter relay team, which consisted of Dana Cataldo, Kayleigh Birks, Bell and Luedke, finished second only behind Appalachian State with a time of 47.67.
Salek earned another title for Elon in the 400-meter dash after clocking a time of 55.71. Bell finished fourth in the event, finishing in 57.38. In the 84-athlete field of the 200-meter dash, Salek (24.77) took third and Bell (25.05) seventh, while Cataldo (25.61) earned 13th. Cataldo also finished seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.34.
Luedke took first place in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.06, while also finishing the 100-meter hurdles in 15.06 for fifth. Prevoteau took sixth in the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.14.
Allyson Oram claimed fourth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:47.25, followed by Emily Tryon who ran the event in 4:47.70 for fifth. Christine Pacewicz (4:58.09) took 14th, Brennan McDavid (4:59.10) finished 17th and Jenny Gallagher (5:02.14) took 20th to round out the top 20 in the event.
The Phoenix placed four in the top 20 of the 800-meter run with Ellie Taff earning 12th with a time of 2:23.72. Tryon (2:24.44), McDavid (2:24.98) and Jackie Madden (2:25.15) placed 15th – 17th, respectively. Kaitlin Stober was Elon’s top finisher in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:58.03.
In the field events, Alyssa Girvin claimed fifth in the discus with a toss of 129’4”, while Charlise Morgan took eighth in the shot put with a throw of 40’6”. Janelle McNeil finished eighth in the long jump with a leap of 36’5”. Jordan Lee and Haley Laird earned eighth and 12th, respectively, in the high jump after both hitting marks of 5’1”.
The Elon track and field team will return to action on Friday, March 30, for the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
Samford Outdoor Season Opened at Birmingham Southern Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford track and field squad opened its 2012 outdoor season at the Birmingham Southern Invitational, where the Bulldogs won seven events and set three school records as well as six meet records.
Emily Allen set a new school and meet record in the women's hammer throw, winning the event with a toss of 39-7.25 (12.07m). Samford swept the top three spots in the event, with Shelby Builta (148-5, 45.25m) and Katelyn Poole (133-4, 40.65m) placing second and third, respectively. Poole also set a school record this weekend, winning the women's shot put with a distance of 39-7.25 (12.07m). Ashley Cope was the third Bulldog to set a school record, improving on her own mark in the women's pole vault to set the new Samford record at 12-6 (3.81m). The height is also a meet record.
The Bulldogs set two more meet records in the field events, as Builta won the women's discus (138-6, 42.23m) and Bo Ackerson-Gilroy won the men's long jump (22-4.25, 6.81m). On the track, Justin Emerson set a meet record in the men's 100-meter dash (10.83) while Julie McDonald did the same in the women's 100-meter hurdles (14.26).
Thomas Oliver earned a win in the men's javelin (204-2, 62.24m) and also placed third in the men's hammer throw (141-2, 43.04m). Both of Samford's high jumpers won their respective events, as Chenelle Terry topped the field in the women's side (5-5.75, 1.67m) while Tyler Kemp did the same in the men's competition (6-7, 2.01m).
Other top-five finishers this weekend include Ryan Cook (2nd - 14-11, 4.55m) and Cory Sears (3rd - 14-5.25, 4.40m) in the men's pole vault, Builta in the women's javelin (2nd - 129-10, 39.58m), James Graham in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase (2nd - 9:52.97), Josh Davies in the men's shot put (3rd - 42-0.5, 12.81m), Allen in the women's long jump (3rd - 18-0.5, 5.50m), Alex Richter in the men's 200-meter dash (3rd, 22.36), Ashley Bridenbaugh (3rd, 1:05.59) and Leslie Graf (4th, 1:06.1) in the women's 400-meter hurdles, Madeline Cross in the women's 100 (4th, 12.62) and 400-meter dash (5th, 59.13), Ackerson-Gilroy in the men's 110-meter hurdles (4th, 15.40).
Samford continues its outdoor season next weekend at the Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C., beginning Saturday, March 17.
Appalachian State Opened Outdoor Season at Coastal Carolina Invitational
CONWAY, S.C. – Appalachian State University men’s and women’s outdoor track and field opened their respective seasons at the Coastal Carolina Invitational over the weekend and posted strong start on both sides to open the year.
Breanna Alston notched two first-place finishes as Appalachian State University women's track and field opened its outdoor season with a strong finish at the Coastal Carolina Inivational on Saturday.
The Mountaineers finished with a total of seven first-place finishers including wins in four track events, two jump events and one throw event.
Alston won both the 100-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 11.90 and 24.21 seconds, respectively while Kaitlyn Cagle won the 5,000-meter run with a new personal record of 17:35.07.
ASU's 4x100-meter relay team of Alston, Kristen Campbell, D’Shawrna McLucas and Shenita Martin won its event with a time of 46.92 seconds.
Shaquiela Robinson won the high jump with a mark of 1.65 meters (5'05.00 feet) while Erika Ivey took home first-place in the long jump with a mark of 5.16 meters (16'11.25 feet).
Gayshawna Watkins took home top-billing in the shot put with a throw of 14.17 meters (46'06.00 feet) to round out the Apps top finishers.
McLucas was also impressive in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.80 seconds and Asia Dunlap took third-place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.91 seconds.
Martin finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.36 while Helena Shields took fourth with a time of 1:05.00.
On the men's side, Dennis Moore took first-place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.34 seconds while Landon Powell finished with a mark of 10.95 seconds. Justin Thomas also finished in the top-10 in the event with a time of 11.00 seconds to take home ninth-place.
Powell finished fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.06 seconds) while AJ Dohanic and Thomas finished sixth and ninth, respectively, with times of 22.15 and 22.27 seconds. Dohanic also took second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.49 seconds, a new personal record, while Stanley Broaden-Branch finished third with a time of 14.81 seconds.
Josh Cox won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:28.12 minutes and ASU’s 4x100-meter relay team of Dohanic, Moore, Powell and Thomas finished first with a time of 41.23 seconds.
Darius Purcell took home the high jump title with a mark of 2.16 meters (7’01.00 feet) while Daryl Saunders finished second with a jump of 2.05 meters (6’08.75).
Jared Stalling finished second in both the shot put (16.46 meters - 54 feet) and discus throw (50.88 meters - 166’11 feet) and Jacob Stowe took second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.45 meters (14’07.25).
The Mountaineers return to the track next week at the Wake Forest Invitational from March 16-17.
