SPARTANBURG, S.C. – UNCG sophomore Paul Chelimo and The Citadel senior Quintin Turner have been named the Southern Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Week. The selections are made by the league’s track and field coaches.
Chelimo, who picked up his second honor this season, won the Ryan Shay 3,000-meter race at the Notre Dame Meyo Invite on Saturday. The Kenyan’s time of 7:49.87 is a personal record by 22 seconds, which breaks the school record by 26 seconds.
With his performance at the Meyo Invite, Chelimo qualified for the NCAA Championship and currently ranks third nationally.
Turner, a Charleston native, won the 35-pound weight throw and shot put at the Kent Taylor Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina. The senior had a 50’ 10” mark in the weight throw and a 47’ 2.25” mark in the shot put.
The Spartan team will split up this weekend between the Liberty Quad in Lynchburg, Va. and the Spire Invitational in Ohio before competing in the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Championship. The Citadel will compete at the Tiger Paw Invitational and the Gamecock Invitational before the conference championship.
