Furman 7, Boston University 0

CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - The Furman women's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-0 win over Boston University Sunday morning in Cambridge, Mass.

The Paladins jumped out to an early lead, winning two out of three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Sophomore Margaret Boyette and freshman Kelly Sullivan defeated Vivien Laszloffy and Jessi Linero, 8-4, at number two, and junior Michele Stanford and freshman Amanda Murray combined for an 8-3 victory over Kendal Drake and Leonie-Charlotte Athanasiadis in the third doubles match-up. The Terriers got their lone win of the day at number one doubles, where Monika Mical and Sami Lieb defeated the duo of junior Lauren Kline and freshman Alex Moreno-Kaste, 8-7(5).

"I was reallly pleased with the way we battled after a tough match yesterday," said Furman head coach Debbie Southern following the win. "We came out and played really well in singles today."

Furman swept the singles matches, as Kline beat Laszloffy, 6-1, 6-2, in the top match, and Stanford defeated Athanasiadis, 6-2, 6-4, at number two. In the third singles contest, Boyette posted a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Mical, and Oudin notched a 6-2, 6-0 win over Linero in the fourth-seed match. Moreno-Kaste defeated Lieb, 6-0, 6-3, in the fifth singles match-up, while Murray completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Petra Santini at number six.

Furman (3-5) will continue its six-match road swing when the team travels to Los Angeles March 7-10. The Paladins will take on UC Irvine March 7 at 4:30 p.m. then play at Cal State Northridge March 9 at 2 p.m. Furman wraps up the trip at Loyola Marymount March 10 at 2 p.m.


Coastal Carolina 5, Wofford 2

CONWAY, S.C. - The Wofford College women's tennis team fell to Coastal Carolina by a 5-2 score Sunday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-4 overall, while the Chanticleers improve to 5-0 on the season.

Coastal Carolina earned an early 1-0 advantage, sweeping through doubles play to claim the doubles point.

In singles play, Guinn Garcia fell behind early, but battled back to defeat Katie Fosnacht (1-6, 6-1, 7-6(6)) at the No. 4 position, and Othilia Lindqvist downed Kourtney Kowal (7-6(3), 6-3) at the No. 5 position to give Wofford two singles victories. Coastal Carolina took the remaining four matches to seal the overall match victory.

The Terriers return to action Thursday afternoon, hosting Charlotte at 2:00 p.m. at the Reeves Tennis Center.

 
Presbyterian 6, Western Carolina 1

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -  Presbyterian (2-5) defeated Western Carolina (0-4) in women's tennis action Sunday afternoon, 6-1, at the Catamount Athletic Complex.  Junior Karen Jiménez picked up her third straight victory to pick up the lone point for the Catamounts.

Presbyterian set the tone early by taking the doubles point with an 8-0 win over Megan McLinden and Katie Barry. The No. 1 doubles match was a tough match between Western Carolina's Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz and Karen Jiménez and PC's Paige Oelke and Patricia Alves. The two pairs battled throughout with Oelke and Alves coming out on top with an 8-6 win.

In singles, Karen Jiménez faced Cara Caruso of the Blue Hose in the No. 2 spot. Jiménez defeated Caruso with a 6-2, 6-1 win. The win marks the third straight for Jiménez.

In the No. 3 match featuring WCU's Megan McLinden and Presbyterian's Greer Ransom, the two fought with a back and forth first set between the two. Ransom took the first set needing a tiebreaker game to win it 7-5. Ransom took the second set with a little more ease, winning 6-1. Paige Oelke defeated Ainhoa Iglesias Díaz 6-4, 6-1.

The Catamounts open up Southern Conference action this week as WCU travels to Statesboro, Ga., for its first conference match against Georgia Southern on Thursday. The match is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
