Hamilton, 4x400-meter relay pace Appalachian State women at Vulcan Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Solid performances by Amanda Hamilton and the 4x400-meter relay team leads Appalachian State University women’s track and field at the Vulcan Invitational, hosted by Samford, UAB and BSC, on Friday and Saturday.

The junior from Cary, N.C., Hamilton ran the Mountaineers’ fifth fastest 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:53.69 to place third, and also ran the seventh fastest mile in ASU’s history with a mark of 5:01.90. Hannah Orders ran the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:09.77  good for 11th-place finish.

In the 200-meter dash, Breanna Alston finished in seventh with a time of 25.00, while D’Shawrna McLucasearned an 11th-place finish (25.36).

A week after breaking the school record Alston, Asia Dunlap, Breahna Morrison and Shenita Martin posted a time of 3:54.97 in the 4x400-meter relay to place fourth.

In the high jump, Shaquiela Robinson cleared 5-5 good for seventh-place while freshman Janet Watson finished in 11th-place by clearing 5-3.

Tatyana Bryant rounds out Appalachian’s top-performers with a personal-best 18-6.5 for fifth-place in the long jump.

The Mountaineers will compete on Friday in Boone for the Appalachian Pre-Conference Open Meet at 3 p.m. 

Moen, Purcell pace Appalachian State men at Vulcan Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – First-place performances by Chris Moen in the mile and Darius Purcell in the high jump lead Appalachian State University men’s track and field on Friday and Saturday at the Vulcan Invitational hosted by Samford, UAB and BSC.

The senior from Rockville, Md., Moen ran a season-best time of 4:10.16 to claim the mile title, and also finished eighth in the 800-meters (1:55.61).

In the 3,000-meter run, Will Raby earned a seventh-place finish (8:26.63) while Sean Soderman crossed the finish line in 10th (8:31.22).

Freshman Stanley Broaden finished in eighth with a 8.24 mark in the 60-meter hurdles, while senior AJ Dohanic finished in 10th-place (8.30) after posting a personal-best time of 8.17 in the preliminaries.

Landon Powell finished in 11th-place with a time of 6.98 in the 60-meter dash.

Tyler Combs, Broaden, Daryl Saunders, David Riddleberger posted a time of 3:22.95 in the 4x400-meter relay to claim a seventh-place finish.

The dynamic high jump duo of Purcell and Saunders continue to have spectacular seasons.  Purcell cleared 7-00.25 to place first while Saunders earned a fourth-place finish (6-8.75).

Sophomore Jamal Tiller rounded out the Mountaineers top-performers with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (48-11.75).

The Mountaineers will compete on Friday in Boone, N.C. for the Appalachian Pre-Conference Open Meet at 3 p.m. 

The Citadel shattered four school records at Tiger Paw Invitational
Clemson, S.C. – The Bulldog track and field team continued their historic season on Friday as they shattered four more school and freshmen records during day one of the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. 

Junior Brunson Miller recorded a time of 63.80 in the 500, crushing Alex Prince's 8-year-old record of 65.37. Miller's impressive mark was just shy of the facility record (63.50) set last year by Johnson C. Smith University's Leford Green. Freshman Keith Lemay entered the top 10 list in the same event with a time 67.67, good for fifth all-time.

In the women's 300, freshman Alexandria Moss broke Latrice Sales' record time of 42.57 when she posted a time of 42.42. Her school record did not last long as junior teammate Micah Wessinger topped Moss with a time of 42.37 before Tanisha Bethel would better both of them, ultimately capturing the school and freshman record in the event with a time of 42.27.

Bethel would continue her monumental rookie season in the 60, recording a freshman record time of 8.02. The Hanahan, S.C., native also moved into number two all-time in the event.
Senior captain Erinn Carter moved from the fifth to second spot on the all-time list in the 500 with a time of 1:21.13, while sophomore Vanessa Hope ran her way into the top ten with a time of 1:23.81, good for sixth all-time.

The Bulldog women continued their notable day in the distance and field events as Danielle McKee posted a time of 3:06.00 in the 1,000 to better her number two all-time mark, while sophomore teammate Nicole Levermann recorded a personal-best in the 60 high hurdles with a third-ranked time of 9.48. The New Braunfels, Texas, native also high jumped a season-best 5'3.00".

Kasandra Polson and Andriana Love recorded personal bests in the weight throw with heaves measured at 47'4.5" (fourth all-time) and 42'11.00" (sixth all-time), respectively.
In the men's 300, Jamaal Brantley and Daniel Till etched their place in history as the fifth and seventh best in the event, respectively. Brantley recorded a time of 36.25, while Till posted a time of 36.34, narrowly missing his personal best.

Jordan Ashley entered the top 10 list in the 1,000 as he ran a time of 2:34.72, good for third place all-time, while freshman teammate Michael Brewer landed on the list in the number seven spot with a time of 2:35.80.

Senior Quintin Turner improved on last week's season-best mark in the weight throw, heaving the load two feet further with a mark of 52'3.75", while Dylan Gidado chucked the weight 47'4.5".

College of Charleston has strong outing at Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. - The College of Charleston women's track & field team wrapped up competition at the 2012 Tiger Paw Invitational Saturday at Clemson.

The distance medley relay team made up of Kristen Wolfe, Alyssa Kowolenko, Dana Walsh and Dena O'Brien finished third in 12:21.68, the third fastest time in school history.

Jelain McArthur competed well in the triple jump as she jumped 11.03 meters, the sixth best mark in school history.

Freshman Hayley McMahon finished in 17th place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:24.09. Fellow freshman Tiffany Sisk finished 11th in the shot put with a heave of 12.52 meters.

Junior Chelsea Taylor finished ninth-place in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.31 meters.
In the 400-meter dash senior Alyssa D'Orazio ran 1:00.44, the ninth fastest time in school history. D'Orazio placed 23rd in the race. Her teammates, senior Laura Call finished 28th in the race with a time of 1:01.45.

Next up for the Cougars is the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship, hosted by Samford in Birmingham, Ala.

Davidson men break more school records at Valentine Invitational, JDL Fast Track Invitational
BOSTON/WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– Senior Ryan Hopkins and junior Demetrios Pagonis continued rewriting the Davidson indoor men’s track and field record books Saturday, as both Wildcat runners bested the previous school standards in the 5000-meter run at the Valentine Invitational in the Boston University Track and Tennis Center. Sophomores Andrew Lantz and Grayam Sailor-Tynes broke the school mile record at the JDL Fast Track Invitational hosted by Wake Forest.
 
Of the 73 runners that competed in the 5000m on BU's banked track, Hopkins placed second overall in 14 minutes, 22.35 seconds and Pagonis was fifth in 14:25.02. Dartmouth’s Ethan Shaw was first in 14:16.17.
 
Pagonis had run the fastest-ever Davidson indoor 5000m just two weeks ago in 14:34.84 at the season opening Niswonger Invitational on East Tennesee State’s oversize track. Tom Divinnie set Davidson’s regulation-sized (200m) track standard of 14:36.29 at the Southern Conference Championships in 2010 on Clemson’s flat track.
 
Hopkins’ previous best in the indoor 5000m was 14:46.89.
 
The rest of the Davidson men’s track and field team competed at the Fast Track Invitational, where Lantz set a new mile record of 4:12.49 to place third. Classmate Sailor-Tynes also bested the previous standard set by Tom Divinnie (4:15.48) in 2010 with a sixth-place finish in 4:14.48.
 
The Davidson distance medley relay team of Sal de Guidice, Wesley Laytham, Nate Faubion and Will Mitchell turned in a school all-time top-10 best performance of 10:42.04 to win the event.
 
Senior Taylor Martin led Davidson in the 200-meter dash in 23.23 seconds to earn a place on Davidson’s all-time top-10 performers list in the event.
 
Sophomore Michael Lorentsen placed eighth in the pole vault in 13-5 ¼ (4.10m), while classmate Stewart Dalton led Davidson in the long jump 20-10 (6.35m) and 60-meter dash (7.31).
 
Davidson will next compete at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships Feb. 23-24 in Birmingham, Ala.

Davidson women place three in the top-10 at JDL Fast Track Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Davidson women’s indoor track and field team put three runners in the top-10 of their individual races at the JDL Fast Track Invitational host by Wake Forest on Saturday.

Presley Parkes led the Wildcats with a third place finish in the Mile run when she clocked in at 5:09.06. Maggie Rickard was 23rd in the same event with a time of 5:44.05.

In the 5000 Meter run, Erin Osment and Manya Swick were in the top-10. Osment finished with a time of 18:11.84 to earn a fifth place finish, while Swick crossed the line in sixth with a time of 18:27.26. Three other Wildcats also competed in the event, all finishing inside the top-20. Megan Mavity was 13th on a time of 19:13.77, while Alexandra Horst (19:31.07) and Chelsea Gordon (19:51.16) came in right behind Mavity with 16th and 19th places, respectively.

Ali Cobb, Lauren Carter and Annamarie Armistead each ran in the 3000 Meter, finishing 30th, 33rd and 36th. Cobb had the best finish, 30th, and time at 10:58.48.

Other Wildcat runners on the day were Ashley Paige, who ran in the 400 Meter (34th- 1:08.81), Grace Watt and Brooke Senken,  who each competed in the 800 Meter run. Watt finished 21st at a time of 2:24.37 and Senken was 38th on a time of 2:29.20.

In the field events, Molly Marshall came in 13th in the Pole Vault with a vault of 2.75 meters. Also Gracie Gordon was in the long jump and picked up a 15th place finish on a jump of 4.92 meters.

Davidson wraps up the indoor track and field season with a trip to the Southern Conference Tournament, Feb. 23-24.

Elon’s Oram sets new school record at JDL Fast Track Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Allyson Oram set a new school record in the 5,000-meter run today, Feb. 11, as several Elon track and field distance runners competed in the JDL Fast Track Invitational.
 
Oram clocked a time of 17:40.32, breaking the two-year record by almost three seconds and finishing first in the event. Morgan Denecke and Haylee Dawe took third and fourth with times of 17:45.94 and 17:59.11, respectively. Katelyn O’Dunne rounded out the Phoenix runners in the 5,000m in 17th with a time of 19:46.47.
 
Julie Hart competed in the one-mile run, finishing ninth with a time of 5:20.68. In the 3,000-meter run, Emily Tryon (10:17.15) took fourth, while Kaitlin Stober (11:09.75) claimed 32nd.
 
The Elon track and field team will compete on Friday, Feb. 17 – Saturday, Feb. 18 in the Virginia Tech Challenge.
 
Furman has strong outing at Tiger Paw Invitational
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Senior Erin Barker placed second with a time of 9:59.82 in the 3,000m to lead the Furman indoor track and field teams Saturday in the final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C.  

Senior Lee Gilmer paced the Furman men's team, placing fourth in the 800m after posting a time of 1:55.27.  Two Paladins placed among the top-10 in the men's 3,000m, as sophomore Jack Klecker took fifth place with a time of 8:50.34, and senior Chris Caldwell finished sixth after turning in a time of 9:01.88.  

Both Paladin DMR teams finished in the top-10.  The men's team of junior Wilkerson Given, junior Raul Rodriquez, sophomore Tyler Greathouse, and senior Jay Miller placed third with a time of 10:20.30, and the women's team of sophomore Catherine Burton, senior Erin McChristian, freshman Hannah Schilpp, and senior Brooke Mosteller took eighth place with a time of 12:55.39.

The Paladins will compete at the Southern Conference Championships in Birmingham, Ala., February 23-24.

Georgia Southern placed two in the top-10 at Tiger Paw Invitational
Clemson, S.C. – The Eagles finished day two of the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday evening. Sara Curry and Sara Hall lead GSU with top-ten finishes in the 3000 Meter and Shot Put, respectively. Curry placed tenth in the 3000 Meter with a time of 10:37.56. Hall finished tenth in the Shot Put with a throw of 12.57. The Shot Put also saw Alexis Jacobs finish 19thand Charnelle Wray 25th with throws of 11.63 and 10.97 respectively. 

Millicent Brooks-Millender took 15th in the Triple Jump with a score of 10.70 finishing the field events for the day.

Talisha Rice finished the 800 in 24th(2:26.03) followed by Azura Robillard in 26th (2:26.89). In the 400, Cherrelle King placed 17th (59.64) and Kimberly Thomas took 18th (1:00.02). 

The 4x400 Relay started the day off with a fourth place finish (3:57.43), continuing their success this season. 

The Eagles will be back on the track in two weeks, when they head to Birmingham for the SoCon Indoor Championships. 

UNCG breaks school records at Spire Invitationa, JDL Fast Track Invitational
GENEVA, Ohio and WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – UNCG's Paul Chelimo and Ashley Schnell each set new school records in the mile at the Spire Invitational, while Ginny Cronley did the same in the 5,000 meters at the Fast Track College Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Chelimo won the mile race in a time of 4:02.80. That time broke his own school record he set earlier this season by almost eight seconds.

Joey Thompson also had a good showing in the 3,000 meters as he ran an 8:08.59. That time set a new personal-best by seven seconds and is the second fastest time in school history.

Schnell came in third place in the women's mile at the Spire Invitational with a time of 4:41.08. Her time broke the school record she set a few weeks ago at the Hokie Invitational by almost eight seconds.

Cronley, running at the Fast Track College Invitational, shattered the old school record in the 5,000 meters. She earned runner-up honors after running a 17:42.10 to set a new school record by 35 seconds that was set six years ago by Heidi Pinkerton.

Kerry Hartman also had a nice day at the Spire Invitational as she ran a 9:41.30 in the 3,000 meters to set a new personal-best time by 32 seconds.

The Spartans will return to action on Feb. 23 at the SoCon Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. 

Samford sets new school records at Vulcan Invitational
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford track wrapped up the second and final day of the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday. The day's action was highlighted by new school records, set by Emily Allen in the women's weight throw and Marie Demedicis in the women's 400-meter dash.

Allen, who already held the school record, improved the mark Saturday finishing 11th with a best toss of 51-11 (15.82m) coming in her third and final attempt. This beats her previous record of 51-3 (15.62m), set at this season's Auburn Invitational. Her counterpart in the men's competition, Kyle Kirby, won with a best toss of 64-1.75 (19.55m).

Demedicis, a Birmingham native, has had a stellar start to her freshman campaign at Samford, and Saturday's school record is the latest achievement. She finished seventh in Saturday's competition, crossing the line in 56.91. This is the first time under 57 seconds in Samford history and puts her ahead of the previous record of 57.13, set in 2008 by Ashley Flowers. Jessica Watson (59.00) and Madeline Cross (1:00.14) also earned new PRs in the event, and they now sit in seventh and ninth all-time at Samford, respectively.

Another newcomer on Samford's middle distance squad, Anna Laura Irvine, put together a solid race in the 800 meters. She placed second in 2:13.70, which is a new PR and propels her to third all-time at Samford. Teammate Chelsea Treadway also earned a new PR in the event, placing 11th in 2:16.87 which places her in tenth all-time on the Samford performance list.

In the men's races, Alex Richter was the highest-placing Bulldog in the men's 200-meter dash. He cruised to a 16th-place finish in 22.15, a new PR that moves him to second in the Samford record books. Two Bulldogs in the 3,000 meters set new personal bests, led by Layton Dorsett in 21st (8:44.55) with James Graham hot on his heels in 22nd (8:47.12). The two times rank fourth and fifth all-time at Samford, respectively. In the 60-meter dash finals, Justin Emerson placed eighth in 6.91 and in the 60-meter hurdles, Cavan Corcoran placed 12th (8.34). 

School record holder Claire Goodson finished second in Saturday's pole vault as the highest collegiate finisher in the field. Her highest clearance of the day was 12-7.5 (3.85m), as she tried but failed to clear 13-1.5 (4.00m). Ashley Cope tied a personal best in the vault and was not far behind in fourth (12-1.5, 3.70m). Cope also competed in Saturday's 60-meter hurdle finals (16th, 9.10) along with Julie McDonald (7th, 8.73).

Samford will not compete next weekend, as they will be preparing for the 2012 SoCon Indoor Track and Field Championships beginning on Thursday, Feb. 23. Samford will serve as host for the event, with events taking place over two days at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Chattanooga’s Berry wins men’s 3,000-meter at Valentine Invitational
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior Chris Berry took first in the men's 3000 meter run at the Valentine Invitational at the Murphy Center on the campus of Middle Tennessee.

Berry ran the event in a time of 8:32.22, better than two seconds ahead of Western Kentucky's Kyle Chettleburgh. Junior Lucas Cotter finished second in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 1:55.21, a PR, and just .32 seconds off the top place pace set by host Middle Tennessee's Justus David. Sophomore Drew Austell was eighth in the event with a time of 1:59.99.

Junior Kathryn Stuart set a PR in the women's Mile with a time of 5:15.31, edging her previous best time and placing fourth in the event. Also fourth for the women was sophomore Amanda Sumner in the women's 800 meter with a time of 2:17.55, just over one second behind the winning time of 2:16.19 set by MTSU's Amber Jackson. Sophomore Gabby Cader was fourth in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.26.

Senior Tara Gietema finished sixth in the women's Mile with a time of 5:21.65 and junior Morgan Buchanan was 11th in the event. Senior Emmanuel Kirwa led Chattanooga in the men's Mile with a time of 4:25.42, good for sixth place. Junior Joshue Vasquez was eighth in the event with a time of 4:28.47 followed by sophomore Mark Cole with a time of 4:28.58, a PR.

Freshmen Samantha Pulido and Taylor Pannell ran the 55 meter hurdles. Pulido was fifth with a time of 9.43 seconds while Pannell was sixth with a time of 9.64 seconds. Sophomore Sarah Washington was seventh in the women's 400 meter dash with a time of 1:04.37. In the women's 800 meter run freshman Jessica Philpott was seventh with a time of 2:28.11 and classmate Ambria Reese was eighth in the event at a 2:29.52 pace.

Freshman Dezerick Frazier was fifth in the men's 400 meter dash with a time of 50.50 seconds and junior Blake Olson was eighth in the men's 55 meter hurdles with a PR of 8.64 seconds.
The Running Mocs will gear up for the 2012 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., on Feb. 23-24 at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Western Carolina posted 19 top-five finishes at JDL Fast Track Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--Western Carolina's track & field teams posted 19 top five finishes including top collegiate finishes in the women's 60m hurdles, the men's and women's 400m, the women's 3000m run, the men's and women's 4x400m relays, the men's high jump, men's pole vault and men's triple jump events at the JDL College Invitational Meet at the brand new facility in Winston-Salem, N.C.

The men's and women's 4x400m teams continued their streak of excellent finishes for the 2011-12 indoor season. For the third time this season  the women's "A" team has placed in the top three, picking up its second victory of the season with a time of 3:51.55. The women's team consisted of Brittany Diggs, Shiniqua Pryor, Genevieve Emrick and Felisha Garren. The men's "A" team of Aaron Tribble, Brandon Hairston, Demari Boswell and Benny Davis picked up its fourth victory of the season with a time of 3:18.82. Neither men's nor women's team has finished the relay outside of the top five in any meet this season. The WCU "B" teams both placed third with the women crossing the stripe in 3:59.04 and the men in 3:24.80.

The men's team was very successful in the field Saturday afternoon. Catamounts Jordan Orr and Bob McNeil picked up wins in the high jump and the triple jump with Orr clearing the bar in 2.05m while McNeil jumped a long of 14.55m. McNeil also earned a third place finish in the long jump with a best jump of 6.87m.

In the pole vault, Keith Leonard was the top collegiate finisher, earning second place by successfully clearing 4.55m. The vault was a personal best for the sophomore. On the women's side, Ashley Wala placed fourth (3.35m) while teammates Kayla Heineike and Summer Hughes tied for sixth with a clearance of 3.05m.

In the throws, senior Jamie Van Pelt earned second place in the weight throw with a long of 17.07m, just shy of the personal best he earned last week of 17.21m. For the women, freshman Alisha Bradshaw continues to rack up top ten finishes, earning fifth in the shot put with a throw of 13.14m and third in the weight throw (14.94m). It is the ninth and tenth time that Bradshaw placed in the top ten this indoor season. Classmate Aleisha Archie-McMillan placed ninth in the weight throw with a best of 13.19m.

Back on the track, freshman Xaviera Bass was the top collegiate finisher in the 60m hurdles, finishing fourth with a time of 8.90. Jocelyn Keen earned a second place finish in the 800m, crossing in 2:14.09. Teammate Lena Elliott finished just behind Keen in 2:18.08, placing ninth.
Mara Smith led all collegiate runners in the 3000m run, knocking 23 seconds off of her previous best time to run a new personal best 10:12.63, placing second.

In an event that the Catamounts traditionally do well at, the top collegiate runners in the 400m both came from Western Carolina. Felisha Garren placed second overall with a time of 55.90. Teammates Shiniqua Pryor (58.43) placed fifth while Brittany Diggs (58.93) finished seventh. On the men's side, Benny Davis also finished second overall with a time of 48.88 while Brandon Hairston crossed the stripe in 48.97, finishing third.

A few Catamounts will head to Boone this Friday for the ASU Valentine Invitational while the majority of the Western Carolina track & field now has two weeks to prepare for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships to be held at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. A season ago the Catamounts placed second overall in the conference meet.

Wofford breaks three school records at JDL Fast Track Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Led by six personal records and three school records in the 60m hurdles by Keenan Langley, in the 400m by Alyssa Burkert and by the women’s distance medley team of Emily Gothberg, Katie Kessler, Nicole Klasnic and Burkert the men’s and women’s track and field team completed the JDL Fast Track Meet Saturday.
 
Burkert finished with a time of 1:01.50 in the 400m dash for the second time in as many weeks taking down the Wofford school record. She finished 14th in the meet.
 
Langley also for the second straight week snapped a Wofford record with a time of 9.71 seconds in the 60m hurdles and finished in 25th place.
 
The DMR team had the best finished in an event Saturday taking first place with a time of 13:59.83 en route to their school record.
 
On the women’s side, Wofford also had nine top 20 finishes with Kaitlin Brown’s seventh place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.55m leading the way.  In the mile run, Wofford place three runners in the top 20 – Klasnic with a time of 5:24.55 for 14th and a personal record, Andrea Kelsey with a time of 5:38.98 for 19th and Sam Hughes with a time of 5:39.71 in 20th.  In the 800m, Alissa Williams took 18th with a time of 2:23.20, and Kessler finished in 19th with a time of 2:23.81.
 
On the men’s side, four personal best and three top 20 finishes highlight the meet.  Joe Bailey led the way with a height of 1.85m in the high jump for sixth place, while two relay teams took 16th with a time of 3:36.37 and 20th with a time of 3:58.27 in the 4x400m relay.  Bryan Youman set a new personal record with a time of 7.22 in the 60m and in the 200m with a time of 25.30.  Travis Butler also had a personal record in the 800m with a time of 4:49.48.
 
Wofford will return to the track on February 17 in Boone, N.C. at Appalachian State for its next meet.
