Davidson 5, USC Upstate 2

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's tennis team started its five-match homestand in winning style, scoring a 5-2 win over visiting USC Upstate on Friday night in Knobloch Tennis Center.

Three Wildcats finished perfect on the night, picking up a doubles and singles win to carry Davidson (3-4) to the three-point team win.

Davidson started the match vs. the Spartans (2-3) by taking the doubles point with a pair of 8-4 wins at No. 2 and 3 positions. Katharine Dicconson and Brites Moniz-Soares ran their record to a team-best 4-1 with a win at No. 2, while Catherine Wood and Frizzi Bschorer scored their first win of the season as a team.

Dicconson, Moniz-Soares and Wood each captured singles wins all in straight sets as Davidson took spots 2-5 for the win. Dicconson picked up her second win of the season at No. 4 with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.

Moniz-Soares improved to 4-3 with a strong 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2, while Wood ran her record to 3-1 after a 6-1, 7-5 triumph at No. 5.

Clinching the match for the 'Cats was Nisha Crouser when she scored a three-set win at No. 3 with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Julie Bell. The win ran Crouser's early season singles record to 3-2.

Davidson turns around and will play Campbell tomorrow, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. in a non-conference match.


College of Charleston 4, Iowa State 3

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Freshman Samantha Maddox clinched the deciding match point as the College of Charleston women's tennis team rolled to a 4-3 decision over Iowa State on Friday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.

With the score tied at 3-all, it would come down to the last match standing between Maddox and Iowa State's Meghan Cassens at No. 4 singles. After splitting sets, Maddox gave up only one game in the final third set, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, to seal the victory for the Cougars (3-2), who have now won two in a row.

After losing the doubles point, the Cyclones (0-6) battled back from a 3-0 deficit beginning with a straight-set win from Ksenia Pronina over CofC sophomore Kelly Kambourelis, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 line, which shifted the momentum. Iowa State's Simona Cacciuttolo followed with a straight-set victory over junior Caroline Newman at No. 3 and Emma Waites beat junior Olivia McMillan in straight sets at No. 6, to set the stage for the clincher.

The Cougars had built the early cushion courtesy of freshman Jenny Falcone, who handily defeated Jenna Langhorst, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, and junior Christin Newman, who topped Maria Macedo by the same count, at the top of the order.

"Iowa State is a very talented team that will do well in the Big 12 Conference this year," CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. "Their team showed great resolve in coming back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match at 3-all. Sam Maddox closed out the match for us, winning 6-1 in the third set, earning her third-consecutive victory along with fellow freshman Jenny Falcone. They continue to improve each match."

The Cougars cancelled their match against Stetson which was scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19 at the Live To Play Tennis Center in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., due to forecasted weather conditions.

 
Kennesaw State 5, Wofford 2

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision Friday afternoon to Kennesaw State at the Reeves Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-2 on the season, while the Owls improve to 4-2 overall.

Wofford claimed an early 1-0 advantage on the strength of sweeping doubles play. The pairing of Othilia Lindqvist and Sarah Evans defeated Vera Shkundina/Alexandra Apostu (8-6) at the No. 1 position, which was quickly followed by the duo of Lucy Schermerhorn and Audrey Coventry defeating Therese Lagerkvist and Tamara Plocher (8-6) at the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point. The team of Julia Paulson and Samantha Sullivan downed Virginie Stein and Jana Hueckinghaus (8-5) at the No. 2 spot to complete the sweep.

Kennesaw State fought back in singles action, taking five of the six matches to claim the overall victory. At the No. 4 position, Othilia Lindqvist battled back after dropping the first set to Jana Hueckinghaus, taking the next two sets to earn the lone singles win for the Terriers (5-7, 7-5, 10-2).

The Terriers will quickly turn around for their next match, as the squad hits the road to take on Charleston Southern tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Charleston, S.C.
