SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Western Carolina's Trey Sumler has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games played February 21-25 the league office announced Monday (Feb. 27). Sumler averaged 19.5 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as Western Carolina closed the regular season with wins over Samford (79-77) and Appalachian State (83-75) last week.
Sumler opened the week with a double-double as he tallied 12 points and ten assists as the Catamounts held off Samford at home. The sophomore added eight rebounds and made four free throws in the closing moments of the win over the Bulldogs. Saturday afternoon against Appalachian State, Sumler poured in a career-high 27 points to go with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, while playing 39 minutes against the Mountaineers.
The Catamounts (14-17, 8-10) closed the regular season on a four-game winning streak and earned the No. 3 seed in the North Division for this week's Southern Conference tournament in Asheville, N.C. Western Carolina will face The Citadel Friday at 2:00 p.m. The tournament begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday when College of Charleston faces Appalachian State and concludes with the championship next Monday (March 5) at 9:00 p.m.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State's Andre Williamson, College of Charleston's Trent Wiedeman, The Citadel's Mike Groselle, Davidson's De'Mon Brooks, Elon's Lucas Troutman, Furman's Brandon Sebirumbi, Georgia Southern's Eric Ferguson, Samford's Drew Windler, Chattanooga's Jahmal Burroughs, and Wofford's Brad Loesing.
