Samford breaks two new school records at Meyo Invite
SOUTH BEND, Ind. ---- Samford concluded its first road trip of the 2012 track and field season Saturday, as they closed out competition at the Meyo Invite with two new school records and three other Bulldogs making their way into the Samford record books.
Claire Goodson improved her school record in the women's pole vault for the third time so far this season, finishing third with a personal-best clearance of 13-1.75 (4.01m). The Alpharetta, Ga., sophomore came into the weekend ranked 33rd nationally and her new mark could put her in the top 25. Ashley Cope also competed in the pole vault, clearing 11-6.25 (3.51m) to finish 21st.
Jonathon Bush improved on his school record in the 400-meter dash, placing 11th Saturday with a time of 49.21. This beats his previous best of 49.39, set at the Auburn Invitational on January 21st. Bush also competed in Saturday's 200-meter dash, finishing in 26th (22.56) while teammate Justin Emerson placed 17th (22.31). Emerson also competed in the 60-meter dash finals, placing 10th in 6.91. Julie McDonald tied her personal-best in Saturday's 60-meter hurdle finals, finishing 10th in 8.75.
Marie Demedicis continued her strong freshman campaign with a new PR in the women's 800 meters, placing 11th in 2:12.65. This moves her to second all-time at Samford, just over two second shy of former Bulldog Hillary Neal’s school record of 2:10.42. Fellow freshman Anna Laura Irvine also ran a strong race, placing 30th with a new PR of 2:15.37 to move up to fifth all-time at Samford.
Holly Benson was Samford's highest finisher in the women's mile, crossing the line 19th (5:00.36) while teammate Chelsea Treadway earned a new PR in 43rd (5:09.34) which puts her at 8th all-time at Samford. In the men's race, Layton Dorsett finished 24th (4:17.18) and in the women's 3,000 meters, Deanna Zidar placed 29th (10:18.20).
Next weekend, Samford will co-host the Samford/UAB/BSC Invite along with UAB and Birmingham-Southern at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Two days of competition begin on Friday, Feb. 10.
Davidson women have strong outing at Kent Taylor Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women’s indoor track and field team competed in its second indoor event of the season when they raced at the Kent Taylor Invitational held on the campus of North Carolina on Saturday.
Erin Osment paced the runners, finishing in fourth place in the 3000 meter dash with a time of 10:39.84. She was one of five ‘Cats that ran in the event. Manya Swick was right behind Osment with a time of 10:44.09 for fifth place. Finishing 12th-14th was Lauren Carter (11:01.06), Megan Mavity (11:02.48) and Annamarie Armistead ((11:07.66).
Sarah Paddon ran to a seventh place finish in the 800 meter dash on a time of 2:23.26. She was not alone as Gracie Watts closed in seven spots behind Paddon with a time of 2:25.89 and Brooke Senken crossed the finish line in a time of 2:29.10.
In the Mile run, Ali Cobb clocked in at a time of 5:31.11 for 17th place. She was followed by Maggie Rickard and Jane Gay, with times of 5:43.13 and 5:47.45, respectively.
Gracie Gordon earned a 13th place finish in the Long Jump with a jump of 4.29 meters. Brittany Elek competed in the Triple Jump, earning a jump of 9.18 meters that got her a 10th place finish.
Rounding out the Wildcats in the 400 meter dash was Ashley Paige with a time of 1:10.03.
Davidson heads up the road to Winston-Salem, N.C., to compete at the Fast Track College Invitational.
Elon records top performances at Kent Taylor Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Elon track and field team completed action in the Kent Taylor Invitational today, Feb. 4, with several top performances, including two titles and a school record in the weight throw.
Alyssa Girvin set a new school record in the weight throw with a toss of 48’8.25”. Also competing with Girvin in the weight throw was Charlise Morgan, who claimed fifth with a throw of 45’5.25”.
Amy Salek fell just short of her Elon record in the 400-meter dash, finishing second with a time of 55.84. Bria Bell (25.72) and Dana Cataldo (26.11) claimed third and fourth, respectively, in the 200-meter dash. Both Cataldo and Luedke finished in the top 8 of the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles to qualify for the finals. Cataldo took eighth with a time of 7.95 in the 60m, while Luedke finished fourth in the 60m-hurdles in 9.17.
Bell, Luedke, Abigail Steinsiek and Salek teamed up for the 4x400-meter relay, finishing second with a new season-best time of 3:56.75.
The Phoenix excelled in the distance events with four top three finishes in three events. Haylee Dawe and Morgan Denecke went one-two in the 3,000-meter run with times of 10:18.05 and 10:21.65, respectively. Julie Hart ran the 800-meter run in 2:20.08 for second, while Allyson Oram took third in the one-mile run with a time of 5:05.12.
In the field events, Morgan claimed second in the shot put with a throw of 41’9.75”. Jordan Lee and Haley Laird finished fourth and fifth in the high jump with heights of 5’5” and 5’3”. College of Charleston women have successful outings at New Balance Collegiate, Kent Taylor Invitational
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s track & field team split up their team and competed at two meets, over 500 miles apart, as both groups had successful outings this weekend. A few athletes competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York, while the majority of the team competed at the Kent Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Sophomore Dena O’Brien started the day off strong for the Cougars as she won the 5,000-meter race at the New Balance Invitational. O’Brien crossed the finish line in 16:40.39, breaking her previous school record of 16:46 that she set when she won the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Championship last year.
O’Brien’s time was six seconds faster than the second-place finisher and over 30 seconds faster than her time at this same meet last year.
The Cougars had a trio of top-20 finishes led by freshman Hayley McMahon’s 19th place finish in the mile run as she clocked a time of 5:07.96, the fourth fastest time in school history for the event.
Senior Alyssa D’Orazio ran the third best 800-meter time in school history as she crossed the finish line in 2:16.36 for 20th place. Also finishing in 20th place was fellow senior Kristen Wolfe in the 3,000-meter run in 10:25.20, the eighth fastest time in school history.
At the Kent Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, freshman Tiffany Sisk finished fourth in the shot put with a heave of 12.33m (40-05.50 feet). Sisk, who holds the school record in the event, recorded the third best mark in school history.
Sophomore Christa Horrocks also earned herself a place in the school record books with her performance in the 400-meter dash. Horrocks ran 1:00.90 to finish in eighth place. Her time is the ninth fastest time in CofC history.
Fellow sophomore Dana Walsh finished 11th in the 800-meter with a time of 2:25.11.
The Cougars will have one final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Championship, as they travel to Clemson, S.C. for the Tiger Paw Invitational Feb. 10-11.
Appalachian State men grab nine top-eight performances at Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Appalachian State University men’s track and field posted nine top-eight finishers at Penn State’s Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday.
In 60-meter hurdles, freshman Stanley Broaden grabbed a fourth-place finish with a personal-best time of 8.16, which puts him fifth all-time in ASU’s record book, while senior AJ Dohanic crossed the finish line in 8.26 for sixth-place.
Junior Landon Powell rounded out the Mountaineers top sprinters with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter dash (6.91) and a tenth place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.25).
Junior Alex Taylor ran a personal-best time of 4:05.73 to place sixth in the mile and is now second all-time in the Apps’ record book. Senior Brian Graves competed in the 5,000-meter run for the first time this season and placed eighth with a time of 15:18.60.
Senior Darius Purcell and freshman Daryl Saunders finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively in the high jump. Purcell cleared 7-0.50 while Saunders cleared the 6-10.75 mark.
This week’s Southern Conference Field Athlete of the Week, Jared Stalling earned a sixth-place finish in the weight throw (59-5) and a eighth-place showing in the shot put (53-5).
The Mountaineers travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford/UAB/BSC Invite on Feb. 10-11.
Appalachian State women’s 4x400m relay team break ASU record at Penn State
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Appalachian State University women’s track and field posted six top-eight finishers at Penn State’s Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday.
Sophomore Breanna Alston ran a season-best 24.68 200-meter dash to take a third place finish and finished in sixth in the 60-meter dash (7.69).
Senior Asia Dunlap missed breaking ASU’s 400m record by 0.43 of a second to place seventh (56.76).
Last week Dunlap, Breahna Morrison, Shenita Martin, and Alston nearly missed breaking the 4x400-meter relay record but today the speedy four-some shattered the school record (3:49.39) by nearly two seconds.
Sarah Williamson ran a personal-best an Appalachian season-best 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:11.02 to take a eighth-place finish.
Freshman Chelsea Farr continued her strong rookie performance by clearing 12-9.50 in the pole vault to place runner-up and take the second spot in ASU’s record book, while Cassie Crawford cleared a season-best 12-1.50 for ninth-place.
Gayshawna Watkins threw a Mountaineer’s season-best 56-2.50 for a sixth place finish in the weight throw.
Erika Ivey grabbed an eighth-place finish (38-8.25) in the triple jump.
The Mountaineers travel to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford/UAB/BSC Invite on Feb. 10-11.
Wofford indoor track and field records four personal bests and break one school record at Kent Taylor Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four personal best and one school record headline the men’s and women’s track and field team’s performance at the Kent Taylor Invitational on the campus of the University of North Carolina Saturday morning.
Alissa Williams paced the women’s team for the second straight week with a 5:16.97 mile run good enough for eighth place in the field of 30, and for a Terrier school record. It is the second week in a row Williams has broken a school record in a meet.
Katie Kessler had the highest podium finish for the Terriers on the day with a third place finish in the 800m with a time of 2:21.30. Kathleen Woods had personal best and a tenth place finish in the shot put with a distance of 9.92m, while Sam Hughes ran a personal best 10:58.35 in the 3,000m and finished in 11th place.
Keenan Langley had a pair of 12th place finishes in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.91 and in the long jump with a distance of 4.31m, while Nicole Klasnic took 14th in the mile run with a time of 5:25.47.
Alyssa Burket and Andrea Kelsey both finished in 15th place. Burket ran in a 1:02.77 in the 400m dash, while Kelsey finished with a time of 11:08.37 in the 3,000m.
Emily Gothberg just missed the top 15 with a 17th place finish and a personal best time of 2:27.61 in the 800m.
On the men’s side, Andrew McCurry and Brian McCracken took 12th and 14th with distances of 11.28m and 10.51m respectively in the shot put.
Bryan Youman finished in 14th in the 60m dash, while Chase West crossed the finish line in with a time of 2:03.48 good enough for 15th place in the 800m.
Wofford will take to the track at the JDL Fast Track Meet on February 11 in Winston-Salem for its next meet
