Elon Paces SoCon Schools at Kiawah Island

Mayer Leads Elon Women's Golf on Day One at Kiawah Island

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Virginia Mayer shot a two-over 74 to pace the Elon women's golf team to a second-place standing after day one of the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate tournament on Sunday. The Phoenix ended its first 18 holes with a score of 303 (+15).

Mayer, who sits in a tie for 10th individually, began the day on the back nine where she recorded four birdies to sit a -4 at the turn. She shot a +6 on the front nine to finish with the 74 (+2) after one round.

One stroke back in a tie for 14th was Martyna Mierzwa who was -1 after beginning on the back nine. She finished her round with two birdies and a 75 (+3). Lauren Lebak also resides in the top 20 after her round of 76 (+4) has her tied for 19th in the field of 179. Lebak posted birdies on both holes 16 and eight.

Diana Davis is only two strokes back with a 78 (+6), but is tied for 42nd. Davis had one birdie. Kristi Ingram was the final Elon golfer. She is tied for 73rd after shooting an 80 (+8) on day one.

Thanks to rounds of 69 and 70 by two of its players, Augusta State holds the top spot on the leaderboard with a two-under 286.

Just behind Elon in the 33-team field is Campbell. The Fighting Camels, rated 54th nationally, shot a 306 to sit third. UNCG (#78 in the country) and Jacksonville State are tied for fourth with a 307 with two rounds to play.

Chattanooga, ranked 65th in the nation, is in a tie for sixth with a 309 while host and 89th rated College of Charleston is tied for 10th with a 313. Western Carolina is tied for 18th at 317 while The Citadel is 33rd with a mark of 346.

Two other top-100 teams are in the field - 75th rated Middle Tennessee State and 81st ranked Longwood.

 

Spartans off to strong start at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -UNCG women's golf team is tied for fourth after firing an opening round 307 at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic, which opened play Sunday at Cougar Point.

Playing in their first tournament of the spring, the Spartans trail overall team leader August State (286) by 21-strokes in the 33-team field. The Spartans are tied with Jacksonville State, and also follow Elon (303) and Campbell (306) in the standings.

Freshman Fanny Cnops leads the Spartans through the first 18 holes, shooting even par 72 on Sunday, which has her tied for fourth with two rounds remaining. Cnops enjoyed two birdies, and had just two bogeys, including one on the par-4 18th.

Augusta State's Natalie Willie leads the tournament after shooting 3-under par 69.

UNCG's Courtney Taylor and Begona Sarabia are tied for 29th after shooting 77, while Ana Lucia Martinez is tied for 93rd with an 81. Berglind Bjornsdottir shot 82 and is tied for 109th.

Second round action begins Monday at 8:30 a.m., when UNCG will play the Oak Point course.

Chattanooga Tied for 6th Through 18 at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic
Freshman Mette Kryger is tied for seventh, four shots out of the lead

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Freshman Mette Kryger (Nivaa, Denmark) led the Chattanooga Mocs with a 73 (+1) in the first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic Sunday on Cougar Point Golf Course. Kryger paced the Mocs to a tie for sixth with Arkansas-Little Rock shooting 309 as a team.

Kryger tied her season-best with her 73 today. She is tied for seventh, four shots behind the leader, Natalie Wille of Augusta State, who shot three-under par 69. Kryger birdied two of her first three holes and made the turn at one under. She had four birdies and nine pars on her card.

Senior Maria Juliana Loza (Bucaramanga, Colombia) is tied for 29th at five over, 77. She was two shots better than Jordan Britt (Chattanooga, Tenn.) who is tied for 57th with a 79. Yushira Budhram (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Marion Duvernay (Publier, France) rounded out the team scoring with rounds of 80 and 82, respectively.

Sophomore Sophie Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) saw her first action with the Mocs shooting 77, tying Loza in 29th. She transferred to Chattanooga from Barry at the semester break.

Augusta State is the event leader by 17 shots after a two-under par tally of 286. Elon is second at 303, while Campbell made it around in 306 strokes standing in third.

Wille leads teammate Casey Kennedy by one shot at 70. A quartet of golfers is tied for third at 72, one shot ahead of Kryger and two others.

Chattanooga returns to the course for round two of three in the morning. It switches to Oak Point Golf Club. Live scoring of the round can be found on the GoMocs.com women's golf schedule page.

Cougars Open Play in 2012 Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's golf team opened with a 25-over 319 and are tied for 10th place after the first day of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic.

"First off, congratulations to Augusta State," CofC Head Coach Jamie Futrell said. "That was an incredible round under the conditions we played under today. I thought we played steady. We have to make more putts. If we do that, we will be fine for the rest of the tournament. It was of the windiest days we have played in the history of this tournament."

Augusta State was the only team to shoot under-par as they shot a 2-under 286.

Junior Katharina Boehm led the Cougars with a 2-over 74 and is tied for 10th place individually. Boehm had five birdies in her round.

Fellow junior Vanessa Koechli played steady for most of the round of the Cougars as she fired a 7-over 79 and is tied for 57th place.

WCU Women's Golf Tied for 17th after Opening Round at Kiawah Island
Katy Kile leads Catamounts after Sunday's 18 holes

Kiawah Island, S.C. - Western Carolina carded an opening round 317 to stand tied in a three-way tie with the Univ. of Richmond and Newberry College for 17th at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the Oak Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses.

The second round begins with tee times beginning at 9:30 am on Monday morning with the final round slated or Tuesday morning slated for a shotgun start at 8:45 am.

With three golfers inside the top four, Augusta State combined to shoot two-under, 286, to lead the 33-team field by 17 strokes. Elon is second after shooting 303 on Sunday, followed by Campbell (306) in third while UNCG and Jacksonville State tied for fourth with identical scores of 307 to round out the top five teams.

Natalie Wille from Augusta State carded four birdies against one bogey for a 69 to lead second-place teammate Casey Kennedy (70) and the 179-golfer field.

Freshman Katy Kile carded a four-over, 76, in Sunday's opening round to lead the Catamounts in an individual tie for 19th place overall. Opening on the back nine, Kile opened round with a birdie on the par-5 11th to move to one under. However, five bogies on her next seven holes moved her to four-over at the turn. The Montgomery, Texas, native dropped to five-over twice on the front nine, but birdies on the par-4 fourth and par-4 seventh left her at four-over for the round.

Seniors Blaire Minter and Rachel Nelson are tied for 73rd entering the second round. Minter made the turn at two-over on the back, but bogies on six of the front nine holes left her at eight-over, 80. Nelson also made the turn at two-over, countering three bogies with a birdie on the par-4 13th. She finished the opening round with four bogies and a double on the front nine to stand tied with her classmate.

Rounding out WCU's opening round scores were freshman Maria Kjelldorff one-stroke in arrears at nine-over, 81, to stand tied at 93rd and Sofie Kvarnstrom in a tie for 109th at 10-over, 82.

Baumgartner Opens Strong at Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. - Senior Bree Baumgartner fired with an opening round 82 and tied for 109th place at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic on Sunday afternoon. She paced a Citadel golf team that currently stands in 33rd place at the tournament with a team score of 346 (+58).

Baumgartner is one of 14 players deadlocked for 109th and is followed by Bulldog teammates Erica Pellegrini (85), Devin Lowe (87), Alanna-Jean Keith (92) and Kellie Anderson (95).

Augusta State (286) took the early lead in the team competition, led by Natalie Willie (69), Casey Kennedy (70) and Christine Duschek-Hansen (72), who hold down the top three spots on the leaderboard. Following Augusta State at the top of the team competition is Elon (303), Campbell (306), UNC Greensboro (307) and Jacksonville State (307) round out the top five teams after day one of competition.

The tournament continues on Monday at 8:45 a.m. followed by a shotgun start in the final round on Tuesday.
