Sunday SoCon Wrestling Recaps

SIUE 31, Tiffin 9
Northern Illinois 34, SIUE 8

DEKALB, Ill. - Brendan Murphy, Cole Rogers, and Gabe Hocum each won twice as SIUE wrestling split its two matches Sunday.

SIUE defeated Tiffin 31-9 and lost to host Northern Illinois 34-8.

"The NIUI match was exciting," said SIUE Head Coach David Ray. "It was physical from the start."

Murphy, a 133-pounder, kicked off the Tiffin match with a 1 minute, 7 second, pin over Stephen Pastor. Murphy later would blank Northern Illinois' Rob Jilliard 3-0.

Hocum picked up a forfeit against Tiffin and then earned a decision over NIU's Dan Burk 7-4 at 165 pounds.

Rogers was the only Cougar to win at two different weight classes. He earned an 11-1 major decision at heavyweight over Tiffin's Derek Eschelman. Rogers would go on to edge Northern Illinois' Mike Lukowski 8-5 at 197 pounds.

"Cole had a great day today. He wrestled hard in two seven-minute matches. He wrestled tough," said Ray.

Patrick Myers, Kyle Lowman, and Steve Ross also won their matches against Tiffin. Myers was a 5-3 overtime winner over Ryan McKenzie at 141 pounds. Lowman topped Trevor Nickolai 11-4 at 157 pounds. Ross edged Chris Baker 4-1 at 165 pounds.

SIUE's regular season comes to a close next Sunday when the Cougars take on Buffalo in a 1 p.m. match at the Vadalabene Center.

No. 10 Wyoming 38, Chattanooga 6
Boise State 25, Chattanooga 17

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped a pair of matches in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Cliff Keen National Duals Presented by Hibiclens and The Marines in Stillwater, Okla., today. The Mocs fell to No. 10 Wyoming (38-6) and Boise State (25-17) to drop to 11-6 overall.

Chattanooga, the fifth seed in the six-team regional, only got one win in the opening dual with the No. 4 seeded Cowboys. Freshman Kevin Malone (Carrollton, Ohio) pinned L.J. Helbig (6:33) at heavyweight to keep UTC from being shutout for the first time this season.

The Mocs did have a pair of one-point losses. Senior Manny Ramirez (Fayetteville, N.C.) lost in overtime (5-4) to No. 18 Michael Martinez at 125. It was Ramirez's first loss in three matches as a Moc. Senior Kelly Felix (Franklin, Tenn.) lost a 3-2 decision to McCade Ford at 149.

The match with the Broncos was much closer as UTC built a 17-10 lead with four matches remaining. Ramirez started off with a 14-6 major decision over Landon Hartley at 125. Sophomore Shawn Greevy (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) also scored a major decision at 141. Felix won a decision and senior Brandon Wright (Germantown, Pa.) scored six points in a walkover.

Boise State took all of the last four matches, including a pin at 197, to take the team win. "We were very flat today," stated head coach Heath Eslinger. "We lost some that we did not expect and had a hard time getting any momentum going."

Freshman Nick Soto (Spring Hill, Fla.), suffered two pins on the day to drop to 21-6 overall. Four of his six losses this season have been by a fall. Senior Dan Waddell (Chattanooga, Tenn.), junior Robert Prigmore (Southlake, Texas), sophomore Levi Clemons (Kissimmee, Fla.) and Cory Canada (Ringgold, Ga.) all struggled with two losses today.

The Mocs next match is Monday, Feb. 20, at VMI. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. (E.S.T.) in Lexington, Va.

Indiana 39, VMI 6
North Carolina State 36, VMI 12

RALEIGH, N.C. - Zeb Stewart logged a pair of wins on Sunday at a quad match, hosted by North Carolina State, but the Keydets fell in their two dual matches, dropping a 39-6 decision against Indiana University and falling 36-12 to the host.

Additionally, Gardner-Webb University was at the quad match, which was contested at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh, but VMI did not wrestle Gardner-Webb, as the two Southern Conference foes met earlier this season in Lexington.

Stewart logged his first win of the afternoon against the Hoosiers, posting a narrow 2-1 decision over Matt Ortega at 141 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Ortega opted to start the second period down and earned an escape for the period's only point. Likewise, Stewart began the third period on bottom and also earned an escape. Stewart logged enough time to pick up a riding time point and earned the victory.

Following Stewart's win, teammate David Yost posted the only other Keydet victory, besting Indiana's Ryan Nieman 4-3. With the match knotted at 3-3 at the end of the second, Yost began the period on bottom and broke free to earn a point and secure the victory.

In the second bout with NC State, Stewart picked up an easy six points after the Wolfpack forfeited 141 pounds.

In the heavyweight division against NC State, sophomore Andrew Embree posted his third first-period pin of the season. The win by fall was the fastest by Embree this season as he put Josh Davis on his back in just 52 seconds.

Despite the lopsided score versus Indiana, several of the matches were close, with four being decided by two points or less.

VMI (5-10, 2-3 SoCon) is idle until Feb. 20 when the Keydets return to The Thunderdome one last time in 2012 as Chattanooga comes to Lexington for a Southern Conference dual. Action is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. and will serve as the team's senior night.

Indiana 36, Gardner-Webb 6

Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb redshirt-senior Michael Slaughter and redshirt-junior Alex Medved each earned a decision in their respective weight classes on Sunday night, yet the Hoosiers of Indiana would take wins in the other eight matches to defeat the Runnin' Bulldogs 36-6 in Paul Porter Arena.

Slaughter led off the match for the Runnin' Bulldogs with an 8-3 win over Zach Zimmer, as the redshirt-senior led the bout from start to finish at 125 pounds, recording his 13th overall win on the year.

GWU quickly lost their 3-0 match lead, as Indiana posted a major decision win at 133 pounds and a pin at 141 pounds to take a 10-3 lead after the first three bouts.

At 149 pounds, GWU's Davante Andujar and Indiana's Geno Capezio battled to a 4-4 tie after three periods with each wrestler scoring points in the final 30 seconds of the final period. In the overtime period, Capezio recorded a two-point takedown to edge Andujar for the 6-4 overtime decision and put the Hoosiers up by 10 at 13-3.

Alex Medved jumped out to an early lead at 157 pounds and took advantage of the riding time to hold on for the 7-2 decision over Sawyer Morris, giving him seven straight wins in a row.

Much like at 149 pounds, at 165 pounds GWU's Justin Guthrie used a two-point takedown with less than 45 seconds to go in the third period to knot the score up at 8-8 and force the match into overtime. However, in overtime Indiana's Preston Keiffer scored a two-point takedown with 28 seconds left on the clock to defeat Guthrie 10-8 and put the Hoosiers back on top by 10 at 16-6.

Gardner-Webb fell in each of the last four bouts, as the Hoosiers earned a 36-6 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs.

The loss is the Runnin' Bulldogs third straight, as GWU falls to 5-11 overall in dual match action on the season.

Gardner-Webb (5-11, 1-5 SoCon) will return to the mat this Thursday night, February 16th, as the Runnin' Bulldog grapplers will travel to Davidson, N.C. to take on the Davidson College Wildcats at 7 p.m.
