SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Georgia Southern's Paula Garrido has been named the Southern Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for all matches played through February 12. Garrido is a perfect 8-0 in both singles and doubles play while the Eagles are 2-2 through their first four matches. The Player of the Week selection is made by the conference office.
Garrido has won three of her four singles matches in straight sets at the top position. She was forced to three sets in knocking off Charleston Southern's Olga Mahkova (1-6, 6-4, 10-6), the two-time Big South Player of the Year. Garrido then earned straight-set wins over Coastal Carolina's Miki Bunea (6-1, 6-4), Presbyterian's Paige Oelke (6-3, 6-2) and Mercer's Jennifer Lada (6-1, 6-4).
Paired with Caitlin Kitchen, the Vigo, Spain native has also posted an unblemished mark at No. 2 doubles. Their closest match in doubles play was an 8-7 (8-6) win over Charleston Southern's Yvonne Hubler and Alexandra Walters.
Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State's Ellie Linsell, College of Charleston's Kelly Kambourelis, Davidson's Brites Moniz-Soares, Elon's Jordan Johnston, Furman's Margaret Boyette, UNCG's Niltooli Wilkins, Samford's Madelie Janse Van Rensburg, Chattanooga's Shaina Singh, Western Carolina's Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz and Wofford's Julia Paulson.
