GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNCG's women's tennis team stormed to its first victory of the season Saturday, sweeping through doubles and singles to take a 7-0 win over UNC Asheville at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
Annette Rios and Kayla Gammie got things going for the Spartans (1-2) with a win at No. 2 doubles, topping UNCA's Zoe Hamel and Devon Cavanaugh, 8-3. Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead clinched the point for the Spartans at No. 1, downing Emily McNall and Christine Boissevain by the same score.
Devon Sutherland and Stephanie Falcon made it a clean sweep at No. 3, picking up an 8-4 win over Jenna Dodge and Amryn Soldier.
In singles play, Sutherland polished off her 6-2, 6-1 win over Amie Cloer at No. 6 to make it 2-0 in UNCG's favor. Wilkins rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hamel at No. 1 before Falcon clinched the match at No. 5, topping Dodge, 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 3, Whitehead had to work a little extra for a 7-6 (10-8) win over Soldier in the first set before easing to a 6-0 win in the second set. Rios also had to go to a first-set tiebreaker against Boissevain at No. 4, winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Dilara Yurtkuran picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over McNall at No. 2.
The Bulldogs fell to 1-2 on the season.
UNCG has the next week off before hosting East Carolina at Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m.
Georgia Southern 6, Presbyterian 1
CLINTON, S.C. - The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Presbyterian College in Clinton on Saturday. Eight Eagles notched wins as the team won eight of nine total matches to come away with a 6-1 win.
"It was great to come away with our first win of the season," said Head Coach Amy Bonner. "It was a team effort and I was really proud of the way we showed up ready to play after suffering two tough losses last weekend. Our doubles play looked strong and we never let up in singles."
The Eagles (1-2) got on the board quickly by sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Alexis Prickett and Natalie Maffett got the win at No. 1 doubles, while Paola Garrido and Mimi Bollaci prevailed at No. 2 doubles. The team of Cameron Williams and Taylor Jones rounded off doubles play with an 8-3 win at #3 doubles.
The Eagles never let off the gas pedal when they transitioned to singles play. Williams notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles, while Prickett won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Garrido clinched the match victory for the Eagles with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, improving her record to 6-0 in singles and doubles play on the season. Joining the rest of the team in the win column were Allison Beeler at No. 5 singles and Caitlin Kitchen at No. 3 singles, winning by 7-6, 6-3 scores.
The Eagles will try to keep momentum on their side when they take the courts again on Sunday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. in Macon as the Eagles take on the Bears of Mercer.
Davidson 5, Gardner-Webb 2
Davidson 6, North Carolina A&T 1
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team made their 2012 home debut an impressive one, picking up 5-2 and 6-1 wins over Gardner-Webb and North Carolina A&T for their first two wins on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Knobloch Tennis Center.
Brites Moniz-Soares and Katharine Dicconson led the way, going a combined 8-0 on the afternoon in their two singles and two doubles matches for Davidson (2-3).
Moniz-Soares scored a 6-4, 7-5 win over Gardner-Webb's (0-1) Ioana Oprea at No. 2 and then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 1 vs. N.C. A&T (1-4). She improved to 3-2 on the season in singles action.
Dicconson was just as good, scoring a three-set victory (6-4, 5-7, 7-5) at No. 4 to start the day vs. the Runnin Bulldogs and then closed the afternoon out allowing just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Kenya Colbert of the Aggies.
The pair teamed up in doubles action for two wins to run their record to 3-0 on the season.
Frizzi Bschorer went a perfect 2-0 in singles, earning wins at No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. She opened the doubleheader with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph and then rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory for her fourth career singles win.
Also scoring singles wins on the afternoon was Catherine Wood, Nisha Crouser and Elise Held. Wood moved to 2-0 on the year with a 6-4, 6-7, 10-5 victory vs. Gardner-Webb, while Crouser had a 6-3, 6-3 win and Held earned a 6-4, 6-3 triumph in matches vs. the Aggies.
Freshman Blake Nickles scored her first career win in doubles play when she teamed with Bschorer at No. 3 vs. N.C. A&T for a 8-4 decision.
Stephani Synn also scored a doubles decision with Crouser vs. Gardner-Webb, 8-6, in helping the Wildcats earn the doubles point to open the match.
Davidson takes to the road for a Feb. 11 match against #60 Virginia Tech at 10 a.m.
Chattanooga 7, Belmont 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team posted its second consecutive sweep to start the spring season with a 7-0 win at Belmont Saturday night. The Lady Mocs logged five straight-set wins in singles action, improving to 2-0 overall.
Chattanooga took two of three doubles matches to open up with a 1-0 lead. Senior Emily Hangstefer and sophomore Alexa Flynn began with a quick 8-2 win at No. 1. Junior Jenna Nurik and freshman Kaylene Chadwell followed with an 8-2 win of their own at No. 2.
With the point decided the third match went the distance. Belmont's Catherine Holliday and Nikki Maciel scored an 8-7 win over UTC seniors Charlotte Bossy and Shaina Singh. Holliday and Maciel won the final tiebreaker 7-4.
Teams were playing on four courts, which may have slowed the match, but not the Lady Mocs. UTC only dropped five total games in the first sets of matches 1-4. Chadwell was first off the court, closing out Maciel (6-1, 6-1) at No. 2. Hangstefer was next with a (6-0, 6-4) win over Laura Stack at No. 4. She improved to 8-1 in singles, 2-0 in spring action.
Flynn clinched the match with her (6-3, 6-3) win over Carolyn Caire at No. 3. Nurik upped her singles mark to 10-3 with a (6-2, 6-3) win over Fabiana Mersan at No. 1.
Bossy dropped just two games in her win at No. 6 while Singh was pushed to a third set at No. 5. With the match decided, Singh and Holliday played a 10-point super-tiebreaker. Singh won that 10-7 and completed the sweep for Chattanooga.
UTC has three more matches on this road swing with a visit to Murray, Ky., next weekend. The Lady Mocs will face Evansville on a neutral court on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 2:00 p.m. (E.S.T.). They will then face Murray State on Sunday, Feb. 12, also at 2:00 p.m. After a trip to Middle Tennessee on Feb. 23, Chattanooga's next home match will be against Kennesaw State on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 1:00 p.m. on the UTC Tennis Courts.
