Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel senior outfielder Nick Orvin is one of 30 NCAA baseball student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award, it was announced on Thursday afternoon. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.
Orvin has been named to the Dean's List every semester, earning the honor seven times for holding a GPA of over 3.25 or higher. He maintains a 3.8 overall GPA in Health and Wellness and was a 2011 Capital One Academic All-District 3 second team selection.
A two-time All-Southern Conference selection following his sophomore and junior seasons, Orvin was also a SoCon All-Freshman performer in 2009. Last season, he led the team in hits, runs, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage, walks, at-bats and stolen bases and was second on the team in batting average and doubles. He was in the top-10 in the SoCon in home runs and stolen bases while hitting .359 in league games. Orvin entered the career top-10 at The Citadel in runs scored with 182 heading into his senior season.
Lowe's, an official Corporate Partner of the NCAA, will announce the Senior CLASS Award® winner during the 2012 NCAA College World Series, which will be held June 15-26 in Omaha.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I head coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
