Davidson 76, Wofford 54

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Davidson got a balanced scoring effort, led by JP Kuhlman's 14 points, and gave up just 15 first-half points to come away with a 76-54 Southern Conference men'sbasketball victory over Wofford in Belk Arena Monday night.

De'Mon Brooks added 13 points and six rebounds for the Wildcats (18-5, 12-1 SoCon), and Jake Cohen scored 12. Chris Czerapowicz added 12 points and six rebounds. The 'Cats got five or more points from eight players on the roster.

Brad Loesing led Wofford (15-10, 8-5 SoCon) with 18 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Karl Cochran collected 17 points and five boards.

The Wildcats scored 15 straight points over a 6:51 period in the first half to turn a two-point lead into a28-11 cushion. Tom Droney scored five of his seven points, and Wofford was 0-for-8 from the floor with two turnovers during the stretch.

Kevin Giltner ended the drought with a jumper, but Davidson went into the locker room with a 32-15 lead. The Wildcats shot 39 percent in the period but held the Terriers to 7-for-26 from the floor and 1-for-7 from 3-point range. Giltner's bucket and a jumper by Cochran were the only points allowed by Davidson over the final 10:11 of the half.

Five straight points from Loesing to start the second frame trimmed the lead to 12 points, but Davidson answered with a 10-4 spurt, capped by a Clint Mann layup, to open an 18-point advantage. The margin grew to 27 following a Cohen layup.

The Terriers were bale to get the lead down to 16 points twice in the final five minutes, but each time Czerapowicz hit a triple to answer.

The Wildcats committed just six turnovers in the game, and outscored Wofford 13-0 from the free-throw line.
 

Elon 82, Appalachian State 59

ELON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball regained its shooting touch but was unable to overcome first-place Elon's solid rebounding advantage and a 17-8 turnover margin in an 82-59 loss on Monday night at Alumni Gym. The loss snapped a string of seven-straight victories over the Phoenix and marked a split in the regular-season series with the division rival.

Led by Nathan Healy's 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting, the Mountaineers (9-14, 5-8 SoCon) bounced back from a rough first half (10-28 FG) to shoot 66.7 percent after the break to finish the night at 49 percent from the field. ASU did not crack the 40-percent mark in either of its last two games, but solid offensive performances off the bench buoyed the mark, which included 6-of-12 three-point attempts.

Cold shooting to open the game put the Apps in an 11-0 hole to start before a flurry of three-pointers pulled the Mountaineers back within six points at 18-12 midway through the period. However, Elon (13-10, 8-4) sank 6-of-10 treys of its own in the opening frame to pull out to a 39-23 halftime lead.

From there, the Phoenix kept the momentum on its side by scoring the first seven points in the second half to increase the advantage to more than 20 points and cruised behind solid shooting of its own to earn the double-digit win. Elon shot 45.2 percent in the game and 8-of-20 from downtown.

Sebastian Koch led his squad with 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting and four three-pointers. Three other Elon players reached double figures on the night, including Drew Spradlin's 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Jack Isenbarger dished out seven of the Phoenix's 21 assists on the night to accompany 11 points.

In his first action in nearly a month, senior Petey Hausley came out firing for eight points in six second-half minutes. The forward was 3-for-3 from the field and sank both free throw attempts to accompany one rebound, a block and a steal. Sophomore Mitch Woods connected on 3-of-6 attempts for a career-best eight points as well. He added an assist and a steal in 19 minutes.

Despite its 38-28 advantage on the glass, no Elon player hauled in more than five rebounds in the contest. ASU's Isaac Butts grabbed 10 boards to pace the Apps. The center added four points on 2-of-2 shooting. Andre Williamson was also active on the boards with four rebounds to accompany four points, a block and a steal.

Appalachian was limited to just three offensive rebounds for six points, compared to 18 points off of 13 offensive boards for Elon. ASU held a 27-13 advantage in bench points and scored 32 points in the paint.

 
Georgia Southern 64, Furman 57

STATESBORO, Ga. - Furman raced out to a double digit first half lead, but Georgia Southern rallied to down the Paladins, 64-57, in Southern Conference men's basketball action on Monday evening at Hanner Fieldhouse.

The loss dropped the Paladins to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in the SoCon while the Eagles climbed into sole possession of second place in the SoCon South Division by improving to 11-12 overall and 9-4 in league play.

Furman jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the opening three minutes on the strength of three-pointers from Bobby Austin and Charlie Reddick before Georgia Southern mounted a 13-0 spurt of its own to lead 13-10 on Marvin Baynham's basket with 14:55 left in the half. The Eagles extended their cushion to as many as eight points, but Austin and Jordan Loyd buried triples to send the Paladins into the locker room knotted at 34-34.

Richard Brown scored five points, including a three-pointer, during an 8-0 run early in the second half as the Paladins grabbed their first lead since the opening minutes, 44-38.

Furman, however, went ice cold from the field over the final 15:30 as the Paladins went just 4-of-22 from the floor with five turnovers as the Eagles outscored the visitors 29-13 the rest of the way.

Furman managed to shoot just 36.4 percent from the field, including only 9-of-32 on two-point attempts for the night. The Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor, made 6-of-10 treys and out-rebounded the Paladins 36-30 to snap a three-game losing streak against Furman.

Austin paced Furman with 13 points while Brandon Sebirumbi added 10 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
