Appalachian State's Downs Named Student-Athlete of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State’s Carter Downs has been named the Southern Conference’s Student-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today.

Downs posted a 2-0 week as the Mountaineers won both of their duals last week to capture the Southern Conference Championship after an undefeated 6-0 conference slate. It was the first time Appalachian State went undefeated in conference action since the 2002-03 season.

The senior from Tequesta, Fla., fell a single point shy of bonus points, as he recorded a 11-5 decision over Duke’s Randy Roden. He also picked up a 12-5 decision following an 11-3 victory over Davidson’s Ian Solcz. Down’s performance helped seal a 39-10 win over the Wildcats and remain perfect in the league.

Downs maintains a 3.79 GPA in Political Science.

Other nominees included College of Charleston’s Samantha Maddox, The Citadel’s Justin Mackert, Davidson’s Brites Moniz-Soares, Elon’s Dylan Clark, UNCG’s Lucy Dougherty and Chattanooga’s Michelle Fuzzard.
